Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook contains standard methods of prescribed fire research assessments for logging slash fuels in British Columbia, and describes the procedures required for making pre-burn assessments, observations during the fire, and post-burn assessments. All procedures included are oriented toward documenting and evaluating broadcast prescribed fire. The handbook is designed solely for voluntary assessments, and is intended to document the prescribed fire treatment and to assess the success or failure of specific fire prescriptions. Specific topics covered include plot layout, environmental information collection, fuel sampling, estimation of mineral soil exposure, photography, and fuel calculations.

Book Synopsis Regenerating British Columbia's Forests by : R. Parish
Download or read book Regenerating British Columbia's Forests written by R. Parish and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regenerating British Columbia's Forests will assist those responsible for planning reforestation projects to reach informed decisions and will challenge them to consider primarily the biological factors basic to reforestation success rather than short-term costs and production technology. Although its main audience is practising foresters and forestry students of British Columbia, the text will be of considerable interest to foresters in other parts of Canada, the United States, and Europe who manage reforestation.
Book Synopsis Silviculture Prescription Data Collection Field Handbook by : Michael Patrick Curran
Download or read book Silviculture Prescription Data Collection Field Handbook written by Michael Patrick Curran and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is a technical support document intended to help forestry practitioners collect the information they need to prepare a silvicultural treatment regime and silviculture prescription in accordance with British Columbia Forest Practices Code legislation. It deals primarily with the collection & stratification of site-specific field data. After information on office preparation, stratification, plot establishment, and mapping procedures, the guide presents data collection procedures for silviculture prescription field forms. Copies of forms are included in the appendix. The data cover such matters as site characteristics, understorey & overstorey, soils, riparian & watershed values, soil & fire hazards, silvicultural systems & objectives, harvesting, forest health, stand tending, and forest resource values.
Book Synopsis A Silvicultural Assessment of 10 Lodgepole Pine Stands After Partial Cutting to Reduce Susceptibility to Mountain Pine Beetle by : Roger J. Whitehead
Download or read book A Silvicultural Assessment of 10 Lodgepole Pine Stands After Partial Cutting to Reduce Susceptibility to Mountain Pine Beetle written by Roger J. Whitehead and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 15 years, selective cutting prescriptions have been applied by forest operations in southeastern British Columbia as part of a strategy to reduce landscape-level susceptibility to damage from mountain pine beetle outbreaks. The prescriptions have been applied in stands where maintenance of some mature forest cover is needed to meet management objectives for viewscapes, recreation and habitat or to hold some pine volume during periods of rising beetle activity until it is required or available for harvest. In this study, we examined 10 of these sites 5 to 14 years after harvest, and determined current stand composition and structure from direct sampling and pre- and post-treatment stand characteristics from stand reconstruction. We then related these characteristics to original treatment specifications; the volume removed during harvest and remaining on site after treatment; subsequent losses to wind, snow or bark beetle damage; current stocking status; radial growth rates of residual overstorey trees; and the nature of fuel complexes created and effects of treatment on potential fire behaviour.

Book Synopsis Post-fire Vegetation Development and Fire Effects in the SBS Zone by : Evelyn Hope Hamilton
Download or read book Post-fire Vegetation Development and Fire Effects in the SBS Zone written by Evelyn Hope Hamilton and published by British Columbia Ministry of Forests and Range Forest Scienc. This book was released on 2007 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The effects of clearcutting and slashburning on vegetation and soil composition and structure were monitored at permanent plots in the Prince George Forest District for up to 10 years post-burn. Changes in floristic composition, percent cover, and height were documented and described for each study area. At each site, standard fire weather stations were used to determine fire weather codes and indices and predict forest floor moisture content. Woody fuel loading and consumption and burn severity were determined using a line-intercept approach in standard fire effects assessment triangles and circular plots. Forest floor consumption, mineral soil exposure, and woody fuel consumption were compared to values predicted by the Prescribed Fire Predictor."--Document.
