Getting Beyond "Interesting": Teaching Students the Vocabulary of Appeal to Discuss Their Reading is a practical application book that gives librarians all the tools they need to implement the teaching of both appeal terms and Book Hook writing and sharing. When students know how to write Book Hooks and have access to an easy-to-use system for allowing students to share Book Hooks, the result is greatly increased reading through the power of peer recommendations. This book not only supplies a detailed plan for teaching appeal terms and Book Hook writing, but it also provides two extensive appendices containing all the black line masters and forms needed to implement these lessons. As a result, practitioners will be able to enhance their students' reading culture through increased sharing of reading—and most importantly, by empowering students with the ability to clearly define their reading preferences.

Generations of savvy librarians and educators have relied on this detailed subject guide to children's picture books for all aspects of children's services, and this new edition does not disappoint. Covering more than 18,000 books published through 2017, it empowers users to identify current and classic titles on topics ranging from apples to zebras. Organized simply, with a subject guide that categorizes subjects by theme and topic and subject headings arranged alphabetically, this reference applies more than 1,200 intuitive (as opposed to formal catalog) subject terms to children's picture books, making it both a comprehensive and user-friendly resource that is accessible to parents and teachers as well as librarians. This is against her better judgment, for the café is modest, and she has nothing to spare. But in no time at all, the cat becomes a celebrity, charming all sorts of important visitors, including Giuseppe Verdi and the pope himself. In the end, Nini’s resonant purr and the comfort it brings to a little girl produce a small miracle. Featuring humorous illustrations with a vintage feel, this inspiring story about a real cat assures us that acts of kindness can be rewarded in unexpected ways. Includes an author’s note.

Book excerpt: I was born through the sin of my mother and father. I was continually reminded of this through my tender years as a child. When your own dad tells you that you’re the worthless product of a male hooker, that you’re not pretty or smart enough to be of his blood, you hang your head in shame. I was humiliated by the piercing stares I got from those he informed of this. I was exposed to witchcraft. My mother was an alcoholic, and my dad had extramarital affairs with numerous women. As a child, I was also the victim of sexual assault. At the age of ten, my life took a turn for the better. My mother bore twin babies. Because she rejected the boy child, I was taught how to care for him. For the first time in my life someone showed me love, and I loved him back. I had never felt love before then. If my mom and dad did love me, they never showed it. My baby brother was two when he died. I watched as my mother murdered him. His life had given me joy, and now he was gone. I stopped communicating. Between this, my deformities, and my learning disability, I became a victim to all who knew me. I was commonly called retarded by teachers, students, and my own father. Even strangers on the street would call me names. This led me to become an unstable adult. As a woman, my life was a mess. I had no idea how to show love, or even what it felt like. Therefore, I damaged every relationship I had. Then I met Jesus. He taught me agape love. I learned to love like Jesus does. The Holy Ghost set me free of over a thousand demons. In every way, He set me free. I am living proof that our God reigns, that He can take the most corrupted mess and create something of beauty. In my soul, I was an ugly duckling, but Jesus made me into a beautiful swan. What the Lord has done for me, He can do for you.

Book excerpt: Hidden in the desolate woods on the Central California coast, lost to time and memory, is a WPA mural unlike any other created during the 1930s. This one was not simply fashioned from charcoal and paint; it was crafted out of undying evil--the evil of an ancient demonic army called Legion. When structural inspector Jack Hayden stumbles upon the mural in a ruined civic building, he tries to convince himself that it might add to the crumbling structure’s value. But that note of hopefulness is quickly replaced by terror as the mural spreads its cruel, nightmarish horror over Hayden and everyone in his life. Soon he's leading his own attack force made up of those who have managed to fend off the evil of the mural in their souls, but now must do so in physical terms...or die trying. The fictional debut of a new master of horror fiction!
