It’s full of ups and downs, high and low points. Using the lyrics of an old gospel song by Linda Ronstadt, “Life is like a mountain railway with an engineer that’s brave. We must make this run successful from the cradle to the grave,” one of the greatest challenges we all face to navigate life’s journey is developing healthy, godly relationships. One of our greatest failures in developing healthy relationships is well described by a story sharer in this book. She compares a bad or toxic relationship with the plight of sin. “Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.” Such can be said about a bad or toxic relationship. In Dr. McGruder’s book Cutting Your Losses from a Bad or Toxic Relationship, he warns those who discover themselves in such a relationship and fail to heed warnings and escape from harm’s way. Remaining in such a relationship can waste a significant portion of your life’s journey, and the result can tally up to emotional, mental, psychological, and spiritual gross costs. However, this book will provide insight on how to survive and thrive it all!

Book excerpt: Few of us have been spared the agonies of intimate relationships. They come in many shapes: loving a man or a woman who will not commit to us, being heartbroken when we're abandoned by a lover, engaging in Sisyphean internet searches, coming back lonely from bars, parties, or blind dates, feeling bored in a relationship that is so much less than we had envisaged - these are only some of the ways in which the search for love is a difficult and often painful experience. Despite the widespread and almost collective character of these experiences, our culture insists they are the result of faulty or insufficiently mature psyches. For many, the Freudian idea that the family designs the pattern of an individual's erotic career has been the main explanation for why and how we fail to find or sustain love. Psychoanalysis and popular psychology have succeeded spectacularly in convincing us that individuals bear responsibility for the misery of their romantic and erotic lives. The purpose of this book is to change our way of thinking about what is wrong in modern relationships. The problem is not dysfunctional childhoods or insufficiently self-aware psyches, but rather the institutional forces shaping how we love. The argument of this book is that the modern romantic experience is shaped by a fundamental transformation in the ecology and architecture of romantic choice. The samples from which men and women choose a partner, the modes of evaluating prospective partners, the very importance of choice and autonomy and what people imagine to be the spectrum of their choices: all these aspects of choice have transformed the very core of the will, how we want a partner, the sense of worth bestowed by relationships, and the organization of desire. This book does to love what Marx did to commodities: it shows that it is shaped by social relations and institutions and that it circulates in a marketplace of unequal actors.

Book excerpt: Many sincere, Bible-believing Christians are Calvinists only by default. Thinking that the only choice is between Calvinism (with its presumed doctrine of eternal security) and Arminianism (with its teaching that salvation can be lost), and confident of Christ's promise to keep eternally those who believe in Him, they therefore consider themselves to be Calvinists. It takes only a few simple questions to discover that most Christians are largely unaware of what John Calvin and his early followers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries actually believed and practiced. Nor do they fully understand what most of today's leading Calvinists believe. Although there are disputed variations of the Calvinist doctrine, among its chief proponents (whom we quote extensively in context) there is general agreement on certain core beliefs. Many evangelicals who think they are Calvinists will be surprised to learn of Calvin's belief in salvation through infant baptism and of his grossly un-Christian behavior, at times, as the "Protestant Pope" of Geneva, Switzerland. Most shocking of all, however, is Calvinism's misrepresentation of God, who "is love." It is our prayer that this volume will enable readers to examine more carefully the vital issues involved and to follow God's holy Word--not man's teachings. "The first edition of this book was greeted by fervent opposition and criticism from Calvinists. In this enlarged and revised edition I have endeavored to respond to the critics." --Dave Hunt

Book excerpt: In this innovative and revealing study of midcentury American sex and culture, Amanda Littauer traces the origins of the "sexual revolution" of the 1960s. She argues that sexual liberation was much more than a reaction to 1950s repression because it largely involved the mainstreaming of a counterculture already on the rise among girls and young women decades earlier. From World War II–era "victory girls" to teen lesbians in the 1940s and 1950s, these nonconforming women and girls navigated and resisted intense social and interpersonal pressures to fit existing mores, using the upheavals of the era to pursue new sexual freedoms. Building on a new generation of research on postwar society, Littauer tells the history of diverse young women who stood at the center of major cultural change and helped transform a society bound by conservative sexual morality into one more open to individualism, plurality, and pleasure in modern sexual life.

Book excerpt: Marriage is an honorable and sacred covenant relationship in which every individual should want to be. God's foundation for marriage is intended to be a permanent union. In this present world, permanency is overruled by constant changes in law, morals, fashion, and particularly hearts and minds. Individuals who want only to be married become only individuals who want to be on their own or with someone else. Marriages intended to be built on the foundation of love become marriages of trial-by-error tactics. What has gone wrong? Why has a relationship intended by God to be good been made evil? What has brought an end to the love and the joyful life between men and women? The problem is you and me; we have forgotten our divine origin and debased our behaviors to the level of animals or lower. We no longer follow divine will and laws. We have, with our own hands, put a knife into the cord that binds human beings together in love; as a result, the fabric of moral decency and spiritual inclination has fallen apart. Men and women must rediscover their individual relationship with God and God's role in their relationship with each other. Re-discover that your marriage and love relationship is intended to be the most precious and enjoyable union to ever exist on earth. Obedience, submission, and open communication shine brightly in a union founded on real love. This book will open your eyes to the splendor and beauty of marriage by teaching how to build a strong foundation, and how to restore love and confidence in that relationship. Discover real treasure in the advice to be found in How to Build a Stimulating and Everlasting Love in Relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the name Christian made its first appearance, the meaning of the word has gone through many name changes. Today there are as many meanings of Christian as there are denominations. And disturbingly, most of them bear a denominational, not a biblical imprint. Brian Byrne has put aside his denominational spectacles and has taken a long hard look at what the scriptures have to say about the identity, life, works, and future of a Christian. And the results will surprise you. Brian Byrne has found that the life of every Christian involves the separation of the things that belong to God from the things of the evil one. And integral in that separation is the question, "To whom do Christians give their allegiance?" He then explores the life, character, works, and accomplishments of the One whose name Christians bear, our Lord Jesus Christ. Included in his study is the essential element in Christian's relationship with the Lord. It is by faith. He has found that one of the great "missings" in the lives of Christians is the presence and work of the Spirit. Brian has explored this subject in considerable depth. He has followed this study with a study of Christian as disciple, exploring seven elements in the life of a disciple, and each one bears the imprint of the Spirit. The family of God to whom all Christians belong has a special place in Brian's study. He treats this special subject not as doctrine, but as practical reality, as the environment in which Christians are to express their faith. Brian explores the surprising glory for the Christian that is beyond this life. He concludes the book with details of a number of important words that Christians need to know and to apply. Christian: Not of This World is an essential resource for everyone who bears the name Christian and for those who teach the principles of our faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Understanding our role in marriage is essential to our happiness in marriage.” Many times we as wives are so ambitious to scale to the height of the universe and accomplish mighty feats that we fail to realize our greatest achievements will come in simple obedience to our Lord’s words. In marriage, this starts with an understanding of our role. This role does not come naturally for women as some claim. The Lord says it must be taught (Titus 2:3-5). Could it be that simple lack of understanding concerning the role of the wife is a significant factor in the divorce rate? I think so. In The Biblical Role of the Wife, I will share with you some of my own mistakes and what I learned about my role as a wife. Ignorance is certainly not bliss. When I got married, I thought I knew my role. I was wrong! I only knew what I saw demonstrated around me and assumed that this was how I also must behave. It never occurred to me that some of the fighting and upheaval I was experiencing in my marriage, such as feeling torn between my husband and my family, was simply a direct result of my lack of understanding concerning my role. Needless to say, I began to learn that there was a better way—God’s way. As I learned God’s way, I was quite surprised when I noticed how much more peace and happiness I experienced because I started putting into practice the truths that I am about to share with you.
