Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical investigation of frequency doubling using ferrimagnetic materials with microwave resonators is presented. Theoreti cal and experimental results are correlated to obtain a better understanding of the process of frequency doubling with ferrimagnetic materials. The investigation started with an experimental in vestigation of a traveling-wave type frequency doubler. Polycrystalline strips of yttrium iron garnet and of Ferramic R-1 were placed in the traveling-wave type device. Although the effi ciency of the device was low, the experiments served their purpose by verifying the theory developed by Auld, et al. The traveling-wave device also served as a model for the more effi cient traveling-wave ferrite frequency doubler designed by Bady in which he utilized ferrimag netic materials with high anisotropy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Use of Ferrites at Microwave Frequencies describes the applications of ferrites at microwave frequencies and the apparatus involved. Topics covered range from the properties of ferrites to gyromagnetic and non-reciprocal effects, ferrite isolators, circulators, and modulators. The use of ferrites in variable frequency filter cavities is also discussed. Mathematical explanations are reduced to the strict minimum and only the results of calculations are indicated. This book consists of seven chapters and opens with a review of the theory of magnetism, touching on subjects such as the BOHR magneton, diamagnetism and paramagnetism, ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism, ferrimagnetism, and demagnetizing. The next chapter deals with the elementary theory of gyromagnetic effects and covers the kinetic moment theorem, precession of the spin moment, gyromagnetic resonance, complex permeability, and gyromagnetic effects in the atom. The reader is then introduced to ferrites and their properties; non-reciprocal effects and their applications; and ferrite isolators, circulators, and modulators. The final chapter describes the use of ferrites in the design of cavities whose resonant frequency is controlled by a magnetic field or filters with variable characteristics. This monograph is written primarily for microwave and electronics engineers.

Attempts to utilize this phenomenon for measuring the saturation magnetization of pure YIG samples and gallium substituted YIG samples show this method to be quite accurate for the narrow line width pure YIG material. However, in the measurement of gallium substituted YIG samples, difficulties were encountered in mode identification and interpretation of data. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous works on this subject tended to be too specialised, making it difficult for students who lack the necessary background in this subject to follow. This book attempts to remedy the situation by providing students from other disciplines the basic background necessary to understand the discussion in this book. In this way, it provides a bridge between basic science and applications/course work. The book begins by presenting the fundamental principles of microwave materials using electrical engineering terminology, hence providing the necessary background before it discusses well-known physical concepts or solid state. Having reviewed the basic concepts, it goes on to discuss a systematic procedure of describing the microwave properties of materials. The organised and comprehensive nature of the book makes it a very useful reading and reference source.

Book excerpt: Electromagnetic materials have both civilian and defence applications, such as novel antenna designs and protection against high power transients in densely packed printed circuits. For certain applications, the materials may be required to have special frequency response or polarization response to meet the component or system specifications. An in-depth understanding of the responses of materials to electromagnetic waves may even enable us to design and fabricate materials with properties not found in nature. This book constitutes the proceedings of the Symposium on Electromagnetic Materials, which provided a forum for scientists and engineers to report the latest research findings, to exchange ideas and information, and to establish research links.

Book excerpt: Advances in Microwaves, Volume 8 covers the developments in the study of microwaves. The book discusses the circuit forms for microwave integrated circuits; the analysis of microstrip transmission lines; and the use of lumped elements in microwave integrated circuits. The text also describes the microwave properties of ferrimagnetic materials, as well as their interaction with electromagnetic waves propagating in bounded waveguiding structures. The integration techniques useful at high frequencies; material technology for microwave integrated circuits; specific requirements on technology for distributed and lumped-element circuits; and characterization and utilization of solid-state devices in integrated circuits are also encompassed. The book further tackles microwave propagation on coupled pairs of microstrip transmission lines and computer-aided design, simulation and optimization of microwave technology. Microwave engineers will find the book invaluable.
