Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fetal Physiology and Medicine: The Basis of Perinatology, Second, Revised Edition documents many of the major advances in fetal medicine, including developmental physiology, pathology, and therapy. This book covers the most important areas of maternofetal medicine and presents different views of the critical problems of development. The various components of fetal metabolism are highlighted to demonstrate how animal experimentation has given a clear view of the interrelationship of the mother, placenta, and fetus. This text is comprised of 24 chapters; the first of which describes the use of ultrasound in antenatal diagnosis of congenital structural anomalies. This topic is followed by a discussion on sexual differentiation, acquired immunity, and endocrine changes, as well as the physiology of breathing, the control of the fetal cardiovascular system, lung maturation, fetal infections, and the effects of hypoxia on the fetal brain. This book also provides comprehensive reviews of fetal regulatory mechanisms, such as the reninangiotensin system, water metabolism, and fetal and placental hormone production. Other chapters focus on clinical applications, such as antenatal fetal heart rate monitoring, the technical aspects of fetal and uterine pressure measurements, fetal acid-base balance, and the prevention of preterm delivery. A section that explores the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life concludes this book. This source is of great potential value to all students and practitioners of reproductive medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition offers an expanded and updated history of the field of fetal and neonatal development, allowing readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the biological aspects that contribute to the wellbeing or pathophysiology of newborns. In this concluding opus of a long and prominent career as a clinical scientist, Dr. Longo has invited new contributions from noted colleagues with expertise in various fields to provide a historical perspective on the impact of how modern concepts emerged in the field of fetal physiology and contributed to the current attention paid to the fetal origins of diseases in adults. In addition to new chapters on maternal physiology and complications during pregnancy, others trace the history of the Society for Reproductive Investigation, governmental funding of perinatal research, and major initiatives to support training in the new discipline of maternal fetal medicine, including the Reproductive Scientist Development program. The extensive survey provided by the author, who personally knew most of the pioneers in the field, offers a unique guide for all clinical and basic scientists interested in the history of – and future approaches to diagnosing and treating – pathologies that represent the leading causes of neonatal mortality and, far too often, life-long morbidity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fetal medicine has emerged as a separate subspecialty over the last 30 years as a result of major advances in a number of areas, in particular ultrasound imaging, cytogenetics, molecular biology and biochemistry. The widespread use of antenatal screening and diagnostic tests has led to an increased need for obstetricians to have knowledge and skills in fetal medicine. This book provides the information that underpins training programmes in fetal medicine and integrates science and clinical disciplines in a practical and useful way. Clinical sections include: the latest advances in prenatal screening; a systems-based presentation of the diagnosis and management of fetal malformations; complete coverage of common and rare fetal conditions including growth restriction, endocrine and platelet disorders, early pregnancy loss, and twins/multiple pregnancy. More focus on important basic-science concepts, such as maternofetal cell trafficking, and the relevance to clinical management.

Book excerpt: Forlagets beskrivelse: This two-volume book comprises an up-to-date reference text on fetal and neonatal physiology. It contains 190 chapters written by experts in each field which provide essential background information as well as contemporary viewpoints and research. The purpose of this second edition is to bring current information to readers and to enlarge the original scope with a more comprehensive approach. It is targeted to fellows, nurses, and other personnel training in fetal and neonatal medicine as well as to established investigators. Overall, the volumes accomplish their purpose. The topics are appropriately divided and indexed and nearly all of the chapters can be read at a single sitting. The illustrations are good, but their impact would have been improved by using more color. Chapters related to my specialty were well written and highly readable. These included placental development, developmental hematopoiesis, and developmental immunobiology. Disappointingly, immune relationships between the mother and baby during pregnancy, now a matter of considerable interest to fetal and neonatal physiologists, are not discussed. Nor were interactions between the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems highlighted. Although the book suffers from the previously mentioned problems and other minor deficiencies, it is nonetheless a notable achievement and is likely to be a standard volume on the shelves of novice and experienced physiologists.

Book excerpt: The Fetus and Neonate is a series of practical, focused texts which concentrate on that critical period of human development, from late fetal to neonatal life. Each volume in the series examines a particular body system, looking at the physiological mechanisms which underlie the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life, and the pathophysiological processes which may occur in this period. Each volume will consider the application of new basic scientific knowledge to the clinical situation. This series will be a valuable source of information to practitioners and postgraduate trainees in obstetrics, neonatology, paediatrics and reproductive medicine, as well as to basic scientists in these fields.
