Book excerpt: The Federal Agency Task Force for Missing and Exploited Children was created in 1995, by then Attorney General Janet Reno to coordinate Federal resources and services to effectively address the needs of missing, abducted, and exploited children and their families. The mission of the Task Force is to (1) advocate for missing and exploited children and their families, (2) initiate positive change to enhance services and resources for missing and exploited children, their families, and the agencies and organizations that serve them, (3) promote communication and cooperation among agencies and organizations at the Federal level, and (4) serve as the focal point for coordination of services and resources. The Task Force includes representatives from 16 Federal agencies and 2 non-Federal agencies that work directly with cases involving missing and exploited children and their families. The term “missing child,” as used in this Directory, refers to any youth whose whereabouts are unknown to his or her legal guardian. This includes children who have been abducted or kidnapped by a family or a nonfamily member, a child who is a throw away, or a child who is otherwise missing. The term “child exploitation” refers to any youth under the age of 18 who has been exploited or victimized for profit or personal advantage, which includes children who are victims of pornography, prostitution, sexual tourism, trafficking, and sexual abuse. These missing and exploited cases include both national and international cases. First published in 1996, the Federal Resources on Missing and Exploited Children's Directory has become an effective resource that can be used by agencies and organizations involved in the safe recovery of missing children. The Directory contains the most up-to-date information on and links to other agencies and organizations that can help in finding a solution. The Directory is a compilation of the many services, programs, publications, and training that address issues of child sexual exploitation, child pornography, child abduction, and missing children cases. It describes the role of each Federal Task Force member agency in the location and recovery of missing and exploited children, the types of services and support that are available, the various methods for accessing these services, and additional resources. This new edition of the Directory has been redesigned to provide comprehensive, accessible agency and organization information in a concise, user-friendly format. It will be an indispensable tool for practitioners dealing with the many challenges of returning children safely.

This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, more than two million children around the world fall victim to commercial sexual exploitation. The numbers of children sexually abused for non-commercial purposes are even higher. Put simply, the growing, increasingly-organized epidemic of child exploitation demands a coordinated response. The aim of this book is to bring some fresh thinking to this complicated area of the law, and to help erase some of its counterproductive mythology. The book provides the first comprehensive, practical introduction to the history and present-day reality of child sexual exploitation, as well as to the interconnected web of domestic and transnational federal laws and law enforcement efforts launched in response thereto. It is written from the distinctive perspective of those who have spent their careers in the trenches investigating, prosecuting, and adjudicating these intricate and commonly emotional cases. Relying on real-world examples, the authors offer proscriptive and descriptive practical advice and reform proposals aimed at those involved at all levels in this difficult area. Serving as a “first-line” resource for clear, practical thinking on the range of complex, and often misunderstood, investigative, prosecutorial, and rehabilitative issues surrounding child exploitation cases, this work is a must-have for anyone with interest in the protection of children from sexual exploitation and trafficking.

This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day in the United States, children and adolescents are victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. Despite the serious and long-term consequences for victims as well as their families, communities, and society, efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes are largely under supported, inefficient, uncoordinated, and unevaluated. Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States examines commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents of the United States under age 18. According to this report, efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes require better collaborative approaches that build upon the capabilities of people and entities from a range of sectors. In addition, such efforts need to confront demand and the individuals who commit and benefit from these crimes. The report recommends increased awareness and understanding, strengthening of the law's response, strengthening of research to advance understanding and to support the development of prevention and intervention strategies, support for multi-sector and interagency collaboration, and creation of a digital information-sharing platform. A nation that is unaware of these problems or disengaged from solutions unwittingly contributes to the ongoing abuse of minors. If acted upon in a coordinated and comprehensive manner, the recommendations of Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States can help advance and strengthen the nation's emerging efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors in the United States.

Book Synopsis Extraordinary Circumstances by : Scott Berne
Download or read book Extraordinary Circumstances written by Scott Berne and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of nine, Scott Berne's childhood teetered on the edge of a precipice. His parents' nasty divorce and the painful custody battle that followed created an upheaval unlike anything he'd ever known. But when his mother's precarious mental health led the judge to give sole custody of Scott and his younger brother to his father, the unthinkable happened-Harriet Berne kidnapped her two boys. Extraordinary Circumstances shares the tumultuous true story of what became one of the first test cases of parental abduction in the United States under the Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act. With remarkable candor and insight, Scott recalls the terror, fear, and despair he experienced as his mother moved him and his brother through five countries and thirteen residences in an attempt to stay one step ahead of the authorities. The case attracted national and international media attention, culminating in Harriet's capture in 1981. For years to come, the ordeal continued for Scott as he dealt with emotional wounds far worse than any physical pain. Yet he refused to succumb to pity, and he became determined to share his story with those suffering a similar fate. With a unique mixture of childhood innocence and adult sensibility, Extraordinary Circumstances explores Scott's dramatic journey from victim to victor.
