The focus is on the nontraditional factors of political sentiments, strategic drivers and the ‘Do-it-yourself’ (DIY) methodology. Three themes have become the book’s core narrative: the Malays-Then and Now; Malaysia’s Cooperation with its ASEAN Neighbours and Malaysia’s attempt at balancing its relations with the world. All the ideas are brought together in a final part of the book. In the book, the country’s responses to the changing strategic environment and the different strategic drivers that have impacted on our value-system and influenced our diplomatic actions over the years have been analysed and evaluated.

Book Synopsis Colonial Frames, Nationalist Histories by : Mrinalini Rajagopalan
Download or read book Colonial Frames, Nationalist Histories written by Mrinalini Rajagopalan and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common thread throughout the essays in this volume is a focus on new loci of power that emerge either in collision with colonial power structures, or in collaboration with or those that emerge in the wake of decolonization. While the authors recognize the presence of a larger structure of colonial hegemony, they also investigate those centers of power that emerge in the interstices of crevices of colonial power. Interdisciplinary and theoretically innovative, this book offers a global perspective on colonial and national landscapes, rewrites the master creator narrative, examines national landscapes as sites of contestation and views the globalization of processes such as archaeology beyond the boundaries of the national.

Book Synopsis The Malay Handloom Weavers by : Maznah Mohamad
Download or read book The Malay Handloom Weavers written by Maznah Mohamad and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1996 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malay society of the past has usually been characterized by the presence of the peasantry, a pre-modern class of producers, tied to the land and beholden to a feudalistic or feudal-like ruling structure. In contrast, this book explores the diversity which in fact colours the economic history of the Malays. The subject of this book is a relatively unknown class of people, the handloom weavers, who played a decisive role in the economies of the eastern Malay states of Terengganu, Kelantan, and Pahang. Today, the products of these handloom weavers, the beautiful hand-woven sarongs and cloths, grace the most elegant and auspicious of occasions. What is the story behind the vicissitudes, often brutal, of textile production in the early or proto-industrial phases of the Malay economy? Why was the handloom industry, at its height, halted from realizing its full potential of trans-forming into a full-fledged industrial manufacture? What exactly is the putting-out system of production and how did men and women actualize their roles in such production regimes? Why did the putting-out system endure? In answering such questions this book explores the origins of the Malay handloom industry, its technology, its people, and its turbulent relationship with the ambitions of both the colonial and modern nation-states.

Book Synopsis Reclaiming Adat by : Gaik Cheng Khoo
Download or read book Reclaiming Adat written by Gaik Cheng Khoo and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, the animist and Hindu traces in adat, or Malay custom, became contentious for resurgent Islam in Malaysia. Reclaiming Adat focuses on the filmmakers, intellectuals, and writers who reclaimed adat to counter the homogenizing aspects of both Islamic discourse and globalization in this period. They practised their project of recuperation with an emphasis on sexuality and a return to archaic forms such as magic and traditional healing. Using close textual readings of literature and film, Khoo Gaik Cheng reveals the tensions between gender, modernity, and nation. Khoo weaves a wealth of cultural theory into a rare analysis of Malay cinema and the work of new Malaysian anglophone writers. Reclaiming Adat makes an essential contribution to our knowledge of the complexities embedded in modern Malaysian culture, politics, and identity.

Langkah Sitah semakin lebar.

Book Synopsis The Wayang at Eight Milestone by : Gregory Nalpon
Download or read book The Wayang at Eight Milestone written by Gregory Nalpon and published by Epigram Books. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long overdue collection gathers together sixteen of Gregory Nalpon’s short stories, eleven of his essays, and a selection of his sketches of life in coffee shops, hawker stalls and samshu shops. Through his writing, Nalpon poignantly records a lost, rich world: the colourful, exciting and sometimes perilous Singapore of half a century ago. With this collection, a vital Singaporean voice is finally recovered. Nalpon’s inspired blend of close observation, legend, local superstition and peculiarly eclectic reading results in some of the most imaginative and exciting writing produced in Singapore during the 1960s and 1970s, including authentic descriptions of indigenous culture and working-class men and women rarely found in Singaporean writing of the period.

Book Synopsis The Makassar Annals by : William Cummings
Download or read book The Makassar Annals written by William Cummings and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1630s, a series of annalists at the main courts of Makassar began keeping records with dated entries that recorded a wide variety of specific historical information about a wide variety of topics, including the births and deaths of notable individuals, the actions of rulers, the spread of Islam, trade and diplomacy, the built environment, ritual activity, warfare, internal political struggles, social and kinship relations, eclipses and comets, and more. These Lontaraq bilang were a clear departure in form and function from the genealogically-structured chronicles being composed about the ruling families of Gowa and Talloq in the same era. By the end of 1751, nearly 2400 entries had been completed. These records are a rich lode of information for scholars interested in virtually any aspect of life in premodern Makassar, and are a rare and precious resource for scholars of Southeast Asia. This is the first English translation and annotation of the annals.
