Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lifting a Ton of Feathers is not only a survival guide, it is also a destroyer of academic myths about women's career chances in the university, and a revelation of the catch-22 positions in which women find themselves. Caplan demonstrates that while many women believe that when they fail it is their fault, their fate is more likely to be sealed by their encounter with the male environment, and by the manner in which they are tossed about by it. She aims to help women avoid self-blame and understand the real sources of their problems. Readers will find the information about the mine-field of academia for women infuriating, but the means of telling it highly entertaining. Women account for more than half of all undergraduate students in the US and Canada, yet they make up only 10 per cent of faculty members at the level of full professor. What happens to women between freshman level, the tenure track, and the ensuing following professional years that keeps them out of the highest levels of academia? Paula Caplan is herself a veteran of the academic career struggle, and she sets out to explore this question with not only her own observations but also those of many women whom she has interviewed, and with a strong backing of established research. With these tools she provides a clear-eyed assessment of what women who have embarked on an academic career, and those who are considering it, may expect. Forewarned is forearmed, and Caplan presents a list of the forms that the maleness of the environment take: two of these are the conflict between professional and family responsibilities, and sexual harassment. In addition, her book offers advice on practical techniques of how to prepare a curriculum vitae, how to handle job interviews, and how to apply for promotions and tenure. A final chapter is a unique checklist which serves two purposes: to provide guidance in a search for a woman-positive institution and to give suggestions for ways individual women, and women in groups, can work to improve the situation at their own institutions.

Book excerpt: The birds are behaving in a strange manner. Two black crows, messengers from the Old Kingdom, arrive to tell Miss Jay and her team that an ancient curse is still active. In order to lift the curse and bring healing to the Earth and All Life, they must solve a riddle in just four days. How is Miss Jay connected to this curse? What is the secret of the Dragon Tooth brooch worn by Cassandra, Pallas Athena, and Miss Jays ancestors? How can the friends bring healing across bloodlines? In their search for these answers, Bindi, Biggles, Kooky, Vargo, Master Zen and Miss Jay embark on an exciting journey, starting from a small island near Tasmania, where all that is large appears small. From there, they travel to Greece to meet with the ancient gods and Th emis, the oracle of Delphi. In the magical canyons of Sedona, Arizona, they seek out a wise elder with the secrets of shape-shifting, dance, and the medicine wheel. Eventually, their search takes them to Africa. Along the Zambezi River, they meet Oshun, goddess of water, who summons truth from the water itself. Miss Jay learns why she left the Dragons, who Bindi really is, and why they have been brought together. Can the friends work together on this next phase of ascension to bring through the new energy of the New Earth? Can they heal the bloodlines and balance the masculine and feminine energy? Will they ever be free, happy, and at peace?

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of When Mr. Dog Bites and The Bombs That Brought Us Together comes a compelling, thought-provoking, heartbreaking, and timely story that asks: how far would you go for family? As the person who cares for his terminally-ill mother, Bobby Seed has a lot on his plate. Add to that a responsibility to watch over his little brother (with his endless question about why their mother is in so much pain), keeping up at school, and navigating a relationship with a girl friend who wants to be a girlfriend, and he's barely keeping his head above the water. Something's got to give. But then Bobby's mother makes a request, one that seems impossible. If he agrees, he won't just be soothing her pain. He'll be helping her end it -- and end everything. Angry, stirring, and tender, this bold novel tells a story of choice and compassion, exploring the lengths to which we'll go for the people we love.

Book excerpt: The story in Ratip’s debut novel revolves around the struggle of Turan Akova, who is a world-renowned pianist-composer, to prevent and eventually eliminate the extraterrestrial devil’s plans to dominate the world in a shocking and most audacious way. This is a heart-pounding suspense thriller with gruelling intensity. A monumentally scary and chillingly tense story. Italian poet Tasso’s words best describe Turan Akova, the hero of this novel: ‘Is it possible to transform a raging, devastating, destroying hurricane into a morning breeze, a mad sea into a charming lake, and lightning into a rose? I am speaking of the Turk. The Turk who is like a ruthless hurricane, a terrific sea, and a merciless lightning when attacking his enemy, is a morning breeze, and a clear lake with his friends or when facing a disarmed enemy. To change this charming breeze into a hurricane, this resplendent blue lake into a horrid sea, this rose with its fragrance of nobility to lightning would be indeed a blunder that would offend Nature itself...”

Book excerpt: The Finding of the Blue Feather is divided into three books. In Book One, Once Upon a Time in Reality, Molly Ryan, a young American woman, is on a journey to find herself-or, perhaps, lose herself. On a whim she settles in Weletta, a small town nestled in the mountains of northern Pennsylvania. During a walk through those mountains she finds a small blue feather and the portal to another world, a world called the dream world, simply because it has no other name. This world is quite different from the Reality in which Molly has grown up. What she has been brought up to call the paranormal is normal in the dream world. Molly discovers something else in the dream world-a young man who calls himself Alan. Soon Molly has a decision to make: to stay in Reality, with the possibility of realizing her life's dream or to make a transition into the unknown-into the Dream World, a world from which she will probably never return. After much deliberation and self-examination, she chooses the dream world in which to spend her life.In Book Two, Back to Reality, after many years, Molly, answering a need she does not fully understand, does return to Reality. She discovers the reason for her return when she saves the life of a friend, Ginny, and takes her to the dream world. Ginny falls in love with the dream world and with David, one of its residents. Ginny fits well into the dream world and her future seems to be secure, but she is troubled by an urge to return to Reality, an urge she cannot ignore. David does not fully understand Ginny's feelings but neither can he part with her. With no more than the clothes they are wearing, the two make the transition to Reality, a Reality that has changed and will change even more. Both of them must trust to the will of the universe and David's ability to adapt to what, to him, is a peculiar, foreign world. In Book Three, Beyond Reality, Little Jake, Molly's son, is little no longer. Now a grown man, trained for many years in mystic ways by the Wanderers, an ascetic band of nomads of the dream world, he is ready to fulfill the role for which he has been prepared. He will go to Reality to be the cornerstone of a movement composed of residents of Reality and migrants from the dream world. All have been chosen to bring new knowledge and understanding to Reality, to form a new society founded on peace. It is a mission containing many difficulties and many perils. Molly accepts his leaving with sadness and reluctance, knowing she will never see her son again. Without any plan other than to follow the will of the universe, Jake goes to Reality to fulfill his mission.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here he is, husband and father, scruffy romantic, a shambolic scholar--a man adrift in the wake of his wife's sudden, accidental death. And there are his two sons who like him struggle in their London apartment to face the unbearable sadness that has engulfed them. The father imagines a future of well-meaning visitors and emptiness, while the boys wander, savage and unsupervised. In this moment of violent despair they are visited by Crow--antagonist, trickster, goad, protector, therapist, and babysitter. This self-described "sentimental bird," at once wild and tender, who "finds humans dull except in grief," threatens to stay with the wounded family until they no longer need him. As weeks turn to months and the pain of loss lessens with the balm of memories, Crow's efforts are rewarded and the little unit of three begins to recover: Dad resumes his book about the poet Ted Hughes; the boys get on with it, grow up. Part novella, part polyphonic fable, part essay on grief, Max Porter's extraordinary debut combines compassion and bravura style to dazzling effect. Full of angular wit and profound truths, Grief Is the Thing with Feathers is a startlingly original and haunting debut by a significant new talent.

Over the span of eleven years, seven Indigenous high school students died in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Five were found dead in the rivers surrounding Lake Superior, below a sacred Indigenous site. Using a sweeping narrative focusing on the lives of the students, award-winning author Tanya Talaga delves into the history of this northern city that has come to manifest Canada’s long struggle with human rights violations against Indigenous communities.
