The animals experimented on were a mixed herd of young and mature cows in various stages of lactation, from fresh in milk to six months after parturition. Half of the herd had been bought from farmers and were native cows, there were four heif ers with their first calves, and the' remainder were thoroughbred Shorthorns. Taking all together they were a fair lot of cows9 weighing at beginning of experiment an average of 948% pounds. The kinds of fodder and grain used were com fodder or stover, bean vines, mixed hay containing a large proportion of alsike and red clover, millet cut when seed was fully formed, mixed grain consisting of ninety pounds of northern com ground together with the cob, and twenty-five pounds of oats. Gluten meal from the Chicago Glucose Works, buckwheat ground with hulls not separated, and clear corn meal ground from northern corn. The results obtained in this experiment go in the same direction as those of the preceding ones, but the advantage from the heavy over the light grain feeding is more marked than in these, viz., an increase of 14% in the production of milk and 9% in the production of butterfat as a result of feeding a little over a ton more grain, With possible minor changes in the amounts of roughage eaten by the cows. The possible causes of this more pronounced reaction than that obtained in either of the previous experiments cannot be fully discussed here, but it may be suggested that it may be due to the relatively larger amount of grain fed on this experiment or a somewhat poorer quality of roughage fed to the cows, especially silage. It is plain that even in this case the cost of the extra grain fed is great er than What the increase in butterfat would bring even at retail prices, so that the result of this experiment alone furnishes no argument in favor of a heavy system of grain feeding. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Cattle Feeding and Dairying In the present volume the aim is to develop and explain those fundamental principles which are the basis of all effective control in farming operations rather than to prescribe rules for particular cases. The more important conclusions are, however, brought to the test of comparison with rations actually used by farmers. Numerous examples of the latter are described and criticised in the light of the principles from the dual point of view of efficiency and pecuniary economy. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the rudiments of inorganic and organic chemistry, but not necessarily with the more advanced work on proteins, carbohydrates, etc. This is given in condensed form in Part I. together with some constitutional formulae and other matter occasionally required for reference. It is possible, therefore, to avoid digression in the remaining sections which deal with the requirements of the animals, the feeding stuffs and the chemistry of dairying, respectively. The last-mentioned subject cannot well be separated either from the preliminary matter above referred to or from the question of milk production which, of course, is dealt with in Part II. The data are derived partly from the German and partly from American experiments, and the interpretation of them is based largely upon the Rothamsted investigations. The feeding standards of Wolff and Kellner's system of starch equivalents are examined; but an attempt is made to break away, more or less completely, from both, and from the tyranny of the rule of three in which they are involved. He mixes the two samples Of each cow's milk thor oughly and then tests the composite sample for percentage Of butter fat. The day the test is made is considered as the middle day of the testing period, and the record Of that day is multiplied by the number of days in the testing period. From the herd-record book the farmer can at any time get the record Of his herd and Of each cow for every month from the beginning of the testing year. He can also get totals for each cow. The herd records include feed cost and production Of milk and butterfat. The individual-cow records include all this and the number Of pounds Of each kind Of feed consumed. At the end of the testing year the farmer can get from the herd record book the yearly summary Of his herd and Of each cow. AS the years pass he can compare the yearly records and determine what progress his herd is making and what progress each cow is making. If the herd-record books are filled out completely and carefully, the farmer can get all this information quickly, and from this knowledge of the records Of his cows he can go forward, without guesswork, in the improvement of his herd. With a well-kept herd-record book, the farmer is able to build up his herd. Rapidly through careful selection, planned breeding, and proper feeding.
