Book Synopsis Tree Crop Ecosystems by : F. T. Last
Download or read book Tree Crop Ecosystems written by F. T. Last and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 2001 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. Tree Crop Ecosystems is a unique new resource which combines the interests of traditional foresters and horticulturalists. Sixteen chapters written by international experts in the field emphasise the current topical issues besetting each of the crops considered. In the past the management of tree crops was focussed on yield without an adequate understanding of crop behaviour. Recent decades have seen many major advances in knowledge, notably those related tree biology and biodiversity within species and between different crops. Throughout the volume the issue of biodiversity is discussed as a key factor in relation to: the conservation of natural resources at risk; within species variation; and the flora and fauna associated with tree crops. Tree Crop Ecosystems is unique in taking an holistic approach to the crops, their origins and within-species variation. Direct and indirect influences of the crops on their ecosystem a

Book excerpt: Plant Analysis: An Interpretation Manual 2nd Edition is an easily accessible compilation of data summarising the range of nutrient concentration limits for crops, pastures, vegetables, fruit trees, vines, ornamentals and forest species. This information is valuable in assessing the effectiveness of fertiliser programs and for monitoring longer term changes in crop nutritional status. New to this edition: *Volume and scope of information accessed from the literature has expanded several-fold. Interpretation criteria for 294 species have been compiled in the tables from more than 1872 published papers. *New chapter on nutrient criteria for forest species. *Includes guidelines for collecting, handling and analysing plant material. An entire chapter is devoted to the identification of nutrient deficiency and toxicity symptoms.
Book Synopsis Boron in Soils and Plants by : R.W. Bell
Download or read book Boron in Soils and Plants written by R.W. Bell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic significance of boron (B) in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry has been beyond dispute for several decades. Even in the last two decades, the areas where B deficiency limits plant production has grown with increased reports from China, south Asia and southeast Asia. The present volume is reflective of the growing awareness of the significance of low soil B with reports from Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, north, central and southern China, India, Nepal, and the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan contained herein. Boron deficiency also continues to be a problem for crop yield and quality in areas where B deficiency has been known for some time, for example in Germany and the USA. The problem of low soil B is not limited to effects on field crop yield, with papers reporting on depressed wood yield and quality in timber trees (Lambert et al. ), and depressed fruit quality (Dong et al. ; Smith et al. : Zude et al. ) also appearing in the present volume. Globally, Shorrocks (1997)1 estimates that ?? tonnes of B fertiliser is applied annually in agriculture. The economic benefits from the use of B fertiliser have not been quantified but are clearly enormous. Paradoxically, the clear economic imperatives for using B fertiliser on low B soils are not matched by a similar clarity of understanding of the role and functions of B in plants.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Management of Pinus Radiata Plantations by : Donald J. Mead
Download or read book Sustainable Management of Pinus Radiata Plantations written by Donald J. Mead and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pinus radiata (radiata pine) is a versatile, fast-growing, medium-density softwood, suitable for a wide range of end-uses. Its silviculture is highly developed, and is built on a rm foundation of over a century of research, observation and practice. Radiata pine is often considered a model for growers of other plantation species. This book explores current knowledge of, and experience with radiata pine forest plantation management and examines its long-term sustainability. Radiata pine management needs to integrate the biological aspects of tree-growing, with socio-economics, management objectives, practical considerations and other constraints and opportunities. Although stands of radiata pine may appear to be simple, they are actually quite complex ecosystems because they contain large, long-lived trees that change dramatically over time and interact in changing ways with the environment and with other organisms. The focus of this book is on the principles and practices of growing radiata pine sustainably. It also looks ahead to emerging challenges facing radiata pine plantation management, such as the effects of climate change, new diseases and other threats, and meeting changing product needs and societal demands."--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: This collection represents a unique set of essays on the role of theory in shaping the practice of medicine across disciplinary boundaries. In the context of this volume, "theoryā€¯ relates to the conceptual models, frameworks, knowledge representations, metaphors and analogies that inform the problem-solving efforts of practitioners seeking to develop novel dialogues both within and across disciplinary boundaries. Contributors to this volume include computational scientists, chemists, medical researchers, biologists and philosophers, all drawing on personal experience in their respective fields to produce a genuinely interdisciplinary range of perspectives on the common theme of theory in medical thinking and multidisciplinary research practice. * Selected and edited papers from the 10th North American Forest Soils Conference held in Saulte Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, July 20-24, 2003 * A unique spin-off from Elsevier's highly regarded journal, Forest Ecology and Management * An estimated 400 pages of the latest findings in forest soil ecology from the most prominent researchers in the field

This book was released on 2010 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in 1992, the British Columbia Ministry of Forests established a small network of lodgepole pine and interior spruce nutrient optimization research installations on representative sites within three major biogeoclimatic (BEC) zones in the British Columbia Interior. The objectives of the long-term "maximum productivity" study are to (1) compare the effects of different regimes and frequencies of repeated fertilization on the foliar nutrition, growth, and development of young interior forests, and (2) determine the effects of large nutrient additions on above- and below-ground timber and non-timber resources. This report examines the effects of repeated fertilization on foliar nutrition and tree- and stand-level growth and development over 12 years at the five lodgepole pine study sites.--Document.
