Book excerpt: Field experiments were conducted over three years (2014-2016) to determine if cultivars with higher disease resistance ratings required the same amount of fungicide as cultivars with lower ratings to control disease and produce high yielding crops. Three cultivars were selected to represent high, moderate and low levels of resistance to Rhynchosporium commune and Ramularia collo-cygni based on the range currently available commercially. The fungicide treatments were i) prothioconazole ii) prothioconazole plus bixafen, applied at rates of 0.25 to 2.0 times the recommended at the start of stem extension and during booting and iii) chlorothalonil applied at the recommended rate at early tillering, start of stem extension and end of booting. Untreated plots served as controls. The levels of disease control and yield responses to treatment were similar regardless of the resistance rating of the cultivar. Across high and low disease pressure seasons rates of under 0.5 of the manufacturers recommendation gave adequate disease control and an average yield response of approximately 0.5t/ha across cultivars and years. The results indicate that the range of resistance is too narrow to tailor fungicide applications to the resistance of the cultivar. In a second set of experiments, a range of fungicide active ingredients were investigated at two different application rates to determine their effects on yield formation under conditions of low disease pressure. Under relatively similar, but low levels of disease, there was a significant (0.7t/ha) yield response to fungicide in 2015, but not 2016. The yield response was comparable with each treatment and there was no significant effect of any fungicide on grain numbers contrary to previous reports. The results show that the yield response to fungicide does not relate closely to the efficacy of disease control and cannot be predicted just from an assessment of the amount visible disease present.
