Book Synopsis Fly Ash Soil Stabilization for Non-uniform Subgrade Soils by : David J. White (Ph. D.)
Download or read book Fly Ash Soil Stabilization for Non-uniform Subgrade Soils written by David J. White (Ph. D.) and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To provide insight into subgrade non-uniformity and its effects on pavement performance, this study investigated the influence of non-uniform subgrade support on pavement responses (stress and deflection) that affect pavement performance. Several reconstructed PCC pavement projects in Iowa were studied to document and evaluate the influence of subgrade/subbase non-uniformity on pavement performance. In situ field tests were performed at 12 sites to determine the subgrade/subbase engineering properties and develop a database of engineering parameter values for statistical and numerical analysis. Results of stiffness, moisture and density, strength, and soil classification were used to determine the spatial variability of a given property. Natural subgrade soils, fly ash-stabilized subgrade, reclaimed hydrated fly ash subbase, and granular subbase were studied. The influence of the spatial variability of subgrade/subbase on pavement performance was then evaluated by modeling the elastic properties of the pavement and subgrade using the ISLAB2000 finite element analysis program. A major conclusion from this study is that non-uniform subgrade/subbase stiffness increases localized deflections and causes principal stress concentrations in the pavement, which can lead to fatigue cracking and other types of pavement distresses. Field data show that hydrated fly ash, self-cementing fly ash-stabilized subgrade, and granular subbases exhibit lower variability than natural subgrade soils. Pavement life should be increased through the use of more uniform subgrade support. Subgrade/subbase construction in the future should consider uniformity as a key to long-term pavement performance.

Download or read book Handbook of Fly Ash written by Kamal K. Kar and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2021-11-07 with total page 869 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The drive to develop more sustainable materials has made fly ash a valuable raw material in many different applications. Comprehensive and authoritative, Handbook of Fly Ash highlights the latest research efforts to develop the properties of fly ash to maximum utility while safeguarding the environment. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach to the research into the classification and compositions of various types of fly ash, such as bottom ash and boiler slag, special classes of fly ash, and their sources around the globe. This is followed by a discussion of fly ash-reinforced composites, such as elastomer-based composites and metal matrix composites. This book also covers a wide range of applications of fly ash in cement, concrete, bricks and blocks, road construction, wastewater treatment, and scrubber sludge solidification. Highlights the recent developments in the utilization of fly ash including its preparation, functionalization, properties, and handling. Places a focus on a wide variety of fly ash applications including recent innovations, such as alkali-activated binder, polypropylene composite, and geopolymer concrete. Includes comprehensive coverage of the characteristics of fly ash with a particular focus on health hazards if it is not properly disposed. Discusses fly ash-reinforced composites, such as polymer/elastomer-based composites and metal matrix composites.

Book Synopsis Soft Soil Engineering by : Dave H. Chan
Download or read book Soft Soil Engineering written by Dave H. Chan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft soils present particular challenges to engineers and an understanding of the specific characteristics of these soils is indispensable. Laboratory techniques such as numerical modelling, theoretical analysis and constitutive modelling give new insights into soft soil material behaviour, while large-scale testing in the field provides important information in areas such as slope stability and soft soil improvements. This collection of papers from the Fourth International Conference on Soft Soil Engineering, Vancouver, 2006, presents an international appraisal of current research and new advances in engineering practices, illustrating the theory with relevant case studies. Geotechnical professionals, engineers, academics and researchers working in the areas of soft ground engineering and soft soil engineering will find this a valuable book.
