Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gallantry: Dizain des Fetes Galantes" is a captivating novel authored by James Branch Cabell. Set in the fictional French province of Poictesme, the book weaves a mesmerizing tapestry of romance, and chivalry and other one whimsical fantasy. The story follows the protagonist, Manuel, a simple innkeeper's son, as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and ambition. Determined to ascend the social ladder and win the heart of a noblewoman, the beguiling Countess Melicent, Manuel's adventures are laden with humor, satire, and allegorical undertones. Cabell's writing style is poetic and laced with wit, drawing inspiration from the 18th-century French rococo paintings known as "fêtes galantes." He skillfully blends elements of romance and fantasy, presenting a compelling portrayal of medieval courtly life while subtly critiquing societal conventions. "Gallantry" is not merely a tale of courtly love but also a commentary on the complexities of human desires, aspirations, and the illusions of nobility. Through Manuel's quest for gallantry, Cabell masterfully explores themes of ambition, identity, and the follies of romance. This literary gem continues to enchant readers with its graceful prose, intricate narrative, and timeless reflections on the human condition, making it a remarkable and enduring work in the realm of fantasy literature.

In 1904, she met Claude Debussy, played some of his piano pieces for him and sang several of his songs. Their discussions were the basis for her 1953 book, On the Interpretation of the Melodies of Claude Debussy which she resolved to write "after having heard Debussy's intentions betrayed so many times, and also to encourage singers ... to study some of the songs which are not known and are never sung, the excuse being that they are so difficult to interpret" (from Bathori's opening).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gallantry: Dizain Des Fetes Galantes These paragraphs, dignified by the revised edition of Gallantry and spuriously designated An Introduction, are nothing more than a series of notes and haphazard discoveries in preparation of a thesis. That thesis, if it is ever written, will bear a title something academically like The Psychogenesis of a Poet; or Cabell the Masquerader. For it is in this guise - sometimes selfdeclared, sometimes self-concealed, but always as the persistent visionary - that the author of some of the finest prose of our day has given us the key with which (to lapse into the jargon of verse) he has unlocked his heart. On the technical side alone, it is easy to establish Cabell's poetic standing. There are, first of all, the quantity of original rhymes that are scattered through the dozen volumes which Cabell has latterly (and significantly) classified as Biography. Besides these interjections which do duty as mottoes, chapter-headings, tail pieces, dedications, interludes and sometimes relevant songs, there is the volume of seventy-five "adaptations" in verse, From the Hidden Way, published in 1916. Here Cabell, even in his most natural role, declines to show his face and amuses himself with a new set of masks labelled Alessandro de Medici, Antoine Riczi, Nicolas de Caen, Theodore Passerat and other fabulous minnesingers whose verses were created only in the mind of Cabell. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for the general reader, this splendid introduction to French literature from 842 A.D.—the date of the earliest surviving document in any Romance language—to the present decade is the most compact and imaginative single-volume guide available in English to the French literary tradition. In fact, no comparable work exists in either language. It is not the customary inventory of authors and titles but rather a collection of wide-angled views of historical and cultural phenomena. It sets before us writers, public figures, criminals, saints, and monarchs, as well as religious, cultural, and social revolutions. It gives us books, paintings, public monuments, even TV shows. Written by 164 American and European specialists, the essays are introduced by date and arranged in chronological order, but here ends the book’s resemblance to the usual history of literature. Each date is followed by a headline evoking an event that indicates the chronological point of departure. Usually the event is literary—the publication of an original work, a journal, a translation, the first performance of a play, the death of an author—but some events are literary only in terms of their repercussions and resonances. Essays devoted to a genre exist alongside essays devoted to one book, institutions are presented side by side with literary movements, and large surveys appear next to detailed discussions of specific landmarks. No article is limited to the “life and works” of a single author. Proust, for example, appears through various lenses: fleetingly, in 1701, apropos of Antoine Galland’s translation of The Thousand and One Nights; in 1898, in connection with the Dreyfus Affair; in 1905, on the occasion of the law on the separation of church and state; in 1911, in relation to Gide and their different treatments of homosexuality; and at his death in 1922. Without attempting to cover every author, work, and cultural development since the Serments de Strasbourg in 842, this history succeeds in being both informative and critical about the more than 1,000 years it describes. The contributors offer us a chance to appreciate not only French culture but also the major critical positions in literary studies today. A New History of French Literature will be essential reading for all engaged in the study of French culture and for all who are interested in it. It is an authoritative, lively, and readable volume.
