The calculated FS of this compound is very similar to SrFe2As2, the parent compound of the high temperature superconductors. Our data show that the Fermi surface is composed of two electron and two hole sheets in agreement with bandstructure calculations. Several of the sheets show strong c-axis warping emphasizing the importance of three-dimensionality in the non-magnetic state of the ternary pnictides. We find that the electron and hole pockets have a different topology, implying that this material does not satisfy a ([pi], [pi]) nesting condition.

Book excerpt: This thesis combines highly accurate optical spectroscopy data on the recently discovered iron-based high-temperature superconductors with an incisive theoretical analysis. Three outstanding results are reported: (1) The superconductivity-induced modification of the far-infrared conductivity of an iron arsenide with minimal chemical disorder is quantitatively described by means of a strong-coupling theory for spin fluctuation mediated Cooper pairing. The formalism developed in this thesis also describes prior spectroscopic data on more disordered compounds. (2) The same materials exhibit a sharp superconductivity-induced anomaly for photon energies around 2.5 eV, two orders of magnitude larger than the superconducting energy gap. The author provides a qualitative interpretation of this unprecedented observation, which is based on the multiband nature of the superconducting state. (3) The thesis also develops a comprehensive description of a superconducting, yet optically transparent iron chalcogenide compound. The author shows that this highly unusual behavior can be explained as a result of the nanoscopic coexistence of insulating and superconducting phases, and he uses a combination of two complementary experimental methods - scanning near-field optical microscopy and low-energy muon spin rotation - to directly image the phase coexistence and quantitatively determine the phase composition. These data have important implications for the interpretation of data from other experimental probes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fermi surface of the organic superconductor [beta]-(ET)2IBr2 investigated by measurements of the de Haas - van Alphen (dHvA) effect has been found to have the typical two-dimensional cylindrical form. A small amount of corrugation could be quantitatively determined by the distinctive angular dependence of beating nodes. the existence of up to four almost identical frequencies in the dHvA signal may be explained by magnetic interaction effects within the samples. Due to the 1/cos[Theta]- behavior of the effective mass spin-splitting zeros could be detected.

Book excerpt: The de Haas-van Alphen effect has been measured in the ordered alloy beta prime-AgZn by the modulation method, improving and extending the results of earlier observations. The results are in good agreement with recent theoretical calculations of the Fermi surface, although some of the predicted orbits have not been observed. The hole octahedron in the first band and the triangular hole in the second band have been identified unambiguously, and the shape of the octahedron has been determined by inversion. (Author).

Book excerpt: The de Haas-van Alphen effect (DHVA) at temperatures from 1.6K to 7.9K was used to investigate the Fermi surface of SnTe. DHVA data in SnTe separated into two regions, a normal region above a carrier concentration of 3 x 10 to the 20th power/cc and an anomalous region below. Above a carrier concentration of 3 x 10 to the 20th power/cc, oscillations of a second band were observed, in addition to the first band oscillations. The second-band pockets are probably non-parabolic and have a shape greatly elongated in a 100 direction. A 111 cyclotron mass and Dingle temperature were measured in the first band and a 100 cyclotron mass and Dingle temperature in the second. In addition, a density of states was determined. Below a carrier concentration of 3 x 10 to the 20th power/cc several branches were found describing the first-band pockets at L which are elongated in a 111 direction. Our observed minimum extremal cross section of the first band surface is more in agreement with the surface calculated by Rabii than with that calculated by Tung and Cohen. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Fermi surface of Nb3Sn has been derived from an APW band calculation. de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations have been observed in Nb3Sn and V3Si which give a consistent FS description. Using single crystals of high resistance ratio's and magntic fields up to 400 kOe, dHvA oscillations have been seen in the normal state for both specimens. New features of the Fermi surface include osculated ellipsoidal structure around M and a large cubical structure around LAMBDA.

Book excerpt: These proceedings demonstrate how far scientist have come in the last four years of high temperature superconductivity. Knowledge of the energy bands and Fermi surfaces from experiment has come rather late. Photoemission, first showed proof of the validity of the energy band calculations. Positron annihilation, presented by West, after a rough start, is now giving evidence of the Fermi surface. Both of these techniques involve electronic excitations and hence, although they show the Fermi surface, do not put as severe a constraint on various models for superconductivity as does the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect. This is a true measurement of the electronic ground state in an applied magnetic field where the frequency of oscillatory magnetization yields extremal cross-sectional areas of the Fermi surface. The authors have already reported some of their Fermi surface work at two conferences but present here discussion of several more important aspects of the work. 11 refs., 2 figs.

Book excerpt: A study of the de Haas-Van Alphen effect in caesium by the pulsed field method, under carefully controlled experimental conditions, has yielded information about the orientation dependence of the Fermi surface cross-section. A computer analysis of the results in terms of cubic harmonic series has indicated a probable radial distortion of some +3.3% in the (110) direction, -0.9% in the (100) direction, and -1.4% in the (111) direction; this is compared with the predictions of band structure calculations which, though indicating approximately the correct shape of Fermi surface, are appreciably in error as to the magnitude of the deviations from a sphere. The observed Fermi surface distortion is also discussed in terms of its effect on the low temperature thermoelectric power of caesium. The volume of the Fermi surface is found to be within a few tenths of 1% of that calculated from published lattice constant data. Strong variations of signal strength with orientation were observed; these have been attributed in part to the effect of spin-splitting of the Landau levels. (Author).

Book excerpt: Ferromagnetism of metallic systems, especially those including transition metals, has been a controversial subject of modern science for a long time. This controversy sterns from the apparent dual character of the d-electrons responsible for magnetism in transition metals, i.e., they are itinerant elec trons described by band theory in their ground state, while at finite tem peratures they show various properties that have long been attributed to a system consisting of local magnetic moments. The most familiar example of these properties is the Curie-Weiss law of magnetic susceptibility obeyed by almost all ferromagnets above their Curie temperatures. At first the problem seemed to be centered around whether the d-elec trons themselves are localized or itinerant. This question was settled in the 1950s and early 1960s by various experimental investigations, in particular by observations of d-electron Fermi surfaces in ferromagnetic transition metals. These observations are generally consistent with the results of band calculations. Theoretical investigations since then have concentrated on explaining this dual character of d-electron systems, taking account of the effects of electron-electron correlations in the itinerant electron model. The problem in physical terms is to study the spin density fluctuati·ons, which are ne glected in the mean-field or one-electron theory, and their influence on the physical properties.
