Book excerpt: This book has been produced for use by agricultural consultants, farmers and their agents, and other organisations concerned with developing and maintaining a sustainable agricultural industry. It describes the principles of crop nutrition and gives recommendations for the use of lime, fertilisers and organic manures for field crops and grassland grown in England and Wales. The main purpose of the book is to provide recommendations for the optimum rate and timing of fertilisers but information is also given on a range of related topics such as soil sampling methods and fertiliser application. The primary aim of the recommendations is to maximise the economic returns for farmers. Adoption of the recommendations will also reduce the risk of applying more fertiliser nutrients than the crop needs and will thereby minimise the risk of causing nutrient pollution of the environment. The recommendations are not designed for use in organic farming systems. A summary of the main changes from the previous edition is given.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formerly entitled, the "Fertiliser Recommendations for Agricultural and Horticultural Crops", the 8th edition has now been renamed the "Fertiliser Manual" (ISBN 9780112432869). Farming is an important feature of our way of life. It shapes the landscape we enjoy, provides much of our food and is a vital part of maintaining and improving a healthy, thriving and diverse natural environment. The agricultural sector faces a number of challenges. Demand for crops will increase as the global population rises. However, agricultural practices including the use of fertilisers have the potential to damage the natural environment by polluting water courses, releasing greenhouse gases and ammonia to the air and by damaging the soil. This manual aims to help farmers and land managers better assess the fertiliser required for the range of crops they plan to grow, by suggesting what level of nutrients are required to provide the best financial return for the farm business. The manual aims to help ensure that proper account is taken of both mineral fertilisers and other sources of nutrients such as manures and slurries.

Book excerpt: This book consists of two parts –soil fertility and nutrient management as applied to agriculture and horticulture. The first part consists of the plant nutrients- principles of their role in nutrition of horticultural crops and behavior in soil with reference to their availability. Problems of soil solution-reaction and salt content- are discussed. All the soil properties excluding two products of weathering-soil texture and depth- are subject to manipulation. These can be scientifically managed for profitable crop production avoiding pollution. The second part elucidates their management with the principles developed in the previous part profitably to sustain agricultural and horticultural production without harming the environment. The principles spread over 20 chapters are clearly elucidated in lucid manner with pictures, figures and tables for easy and comprehensive understanding. Further readings are suggested at the end of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Soil Fertility Management in Agroecosystems, Editors Amitava Chatterjee and David Clay provide a thoughtful survey of important concepts in soil fertility management. For the requirements of our future workforce, it is imperative that we evolve our understanding of soil fertility. Agronomists and soil scientists are increasingly challenged by extreme climatic conditions. Farmers are experimenting with integrating cover crops into rotations and reducing the use of chemical fertilizers. In other words, there is no such a thing as a simple fertilizer recommendation in today's agriculture. Topics covered include crop-specific nutrient management, program assessment, crop models for decision making, optimization of fertilizer use, cover crops, reducing nitrous oxide emissions, natural abundance techniques, tile-drained conditions, and soil biological fertility.

And whether you apply fertilisers using a tractor or a drone... there is something for you. Fertiliser Essentials is the quintessential reference work for fertiliser use in Australia in the early 21st Century. Beautifully designed and extensively referenced, it is a must-read for anyone working or interested in modern agriculture. In full colour and 224 pages. Originally produced in the mid 1990s, Fertiliser Essentials is the fifth edition of this seminal publication. The fifth edition is divided into four sections: 1. Soils and fertilisers 2. Major elements 3. Micronutrients and natural fertilisers 4. Equipment, precision and calculations The aims of the book are: · to give land managers a basic knowledge of the principles of fertiliser use · to show how these principles can be used in growing crops and pastures. Book excerpt: If you?re an agronomist, horticulturalist, plant and soil scientist, breeder, or soil microbiologist, you?ll want to read Nutrient Use in Crop Production to find everything you need to know about judicious nutrient management and maximizing nutrient utilization in the agricultural landscape. In this book, you?ll discover ways to minimize undesirable nutrient losses and techniques for preserving the environment while meeting the challenges of providing the earth?s increasing population with sufficient food, feed, and fiber to sustain life. Your existing knowledge base concerning this vital area of science will expand and grow as you become more open to the new ideas and applications contained in Nutrient Use in Crop Production. Most importantly, you?ll avoid the narrow scope found in most crop nutrition books and take a broader, more globally minded view of how to maximize nutrient use and minimize nutrient losses in the soil of agricultural systems. Specifically, you?ll find these and other areas covered: population growth, food production, and nutrient requirements managing soil fertility decline the role of nitrogen fixation in crop production delivering fertilizers through seed coatings micronutrient fertilizers the role of nutrient-efficient crops in modern agriculture Feeding the world without depleting the world?s viable soil nutrients is a monumental task--but one that can be achieved, as evidenced in the pages of Nutrient Use in Crop Production. You and your circle of students, professionals, and administrators will benefit greatly from this in-depth view of nutrient use in both developed and non-industrialized counties to give you a better sense of how to allow both the world and the world?s crops to grow.

Book excerpt: This book is a review of the recent literature on the key scientific and technical subjects of fertilization management in vegetable crops. In the last decades, research on fertilization management in vegetables was aimed at producing economical yields with reduced fertilizer inputs by the development and implementation of cropping systems, nutrient management approaches and crop varieties. Examples of the interventions in cropping systems included adequate crop rotations, inter-cropping, double cropping, and other strategies for a better soil organic matter management; nutrient management approaches included modelling, Decision Support Systems, crop nutritional status testing and precision agriculture technologies; amelioration of crop varieties has been directed toward higher nutrient/fertilizer use efficiency.
