Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, language: English, abstract: ABSTRACT With US President's visit, Planning Commission has given green signal to FDI in multi brand retailing. Only 51 per cent FDI in single-brand retail is permitted in India. Multi brand retailers were only allowed to operate wholesale outlets. The paper will cover how FDI in retail sector can be introduced, benefits of allowing FDI, how to have control over the global players, and how local retailers can survive in spite of the big players. The retail industry in India is of late often being hailed as one of the sunrise sectors in the economy. Emergence of organized retail sector in India has more to do with increasing purchasing power of buyers and modern supply and logistic management techniques. With a contribution of 14% to the national GDP and employing 7% of the total workforce (only agriculture employs more) in the country, the retail industry is definitely one of the pillars of the Indian economy. Keywords: Foreign Direct Investment, organized retail sector, single-brand retail, globalization, foreign retailers, Ministry of Commerce, Industrial policy and promotion, FDI's issues and prospects. *********

Book excerpt: This volume examines the opportunities and challenges in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and trade, particularly service trade, for developing and emerging economies in a globalised world. Using comprehensive case studies from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries, it explores various channels through which trade and FDI affect the process of economic growth and development. In particular, it determines growth trajectories impelled by service trade (such as telecommunications, transport, finance and distribution), where developing countries are playing an increasingly significant role. It also discusses value chains and production networks in the backdrop of the financial crisis of 2008. Combining theoretical and empirical tools, rigorous methodology and latest data, this work will serve as an important resource for formulation of international trade and economic policies in developing countries. It will be of special interest to students, researchers and policy makers dealing with international trade and FDI, and those in economics, commerce, business & management and political science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new institutional economics has been one of the most influential schools of thought to emerge in the past quarter century. Taking its roots in the transaction cost theory of the firm as an economic organization rather than purely a production function, it has been developed further by scholars such as Oliver Williamson, Douglas North and their followers, leading to the rich and growing field of the new institutional economics. This branch of economics stresses the importance of institutions in the functioning of free markets, which include elaborately defined and effectively enforced property rights in the presence of transaction costs, large corporate organizations with agency and hierarchical controls, formal contracts, bankruptcy laws, and regulatory institutions. In this timely volume, Murali Patibandla applies some of the precepts of the new institutional economics to India - one of the world's most promising economies.

Book excerpt: Economics is a social science concerned mainly with description and analysis of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Beyond the various theories and models, however, economics has close relationship with day to day life. This book reviews the economic journey of India over the last seventy years, and seeks to stimulate the readers’ thinking on some major issues and potentialities facing the Indian economy. Five main themes flow through the book – India’s potential to be the World’s third largest economic power by 2030, the challenges of socio-economic equity that India faces, the several opportunities that India has in that journey, the critical role of governance, leadership, management and administration, and the importance of mindset changes to power India’s futureeconomic growth. A special focus is laid on the role of government policies and projects in socio-economic development. The book sensitises the readers, including college students in general, and students of economics in particular, to the happenings around us which have significant economic import. The book makes all through its seventy chapters several suggestions to power India’s growth as a global economic superpower, on a plank of socioeconomic equity. This book serves as an expansive thought primer and focussed execution guide for an economically independent and resurgent India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized retail in India is a decade or so old phenomenon. During the last ten or twelve years, it has progressed well. At the same time, it is facing many problems, challenges, difficulties some are general and others are India specific. The objective of this book is to analyze these problems and discuss future prospects of this sector in India. In addition to problems and prospects, some other important related aspects of organized retailing in India such as politics and organized retail, use of latest technology in organized retail, the impact of organized retail on the Indian economy and unorganized sector, foreign direct investment in organized retail, job and career opportunities in organized retail in India are also included in this work. Broadly, there are six categories of chapters. In the first political and technical category come two chapters that deal with some important and hitherto untouched aspects of organized retail in India such as politics and technology. In the second category are seven chapters on the growth of modern and organized retail in India, its changing faces, its impact on the Indian economy. The third category consists of two chapters that deal with the impact of organized retail on unorganized retail in India. The fourth category also has two chapters on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the organized retail sector in India. Career and job opportunities are the theme of the next two chapters that come under the fifth category. In the sixth and last category are five chapters that explain problems and challenges faced by the organized retail and future prospects of this sector in India. Retailing or retail management is now found a place in the syllabi of MBA programs. Many universities and colleges have initiated new courses in retailing at different levels. Some have started separate and specialized MBA in Retail Management. Pass outs of these programs and courses are providing manpower and human resources to upcoming organized retail outlets like malls, hypermarkets, stores, etc. In other words, the organized retail sector is providing new job and career opportunities to young people. Retailing is emerging a useful and contemporary discipline in Commerce and Management faculties. But one finds a very limited number of books on the organized retail sector in India. The present compendium endeavors to fill this gap. It is hoped that this book will be very useful to the corporate sector involved in the emerging organized retail industry; executives, managers and employees of malls and stores; faculty of educational institutions involved in teaching and students of this new discipline.

Book excerpt: The changes following more than two decades of economic reforms and globalization of the Indian economy – at state, corporate sector, and consumer level – raise interesting questions on the ways in which the stakeholders will continue to engage on the world stage, politically, socially and economically. One key feature of global trade over this period has been the growing importance of not only product standards but, importantly, labor, environmental, food safety and social standards. Being essentially a non-tariff barrier, standards have often become critical to market access and essential to sustained competitiveness. This has a clear impact on the manner in which both global and Indian business is conducted now and in the future. It also underlines the need for a new area of enquiry that addresses the following questions: How are the Indian public and private actors – the state, domestic firms, local consumers and society – influencing and being influenced by such standards? Do standards really matter in an overwhelmingly informal production sphere, with consumers deeply segmented on the basis of a highly skewed distribution of income and with the rural population becoming further marginalized? We have limited knowledge about the challenges faced and strategies pursued by these key domestic actors, both public and private. How have they been able to drive these processes and what are their implications for larger concerns with inequalities and the conditions of the poor? How does the omnipresent informality influence compliance, encourage multiple standards and affect the chances of addressing institutional dysfunctionality? What role does regulation play? These are some of the issues dealt with in the book, which has chapters focusing on aspects of specific sectors such as microfinance, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, tea trading, the role of the state and changing consumer influence. We have limited knowledge about the challenges faced and strategies pursued by these key domestic actors, both public and private. How have been they able to drive these processes and what are the consequences of these changes for the Indian economy, other emergent economies and for the rest of the developing world? In particular, what are their implications for the wider Indian society, especially on concerns with informality, inequalities and the conditions of the poor? How does informality in its omnipresent form influence compliance, encourage multiple standards and chances of addressing institutional dysfunctionality? What role does regulation play? These are some of the issues dealt within the book wherein chapters focus on aspects of specific sectors, trading, role of the state and changing influence of the consumer.
