Download or read book Pounamu Pounamu written by Witi Ihimaera and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pounamu Pounamu is classic Ihimaera and also classic New Zealand literature. First published in 1972, it was his first book, which as he says in his new introduction 'fulfilled a childhood vow: to write about Maori using his own self and home place'. The vivid stories in this collection not only explore but also celebrate what it is to be a New Zealander, and they do so from a lively Maori perspective. The seeds of Ihimaera's later works were first sown in this ground-breaking collection: The Whale Rider in his story 'The Whale'; The Rope of Man in 'Tangi'; and the character of Simeon from Bulibasha, King of the Gypsies in 'One Summer Morning'. The book also covers the themes of aroha (love), whanaungatanga (kinship) and manaakitanga (supporting each other), which are so integral to Ihimaera's work.

Download or read book Band of Angels written by Witi Ihimaera and published by Robson Books Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'As soon as he saw it, Miro Mananui knew what it was. An owl, its cryptic flaring with the dawn.' Who has the owl come for? Whose name has it cried out to Miro Mananui, the Matua of the village of Waituhi? In 'Band of Angels', mane lives and stories intersect. The passionate Mattie Jones bears a horrifying secret; Tama Mananui makes the most of an arranged marriage with a woman 20 years older; Nani Paora holds the key to the past and a history filled with bloodshed; and his grandson Pene may well be the key to the future. Pita Mahana's attempts to reinstate the past set in train events that lead to the return of the owl for its victims. Fuelled by passion, politics, psychic power and the search for truth, Band of Angels is another compelling novel from the master story teller Witi Ihimaera.

Book Synopsis The Magic Jaw Bone by : Hartwell James
Download or read book The Magic Jaw Bone written by Hartwell James and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction. It is very interesting to read stories that have been handed down by former dwellers on the earth, and so learn how they thought, felt and acted, for in many instances the characters and exploits of the legendary beings they describe are connected with ancient religious beliefs and systems. The stories in this book are of Maoris, pronounced very much like Mow-rees, a race of tall, brown-skinned men, very fierce and warlike in disposition. They had no books, but they did have, and have still, a great many strange and beautiful fairy tales which the chiefs and professional story-tellers used to relate to the people in their soft and musical language, long before they had even heard of white men. As you read these stories you will see how the Maoris believed in a Fire-god, and in a dark world below this one, where people went after they died. You will notice, too, that they thought the earth was a big flat piece of land, that the sun rose above it every day and dipped below it at night, and that the stars were not merely little glittering things, but vast worlds, often far greater than their own. In the decorations for the full-page pictures in this book the artist has reproduced various objects connected with ancient Maori life. There is Tané, the God of light, a shark-toothed sword, another sword with the hilt nearly at a right angle with the blade, a feather headdress resembling a Roman helmet, a shield, a quiver, a war-club, two forms of spears, and a hat much like those worn by the Chinese. In the large initials throughout the book the textures of different Maori fabrics are shown in combination with implements and idols.
