Book excerpt: William Bartram's Travels, published in 1791, remains a seminal book for understanding the American South, its flora, fauna, and people. Now, acclaimed poet and novelist Philip Lee Williams, who has known Bartram's work almost since childhood, has written what will surely be acclaimed as one of the finest long poems ever to come out of the South. The Flower Seeker is an epic poem that follows the young William Bartram on his journey in the American South and during his old age in his father's gardens. It is truly a southern Odyssey, using techniques of fiction and poetry to get deeply inside one of the most remarkable men ever to strap on a pair of boots in America. Written in twenty-four cantos, the book digs deep into the mind and heart of Bartram, who was also an acclaimed visual artist and naturalist. The Flower Seeker begins with an unusual but regular stanzaic form but quickly changes as Bartram changes during his four-year ride on horseback around the South. Following in the shadows of other epic poems such as Ezra Pound's Cantos, Paterson of William Carlos Williams, or The Maximus Poems by Charles Olson, The Flower Seeker is a dazzling compendium of poetic devices and approaches. In it, Williams uses the Travels as the basis for an expanding and imaginary universe that describes Bartram's interior world as much as the one he rode through. Long, complex, and yet immensely readable, The Flower Seeker packs an intellectual and emotional punch like few other long poems in the American tradition. It is surely destined to become an enduring classic of Southern and even American literature. Special Edition is signed/numbered and includes four color art by Philip Juras and a CD of poetry (read by the author) and his original music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What Captures the Mind" is my 75th book of poetry and 98th book of various genre. There are one (100) classical poems of love and romance, wit and wisdom, humor and comedy, advice and dissent, patriotism, social criticism, inspiration, history, and mystery. Forty-five (45) of my poems have been published by the prestigious Society of Classical Poets of which I am a member. You may read them all by going to their website, clicking on the Member button, clicking on my name in blue and it will take you there. An additional twenty (20) were published under the Ukraine invasion invitation for poetry, five (5) for a St. Patrick's Day invitation and three (3) more are scheduled for publication making a total of sixty-four (64) poems. With this edition, my total poetry count is now 4,910. That may seem prolific, and you may be correct; however, Edgar A. Guest published over 11,000 poems in the English language, most of them daily in a column with the Detroit Free Press. In previous volumes I asserted that I am the equivalent of a "people's poet," much like Edgar Alan Poe, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and Edgar A. Guest. That is because my average poem does not use stilted phrases and obscure words, but leans on those words and phrases used by the masses; because my subjects often are common place; and because my sensitivities can relate to the average individual. You will find many poems, however, that approach the esoteric, use obscure phraseology or words, and appeal only to the higher class of intellectual. I pride myself on being able to perform at every level of society with challenging and interesting poetry for them. When you read my detailed biography at the end, you will understand how I am able to operate either as a farmer or janitor and then as an elite politician, stateman, and university professor. Personally, I am an Award-Winning Singer and retired LTC, US Army, Military Intelligence and Russian Foreign Area Officer. I was the first US Foreign Commercial Officer in the Russian Far East and IBM Regional Manager in the same location. As one of the most educated men in America with 200 post-graduate hours and 3 Master's Degrees. I make no apologies for my logic and views on any subject you wish to name unless it is esoteric science.

Book excerpt: For this companion to her New York Times best-selling collection A Family of Poems, Caroline Kennedy has hand-selected more than a hundred of her favorite poems that lend themselves to memorization. Some are joyful. Some are sad. Some are funny and lighthearted. Many offer layers of meaning that reveal themselves only after the poem has been studied so closely as to be learned by heart. In issuing the challenge to memorize great poetry, Caroline Kennedy invites us to a deeply enriching experience. For as she reminds us, “If we learn poems by heart, not only do we have their wisdom to draw on, we also gain confidence, knowledge and understanding that no one can take away.” Illustrated with gorgeous, original watercolor paintings by award-winning artist Jon J Muth , this is truly a book for all ages, and one that families will share again and again. Caroline’s thoughtful introductions shed light on the many ways we can appreciate poetry, and the special tradition of memorizing and reciting poetry that she celebrates within her own family.
