Accurate measurement of the ion's electronic state in these ion traps is required by both atomic clocks and quantum computation. Quantum computation with trapped ions can only scale to larger numbers of qubits if the ion traps and their laser delivery and measurement infrastructure can be scaled to smaller sizes. Fiber optics are a promising method of measurement because they collect a large fraction of light scattered by the trapped ions, and many optical fibers can be placed in a small area, allowing more ions to be measured in a small region. The question I address in this thesis is, "How can optical fibers be integrated onto planar ion traps?" This thesis presents a process I designed and implemented for integrating optical fibers onto planar ion traps as well as a system for integrating optical fibers into a cryogenic system. While the fiber integration was successful, we were unable to trap any ions in our fiber-integrated ion trap. We were able to show that the integrated fiber could collect light scattered from the surface of ion trap, and hypothesize that the large amount of dielectric present on the surface of the trap may have distorted the trapping potential and prevented us from trapping any ions. We also determined that scatter spots on the surface of the trap are a much bigger problem for fiber optic light collection systems than for traditional bulk optics systems. Finally, we propose a method of integration that could reduce the amount of exposed dielectric in the vicinity of the trap, as well as solve the problem of sensitivity to scatter spots.

Book excerpt: The trapped-ion quantum computer is an atom-based implementation of a quantum computer that has successfully demonstrated numerous quantum algorithms and the potential for scalability. Fundamental to its operation is the short-range Coulombic interaction among its atomic ion registers, which has led to the development of local, single-chip devices. In this work, we demonstrate the integration of an optical-fiber with a planar ion trap, and show the physical interaction between fiber light and the trapped-ion qubit. As the single-mode fiber is well-suited to the transport of single photons, the fiber interface (when augmented by an optical cavity) represents a means to link distantly located quantum computers through a common optical network. Hence, this work represents a step towards the paradigm of distributed quantum computing: self-contained, technically-simple processors may be optically linked together to perform large-scale quantum computation. This thesis is divided into two parts. In the first, we provide a thorough review of ion trap design and a detailed numerical analysis of trapped-ion motion. This theoretical discussion culminates with the development of an electronic technique that permits the arbitrary, in situ positioning of a trapped atom in the ion trap. The positioning ability is an enabling technology for trap-integration as it allows for complete freedom in the alignment of the trapped atom with respect to the integrated element. In the second part, the construction of the experimental setup and the integrated "fibertrap" is described. In our experiment, a single 38Sr+ is trapped 670 [mu]m above the end of an optical fiber in a cryogenic (8 K) surface-electrode ion trap. The fiber serves as an integrated source of laser light, which drives the quadrupole qubit transition of 88Sr+. Using in situ translation of the ion, the Gaussian beam profile of the fiber output is imaged, and the fiberion displacement, in units of the mode waist at the ion, is optimized to within 0.13 ± 0.10 of the mode center despite an initial offset of 3.30 ± 0.10 arising from fabrication. We also quantify the perturbative effects of the fiber dielectric on ion trap operation. Light-induced charging by 125 [mu]W of 674 nm fiber light is measured as an induced electric field of ~ 10 V/m at the ion, with charging and discharging time constants of 1.6 ± 0.3 s and 4.7 t 0.6 s. These measurements are of general importance to trapped-ion quantum computing, where the scalability of the platform depends crucially on the feasibility of on-chip optics integration.

Book excerpt: Optical confinement and manipulation of matter, or optical trapping, is widely adopted at micro-scales as a research tool in disciplines of biology, engineering, and physics. Microfluidic systems arc attractive from the standpoint of low sample volumes, laminar flow, and viscous damping and offer an ideal environment for trapping of miniaturized objects and microorganisms. Various trapping configurations are presented in this thesis using a custom fabricated consumer-grade optofluidic chip and are of significant scientific and practical importance. Microfluidics and fiber optics are integrated in-plane to achieve several flow-dependent particle trapping mechanisms on-chip. Each mechanism results from a combination of fluid drag and optical scattering forces. Parallel and offset fibers, orthogonally oriented to the flow, show cyclic cross-stream particle transit with flow-dependent particle trajectories and loss. Upstream-angled fibers with flow result in circulatory particle trajectories. Asymmetric angled fibers result in continuous particle circulation whereas symmetry with respect to the flow axis enables both stable trapping and circulation modes. Stable trapping of single particles, self-guided multi-particle arrays and stacked particle assemblies are demonstrated with a single upstream-oriented fiber. Size tuning of trapped multiple particle assemblies is also presented. The planar interaction of fluid drag and optical forces results in novel possibilities for cost-effective on-chip diagnostics, mixing, flow rate monitoring, and cell analysis. An opto-hydrodynamic theory is adopted to verify experimentally observed particle array dynamics in a dual-beam fiber-optic trap. When applied to dielectric microsphere particles, the theory confirms the inhomogeneous self-organization and the spontaneous emergence of self-sustained oscillations in particle arrays. In the presence of small-scale symmetry-breaking, self-sustained oscillations are shown to occur spontaneously from an exchange between the optical scattering and the gradient optical forces, in the absence of inertia that is central to the dynamics of ion traps. Experimental results show non-uniform equilibrium particle spacing and spontaneous self-sustained oscillation for large particle numbers. Self-organization and oscillation is of general interest to other systems involving multi-particle optical interactions.
