Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feudal Cambridgeshire This Calendar of Feudal Records relating to Cambridgeshire has been compiled for students as a source of reference to the baronial, honorial and manorial history of the county. Somewhat similar calendars are in course of preparation for one or two other counties, notably for Lincolnshire. If ever a full series of such calendars should be compiled for the bulk of the English counties students of local history would be enabled to trace and identify all the scattered members of any barony or honor, wherever situated. Materials would then be available for a much more precise descent of the ancient nobility and knightly families than is at present possible. Our knowledge also of the royal serjeanties would be much more complete. The sources employed in the compilation of this calendar may be briefly described: For the eleventh century: 'The Domesday Survey' (Record Commission); 'Inquisitio Eliensis' and 'Inquisitio Comitatus Cantabrigiae' (ed. Hamilton). For the twelfth century: 'Magnus Rotulus Pipae' of the 31st year of King Henry I (Record Com.); 'Rotulus Magnus Pipae' of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of King Henry II (Record Com.); 'Liber Rubeus Scaccarii' (ed. Hubert Hall for the Rolls Series); 'The Pipe Rolls, ' 'Rotuli Curiae Regis, ' 'Feet of Fines' and 'Rotulus de Dominabus' (ed. J. H. Round), published for the Pipe Roll Society; 'Rotuli Curiae Regis' (Record Com.). For the thirteenth century many of the publications of the Record Commission, the Rolls Series and the Public Record Office Calendars; 'Liber Memorandorum Ecclesiae de Bernewelle' (ed. J. Willis Clark); 'A Calendar of Cambridgeshire Fines' (ed. Walter Rye for the Cambridge Antiquarian Society); 'Monasticon Anglicanum' (last edition) and several Monastic Chartularies. Book Synopsis Essays on the Nobility of Medieval Scotland by : Keith Stringer
Download or read book Essays on the Nobility of Medieval Scotland written by Keith Stringer and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2004-07-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book, all by distinguished historians, illuminate the main activities, preoccupations and aspirations of the families whose territorial power and local leadership made them a central factor in medieval Scottish society. Issues discussed include the influence of Anglo-Norman England on earlier medieval Scotland, patterns of land accumulation by the aristocracy, noble residences, the legal and administrative aspects of baronial lordship, clientage, and dealings between magnates and the Church. Throughout, the essays stress the importance of recognising that, before the Wars of Independence, the nobility of Scotland was closely bound by ties of kinship and property with the nobility in England and emphasise that the common assumption of perpetual opposition between baronage and the Crown is a myth. First published in 1985, these essays remain essential reading on the subject.

Conceived during the Second World War with a view to ensuring the most important historical documents remained available and accessible in perpetuity, the first volume came out in 1953, and the most recent volume almost sixty years later. The print series, edited by David C. Douglas, is a magisterial survey of British history, covering the years 500 to 1914 and including around 5,500 primary sources, all selected by leading historians Editors. It has over the years become an indispensable resource for generations of students, researchers and lecturers. EHD is now available in its entirety online. Bringing EHD into the digital age has been a long and complex process. To provide you with first-rate, intelligent searchability, Routledge have teamed up with the Institute of Historical Research (one of the research institutes that make up the School of Advanced Study, University of London http://www.history.ac.uk) to produce EHD Online. The IHR's team of experts have fully indexed the documents, using an exhaustive historical thesaurus developed by the Royal Historical Society for its Bibliography of British and Irish History. The sources include treaties, statutes, declarations, government and cabinet proceedings, military dispatches, orders, acts, sermons, newspaper articles, pamphlets, personal and official letters, diaries and more. Each section of documents and many of the documents themselves are accompanied by editorial commentary. The sources cover a wide spectrum of topics, from political and constitutional issues to social, economic, religious as well as cultural history."--[Résumé de l'éditeur].
Book Synopsis The Cartulary of Chatteris Abbey by : Chatteris Abbey
Download or read book The Cartulary of Chatteris Abbey written by Chatteris Abbey and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 15c cartulary of Benedictine nunnery illuminates relationship with Ely, estate management, and life of women religious. Takes its place as perhaps the finest available study of a house for women religious. ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW The fifteenth-century cartulary of the Benedictine nunnery of Chatteris Abbey in Cambridgeshire (founded in the early eleventh century) has important implications for the study of women religious, especially in the light of the small number of surviving cartularies from English nunneries, yet until now it has received little attention, perhaps due to its damage in the Cotton Library fire of 1731. This critical edition of the manuscript, which contains documents copied into it from the mid-twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, offers a full transcription, together with historical notes and apparatus. The introduction draws on the cartulary itself, as well as manorial and episcopal records, to analyse the nunnery's relationship with its patron, the bishop of Ely, and the development and management of its estates; it also examines the location and layout of the abbey, the social and geographical origins of the nuns, and the production and organisation of the cartulary. The edition is accompanied by an annotated listof all known abbesses, prioresses and nuns. CLAIRE BREAYgained her Ph.D. at the Institute for Historical Research at the University of London; she is currently a curator of medieval manuscripts at the British Library.

Based on the recently discovered historical documents on Cambridge’s sophisticated urban property market during the Commercial Revolution in the thirteenth century, this book explores how successful entrepreneurs employed the wealth they had accumulated to the benefit of the community. Cutting across disciplines, from economic and business history to entrepreneurship, philanthropy and medieval studies, this outstanding study presents an invaluable contribution to our knowledge of the early phases of capitalism. The Cambridge Hundred Rolls Sources Volume, a companion replacing the previous incomplete and inaccurate transcription by the Record Commission of 1818, is also now available from Bristol University Press.
