They have caused major damage to naval forces, slowed or stopped naval actions and commercial shipping, and forced the alteration of strategic and tactical plans. The threat posed by sea mines continues, and is increasing, in today's world of inexpensive advanced electronics, nanotechnology, and multiple potential enemies, some of which are difficult to identify. This report assesses the Department of the Navy's capabilities for conducting naval mining and countermining sea operations.
Download or read book Amtracs written by Steven J. Zaloga and published by Osprey Publishing. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first prototype for the LVT (Landing Vehicle Tracked) was completed in July 1941, its design based on the Alligator, a tracked amphibious vehicle developed for rescue operations in the swamps of Florida. Though the early conception of amtrac operations envisioned using LVTs solely as supply vehicles, at Tarawa amtracs demonstrated their utility as assault vehicles to carry troops, leading to the development of new models. This book covers the evolution of amtracs, from the first LVT-1 to the LVT-7; their numerous variants; and their use throughout World War II and beyond.

Book Synopsis Tank Employment in Expeditionary Operations by :
Download or read book Tank Employment in Expeditionary Operations written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current use of primarily light forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and the increased emphasis on expeditionary operations within the Marine Corps has inclined some to say that the tank's days as part of the Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF) are numbered. The belief that light armor such as the amphibious assault vehicle (AAV), light armored vehicle (LAV), or a vehicle such as the U.S. Army's Stryker offers a similar capability to heavy armor is untrue. Although light armor is an indispensable component in combined arms operations, it is incapable of providing the same capabilities as the tank and its heavy armor. The tank's unique capabilities in the areas of mobility, firepower, and survivability demonstrate that it must continue to be integrated into all Marine Corps expeditionary operations.
