Book excerpt: Vibration based structural health monitoring has become more common in recent years as the required data acquisition and analysis systems become more affordable to deploy. It has been proposed that by monitoring changes in the dynamic signature of a structure, primarily the natural frequency, one can detect damage. This approach to damage detection is made difficult by the fact that environmental factors, such as temperature, have been shown to cause variation in the dynamic signature in a structure, effectively masking those changes due to damage. For future vibration based structural health monitoring systems to be effective, the relationship between environmental factors and natural frequency must be understood such that variation in the dynamic signature due to environmental noise can be removed. A monitoring system on the I-35W St. Anthony Falls Bridge, which crosses the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, MN, has been collecting vibration and temperature data since the structures opening in 2008. This provides a uniquely large data set, in a climate that sees extreme variation in temperature, to test the relationship between the dynamic signature of a concrete structure and temperature. A system identification routine utilizing NExT-ERA/DC is proposed to effectively analyze this large data set, and the relationship between structural temperature and natural frequency is investigated.

Book excerpt: Since the opening of the I-35W Saint Anthony Falls Bridge in 2008, over 500 sensors have been collecting data to better understand the behavior of post-tensioned concrete box girder structures. Recent research in the accelerometers installed on the bridge indicates they can be effectively used in a vibration-based structural health monitoring system, but previous studies have shown that natural frequency alone may not be sufficient to determine the performance of the structure. Vertical displacements were believed to be a simpler performance measure as direct comparisons can be made with design calculations and maintenance guidelines. To avoid the shortcomings of conventional displacement measurement options, this study focuses on using the currently installed accelerometers to estimate the vertical displacements of the southbound bridge. The proposed technique utilizes up-to-date modal parameters within a dual Kalman filter to estimate the vertical displacements of the structure from noisy acceleration measurements. When applied to the I-35W Saint Anthony Falls Bridge, it was found that the dual Kalman filter approach captures only dynamic displacements due to relatively slow loading (e.g., traffic loading and thermal loading) and the corresponding low-frequency static displacements are likely too small for GPS measurements due to the high stiffness of the structure.

Book excerpt: The I-35W St. Anthony Falls bridge was highly instrumented with over 500 sensors to verify design assumptions, serve as a testbed to examine bridge sensing techniques, and evaluate the effectiveness of different bridge monitoring strategies. The instrumentation deployed on the bridge to investigate the structural behavior included vibrating wire strain gages (VWSGs), thermistors, fiber optic sensors (SOFO), resistance strain gages, linear potentiometers, accelerometers, and corrosion monitoring sensors. This report documented the successes and challenges of the monitoring program over the first ten years of the bridge's life. In particular, the effectiveness of different strain measurement techniques and sensor distributions were addressed. Previous investigations of temperature-dependent and time-dependent behavior were also expanded with the larger data set to better understand the behavior of post-tensioned concrete box girder structures with the potential to impact future designs.

Book excerpt: Real-time monitoring of fracture critical steel bridges can potentially enhance inspection practices by tracking the behavior of the bridge. Significant advances have occurred in recent years on the development of robust hardware for field monitoring applications. These systems can monitor, process, and store data from a variety of sensors (e.g. strain gages, crack propagation gages etc.) to track the behavior of the bridge. The research outlined in this dissertation is part of a large study focused on the development of a wireless system for use in long-term monitoring of bridges. The wireless monitoring system had a target maintenance-free life of ten years, and independent from the power grid. Thus, the feasibility to harvest energy for the monitoring system is an important step in the development of the system. In addition, the reliability of the sensors in the bridge is very important upon the success of the system. The focus of this dissertation is on two primary aspects of the wireless monitoring system. First, the feasibility to harvest energy from vehicular-induced vibrations is evaluated through analytical models of highway bridges under truck loads. Acceleration results from simple line-element models and detailed finite element models of five steel bridges in Texas and Oregon are compared with actual field data from the same bridges. Second, the dissertation also highlights studies on the identification of strain gages and installation procedures that result in long lives. In addition, the effect of temperature fluctuations and other environmental factors on the sensor drift and noise is also considered. In long-term monitoring applications, slight sensor drift and noise can build up over time to produce misleading results. This dissertation presents the results of transient dynamic analyses of bridges under moving truck loading and laboratory tests on gage durability that were conducted as part of a research project sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

During the past two decades, there have been significant advances in the sensing technologies employed in long-span bridge health monitoring. However, interpretation of the massive monitoring data is still lagging behind. This book establishes a series of measurement interpretation frameworks that focus on bridge site environmental conditions, and global and local responses of suspension bridges. Using the proposed frameworks, it subsequently offers new insights into the structural behaviors of long-span suspension bridges. As a valuable resource for researchers, scientists and engineers in the field of bridge structural health monitoring, it provides essential information, methods, and practical algorithms that can facilitate in-service bridge performance assessments.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the conditions of aging transportation infrastructure have drawn great attention to the maintenance and inspection of highway bridges. With the increasing importance of life-lines, such as highways, to the national economy and the well-being of the nation, there is a need to maximize the degree of mobility of the system. This requires not just routine, or critical event (such as an earthquake) based, inspections, but rather a means of continuous monitoring of a structure to provide an assessment of changes as a function of time and an early warning of an unsafe condition using real-time data. A promising technique, namely Vibration-based Structural Health Monitoring, has been proposed to address this problem. The basic premise of Vibration-Based Structural Health Monitoring is that changes in structural characteristics, such as mass, stiffness and damping, will affect the global vibrational response of the structure. Thus, by studying the changes in measured structural vibration behavior and in essence solving an inverse problem, the unknown changes of structural properties can be identified. A new vibration-based structural health monitoring methodology for highway bridges is proposed in this dissertation. Progress is made in several key areas, including operation modal analysis, damage localization and finite element model updating. The real-world implementation of a health monitoring system on a highway bridge demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed technique and pointed out directions for future research.

Book excerpt: This study uses the vibration data of two full-scale bridges, subjected to controlled damage, along the I-40 west, near downtown Knoxville, TN, to evaluate the feasibility of time series-based damage identification techniques for structural health monitoring. The vibration data was acquired for the entrance ramp to James White Parkway from I-40 westbound, and the I-40 westbound bridge over 4th Avenue, before the bridges were demolished during I-40 expansion project called Smartfix40. The vibration data was recorded using an array of triaxial geophones, highly sensitive sensors to record vibrations, in healthy and damaged conditions of the bridges. The vibration data is evaluated using linear stationary time series models to extract damage sensitive-features (DSFs) which are used to identify the condition of bridge. Two time series-based damage identification techniques are used and developed in this study. In the first technique, the vibration data is corrected for sensor transfer function suitable for given geophone type and then convolved with random values to create input for autoregressive (AR) time series models. A two-stage prediction model, combined AR and autoregressive with exogenous input (ARX), is employed to obtain DSFs. An outlier analysis method based on DSF values is used to detect the damage. The technique is evaluated using the vertical vibration data of the two bridges subjected to three controlled amounts of known damage on the steel girders. In the second technique, ARX models and sensor clustering technique is used to obtain prediction errors in healthy and damaged conditions of the bridges. DSF is defined as the ratio of the standard deviations of the prediction errors. The proposed technique is evaluated using the triaxial vibration data of the two bridges. This study also presents finite element analysis of the I-40 westbound bridge over 4th Avenue to obtain simulated vibration data for different damage levels and locations. The simulated data are then used in the ARX models and sensor clustering damage identification technique to investigate the effects of damage location and extent, efficacy of each triaxial vibration, and effect of noise on the vibration-based damage identification techniques.

Identifying the possible safety problems in the approximately 600,000 bridges across the U.S. is generally accomplished through labor-intensive, visual inspections. Wireless monitoring technology seeks to improve current practices by supplementing the visual inspections with real-time evaluation of bridges. To be economically feasible, wireless sensor networks should be able to (a) operate independent of the power grid, and (b) achieve a service life of at least ten years. Novel energy harvesting approaches have been investigated to fulfill these two criteria. In particular, the feasibility of a vibration energy harvester as a long-term power source was assessed. The goal of the research was to process measured acceleration data and analyze the vibrational response of typical highway bridges under truck loads. The effects of ambient temperature, truck traffic patterns, and harvester position on the power content of the vibrations were explored, as well as the effects of linear and nonlinear harvesters. This thesis presents the results of evaluating the response of five steel bridges in Texas and Oregon for energy harvesting applications.

Book excerpt: In preparation for a large rehabilitation project on the Anthony Wayne Bridge (AWB), the Ohio Department of Transportation has expressed interest in evaluating monitoring and protection strategies which may extend the life of the AWB. This study was proposed and performed in line with this goal. Corrosion of the main cable was identified as the driving mechanism for the aging of suspension bridges. Experiments were performed in order to determine whether or not the existing acoustic monitoring system on the AWB could be used to readily identify active corrosion. Results from laboratory testing show that use of acoustic emission to detect corrosion is possible and promising; however, field experiments indicate that additional tests are needed to determine the practicality of identifying corrosion in the field. The upcoming bridge closure will provide a great opportunity for researchers to more closely examine this possibility. In addition, this report includes literature investigation into other state-of-the-art corrosion monitoring and protection strategies including an internal sensor array, the magnetic main flux method for wire inspection, and cable dehumidification.
