Results suggest that students who are motivated toward succeeding and believe that educational achievement will yield social, economic, and personal gain later in life, perform at higher levels in comparison to students who are motivated to avoid failure, and are skeptical about the benefits of education. In addition, results indicated that African American students are more trusting of White culture in an educational setting than they are of White culture in a work setting. Significant differences are discussed for gender and between students attending HBCU's and PWI's.

Book excerpt: " The test score gap between blacks and whites—on vocabulary, reading, and math tests, as well as on tests that claim to measure scholastic aptitude and intelligence--is large enough to have far-reaching social and economic consequences. In their introduction to this book, Christopher Jencks and Meredith Phillips argue that eliminating the disparity would dramatically reduce economic and educational inequality between blacks and whites. Indeed, they think that closing the gap would do more to promote racial equality than any other strategy now under serious discussion. The book offers a comprehensive look at the factors that contribute to the test score gap and discusses options for substantially reducing it. Although significant attempts have been made over the past three decades to shrink the test score gap, including increased funding for predominantly black schools, desegregation of southern schools, and programs to alleviate poverty, the median black American still scores below 75 percent of American whites on most standardized tests. The book brings together recent evidence on some of the most controversial and puzzling aspects of the test score debate, including the role of test bias, heredity, and family background. It also looks at how and why the gap has changed over the past generation, reviews the educational, psychological, and cultural explanations for the gap, and analyzes its educational and economic consequences. The authors demonstrate that traditional explanations account for only a small part of the black-white test score gap. They argue that this is partly because traditional explanations have put too much emphasis on racial disparities in economic resources, both in homes and in schools, and on demographic factors like family structure. They say that successful theories will put more emphasis on psychological and cultural factors, such as the way black and white parents teach their children to deal with things they do not know or understand, and the way black and white children respond to the same classroom experiences. Finally, they call for large-scale experiments to determine the effects of schools' racial mix, class size, ability grouping, and other policies. In addition to the editors, the contributors include Claude Steele, Ronald Ferguson, William G. Bowen, Philip Cook, and William Julius Wilson. "

Book excerpt: Enrollment and graduation from college rates among African Americans have increased in recent years resulting in a progressive narrowing of the college completion gap between Blacks and Whites (Ross et al., 2012, U.S. Department of Education, 2009). However, Blacks still have high rates of poor academic outcomes (Attewell & Lavin, 2007). For instance, college drop-out rates remain disproportionately high despite an increase in enrollment rates (Carpenter & Ramirez,2007).Historically, there has been a significant shortage of research on factors affecting academic performance among Blacks. Therefore, there is a need to examine the role of less apparent intrapsychic and external factors impacting academic achievement among African Americans. Employing Helms' People of Color (POC) Racial Identity model, this study will address the following question: Are African American college students with a fully developed racial identity, sense of cultural fit and the intrinsic motivation to succeed more likely to achieve academic success? Academic success will be operationalized as the student's competence and adjustment to college. It is hypothesized that a positive racial identity (Integrative awareness status), high levels of cultural fit, and intrinsic motivation will positively predict academic success (GPA and adjustment to the college environment).Data will be solicited from 150 Black college students from the Psychology department subject pool (SONA) using a self-administered anonymous online questionnaire. An anonymous questionnaire consisting of the People of Color Racial Identity Attitude scale (POCRIAS: Helms, 1995), Academic Motivation Scale (Cokley, 2001), Cultural Congruity scale (CCS) (Constantine & Watt, 2002), University Environment scale (UES) (Castellanos et al., 2016) and a demographic data sheet will be used. All the measures have demonstrated adequate reliability with Cronbach alpha's scores ranging from .70 to .95, and good predictive and construct validity estimates among African American samples (Kohatsu et al., 2011; Scottham et al.,).Employing hierarchical regression analyses, the results are expected to demonstrate that the POCRIAS, Cultural Congruence Scale, and Academic Motivation Scale will significantly predict academic success (GPA and UES scores) among Black students.
