This thesis discusses the dynamic magnetic properties and also the physics behind different relaxation mechanisms in ferromagnetic thin films using comprehensive experimental investigations by means of broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique. In chapter one the basics of ferromagnetic resonance technique and the experimental features of the FMR setup used in this study are discussed, also the FMR data analysis is explained. Chapter two is devoted to the study of the interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and damping parameter in Co2FeAl thin films. In chapter three broadband temperature dependent FMR measurements were carried out on Ni80Fe20/Gd thin films to investigate the behavior of ferromagnetic relaxation, and gyromagnetic ratio as the system goes through the Curie temperature of Gd. In chapter four, the ferromagnetic relaxation mechanisms in ferrites are discussed. The low loss Nikel Ferrite and Lithium ferrite single crystal, thin and ultra-thin films were characterized by detailed FMR measurements to investigate the effect of microstructural defects on the magnetization relaxation. A comprehensive study on the interlayer exchange coupling strength in Co90Fe10/Ru/ Co90Fe10 multilayers is the subject of chapter five, in which the mutual spin pumping is discussed as a recently discovered channel for relaxation in exchange coupled multilayers.

Book excerpt: In hybrid organic spintronic devices, the active regions are essentially the hybrid interfaces. The first part of this thesis shows that molecular exchange bias in Co/MTPP and Co/CoPc systems is not an interface effect but originates from air-driven oxidation of the Co films. The second part introduces a new Ferromagnetic Nuclear Resonance methodology which showed that 15 monolayers of ZnTPP are required to obtain heterostructures with continuous molecular films and that their morphology depends on the nature of the underlayer (Co or Fe). In addition, the interfaces are asymmetrical with sharp Co/ZnTPP interface and rough ZnTPP/Co interface. These analyses have been confirmed by TEM. Moreover, FNR showed that no interfacial magnetic hardening effect exists in these systems. This is consistent with the fact that the Co/ZnTPP interfaces are governed by weak van der Waals interactions and that no signature of strong chemical bonds between interfacial ZnTPP molecules and Co atoms has been identified. Finally, the magnetic measurements suggest that an antiferromagnetic indirect exchange coupling takes place between the FM electrodes through the organic film.

Book excerpt: A fundamental need in wireless communication and modern computer processors is to fabricate faster, smaller, and lower power-consumption circuits. A promising approach is the utilization of spin waves, or rather, magnons in ferromagnetic films. Quantum confinement in ultra-thin films permits the coexistence of several exchange-dominated magnon modes with terahertz-range frequencies and sub-nanometer length scales. By means of spin-polarized electron energy loss spectroscopy (SPEELS), these exchange-dominated terahertz magnons are directly probed in ultra-thin cobalt films on Ir(001), Cu(001) and Pt(111) single crystal surfaces. The dispersion relation of the quantized magnon modes depends particularly on the interatomic exchange interaction in individual layers. By tuning the exchange interaction, modes with opposite group velocities, and thus an opposite propagation direction of the wave packets, can be generated. Ab initio theoretical calculations as well as an analytical Heisenberg model reveal a spatial localization of the modes at the surface, interior, and interface of the film that opens an experimental access to the layer-dependent magnetic properties. In itinerant ferromagnets like cobalt the magnetic properties depend sensitively on many-body correlation effects in the electronic structure. Here, it is shown for the first time that spin-dependent correlations lead to a pronounced renormalization of the energy of the highest magnon mode by up to 260 meV, explaining the significant overestimation of theoretically predicted magnon energies and interatomic exchange interaction found in literature.

Book excerpt: In this thesis I shall demonstrate the use of FMR spectroscopy and FMRFM to study static and dynamic couplings in ferromagnetic materials with emphasis on interfaces. First, I introduce the basic concepts of ferromagnetic resonance and spin wave relaxation. Second, I present the results of using conventional FMR spectroscopy to study the tuneable static effective fields in a ferromagnet, which manifest as anisotropy fields that define the energy landscape and equilibrium direction of the magnetization. Third, I explore both dipolar and exchange couplings between magnetizations which are dynamic in nature, and only manifest when the magnetizations are precessing. Fourth, I demonstrate the use of FMRFM to observe the modification of localized modes in a ferromagnetic film engineered with a lateral interface. Fifth, I describe the design of an FMRFM microscope and management of spurious background effects in an FMRFM experiment. Sixth, I measure relaxation from the localized modes in an insulating ferromagnetic film, which reveal a size-dependent damping effect that was unexpected in an insulating system. This suggests that spin transport from the interface of the localized mode can dictate its relaxation, even in the absence of conduction electrons. Finally, I observe a frequency-independent linewidth broadening contribution that also depends on mode size and this may give a measure of the inhomogeneous fields within a ferromagnetic sample

Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] This thesis deals with magnetic exchange interactions in thin lm magnetic materials focusing on phenomena related to intrinsic parameters of magnetic, structural and chemical order. In particular, the investigation is of two magnetic thin film systems, a Cu0.94Mn0.06/Co multilayer displaying a temperature-dependent magnetic ordering due to exchange coupling originating from dilute paramagnetic Mn spins, and thin films of chemical order modulated FePt3, showing a unique self-exchange bias effect. Detailed real-space models of the magnetic structure are obtained using polarized neutron reffectometry and high-angle neutron diffraction, speciffcally chosen to probe interface and bulk magnetic characteristics, respectively, in connection with complementary structural and magnetic characterization tools. It will be discussed, how the random distribution of dilute magnetic impurity centers in the Cu0.94Mn0.06/Co multilayers leads to a temperature-dependent interlayer exchange coupling with a strong biquadratic component. This manifests in an in-plane magnetic domain structure with a canted magnetization, i.e. a deviation from collinear alignments of external magnetic field and magnetization. The domain magnetizations show a high degree of vertical correlation in the form of columns throughout the multilayer, in which the sense of canting alternates in sign for each subsequent magnetic layer. Detailed analysis of temperature and field dependences of the magnetic structure lead to fundamental exchange energies, which are utilized in constructing a phenomenological model of exchange interactions between dilute magnetic impurities and the ferromagnetic layers. In addition to this, the second study deals with the effect of chemical order of the constituent atoms in the alloy FePt3 on the magnetic order on atomic and sub-micrometer scales. Depending on the long-range chemical order, ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic grains exist below the respective transition temperatures. As such, the system constitutes a new way of controlling the magnetic composition of thin lms without changing the materials composition, stoichiometry or lattice structure. The interfacing of the two magnetic grains leads to the observation of a unique self-exchange bias effect. Based on studies in thin films of FePt3 with varying degree of chemical order and the evolution of exchange bias with respect to interface and volume of the chemically ordered grains, a mono-stoichiometric FePt3 ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic multilayer is presented. Analysis of the magnetic structure in the arti cially layered thin film elucidates the magnetic composition and origin of the observed exchange bias. Book excerpt: The study of magnetic exchange coupling in nanocomposites of magnetically-hard phases combined with magnetically-soft phases is important for the development of high-performance permanent magnets. The present work aimed to elucidate the microstructure-exchange coupling relationship in model hard/soft bilayers of CoPt(L10, hard)/Co(soft) in both the as-deposited and annealed states. The CoPt layer (25--100 nm) was deposited at room temperature and annealed at 700°C to develop the magnetically hard, ordered L1 0 structure prior to room-temperature deposition of Co (2.8--225 nm). The transformation from FCC to L10 in CoPt was accompanied by grain growth and evolution of a & lang;111 & rang; fiber texture. The L1 0 mean domain area reached approximately one sixth of the mean grain area in nearly-fully and fully ordered CoPt. The coercivity of CoPt and the contribution of a pinning-type mechanism to the coercivity increased with increasing annealing time, concurrent with the increase in L10 fraction. In CoPt/Co bilayers, Co exhibited a & lang;0001 & rang; fiber texture. For as-deposited bilayers, the exchange length of Co was close to the magnetic domain wall width for CoPt. Annealing the bilayers at 300--450°C resulted in minor microstructural changes, increased the extent or strength of coupling and thereby enhanced the reversal coherency of the bilayers such that a Co layer of twice the CoPt domain wall width was fully coupled to the CoPt. Note that in bilayers with robust coupling both phases are affected, i.e., the magnetically-hard phase is exchange-softened, while the magnetically-soft phase is exchange-hardened. In contrast to lower-temperature anneals, annealing at 500--550°C, or for extended periods at 450°C, resulted in interdiffusion of Co and CoPt, consumption of the latter and formation of two new FCC and HCP Co-Pt solid solutions. These interdiffused bilayers showed an increased reversal coherency and a highly developed out-of-film plane anisotropy. When the magnetic and microstructural data are considered together, this study shows that the properties of hard/soft nanocomposites depend not only on the dimensions of both phases, but also on the physical and magnetic characteristics of each phase. A most significant outcome of this work is the demonstration that exchange coupling may be altered, and perhaps tailored, by processing-induced changes in the interphase interface.
