Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major new account of Victorian poetry and its place in the field of literary studies. The Burden of Rhyme shows how the nineteenth-century search for the origin of rhyme shaped the theory and practice of poetry. For Victorians, rhyme was not (as it was for the New Critics, and as it still is for us) a mere technique or ahistorical form. Instead, it carried vivid historical fantasies derived from early studies of world literature. Naomi Levine argues that rhyme’s association with the advent of literary modernity and with a repertoire of medievalist, Italophilic, and orientalist myths about love, loss, and poetic longing made it a sensitive historiographic instrument. Victorian poets used rhyme to theorize both literary history and the most elusive effects of aesthetic form. This Victorian formalism, which insisted on the significance of origins, was a precursor to and a challenge for twentieth-century methods. In uncovering the rich relationship between Victorian poetic forms and a forgotten style of literary-historical thought, The Burden of Rhyme reveals the unacknowledged influence of Victorian poetics—and its repudiation—on the development of modern literary criticism.

Book excerpt: I began writing rhyme in 1998 just after attending the funeral services of the son, aged 23, of a colleague of mine. During that church service, I felt an urge to put some thoughts and feelings on paper: that was the genesis of this effort. Over the years as I felt the urge write, I did so. Failure to record one's emotions is to ensure that such moments, few, precious and honest, are lost forever. Emotions caught on paper may be nothing more than to expose one's inner feelings, Often when I wrote them only G-d and I knew what was intended. Now their true meaning in may cases may only be within the purview of the reader and G-d. The Opening Rhyme (in the this the first in a series of Three Books of rhyme), helps to explain why I write: POETRY Poetry, emotion captured in rhyme, By those so inclined who have the time, All experience it just the same, Call it by some other name. Why record it you may ask, Just another useless task, Or a means by which to share, With others, feelings laid bare. If minds it serves to open, expand, Emotion lets flow, that would be grand, A medium, though to may be slow, It may yet help people grow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A word creates a thought. A thought creates an emotion. An emotion creates an image. The cycle of verbal to visual art. What I found so beautiful about this cycle is that no two people will ever come up with the same image. They may have similar aspects, however, each will be unique to the person who read the word and felt the emotion that created their own image. With this very idea in mind, I decided to collaborate with my very talented mother. I wanted to see my words through the eyes of her emotions. And I must say, it was inspiring to see the words that captured her thought process with each poem. I hope you enjoy this verbal and visual journey as much as we did and reflect upon your own image as you read each poem.

Novak (bestselling author of The Book With No Pictures) described this groundbreaking poetry collection as "Smart and sweet, wild and wicked, brilliantly funny--it's everything a book for kids should be." Lauded by critics as a worthy heir to such greats as Silverstein, Seuss, Nash and Lear, Harris's hilarious debut molds wit and wordplay, nonsense and oxymoron, and visual and verbal sleight-of-hand in masterful ways that make you look at the world in a whole new wonderfully upside-down way. With enthusiastic endorsements from bestselling luminaries such as Lemony Snicket, Judith Viorst, Andrea Beaty, and many others, this entirely unique collection offers a surprise around every corner. Adding to the fun: Lane Smith, bestselling creator of beloved hits like It's a Book and The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, has spectacularly illustrated this extraordinary collection with nearly one hundred pieces of appropriately absurd art. It's a mischievous match made in heaven! "Ridiculous, nonsensical, peculiar, outrageous, possibly deranged--and utterly, totally, absolutely delicious. Read it! Immediately!" --Judith Viorst, bestselling author of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Book excerpt: If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry, few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop's revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible, allowing an MC's wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners. Examining rap history's most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques, literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America's least understood poets, unpacking their surprisingly complex craft, and according rap poetry the respect it deserves.
