Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constant strain amplitude fatigue deformation at room temperature has been studied in single crystals of copper with and without a dispersion of Al2O3 particles. The size, shape and distribution of the alumina particles were varied by internally oxidizing copper-aluminium single crystals by two different methods. Although the saturation stress level does not seem to be affected by the presence of the dispersed phase, the fatigue hardening and the resulting dislocation structure are significantly different. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 781 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1979 the first InternationalSymposium on Low CycleFatigue and Elasto-Plastic Behaviour of Materials was held in Stuttgart, FRG. Since then research in low cycle fatigue has proceeded rapidly. The vital interest of engineers and researchers in communicating the rapid advances in the ongoing research in low cycle fatigue has encouraged me to initiate again the Second International Conference which was held in Munich, FRG, 7-11 September 1987. Failure in low cycle fatigue represents a serious problem in the design and opera tion of highly stressed structures. Under complex loading and environmental cir cumstances, especially for high temperature services, reliable life prediction can not be expected without detailed consideration of the failure mechanism and with out extensive use of mechanistic approaches. The purpose of this conference was to provide a forum to discuss the advances in recent research in the field of low cycle fatigue. The conference was intended to help to further bridge the gap between those who are involved in basic research, and the engineers who have to perform the design of highly stressed structural components.
Book Synopsis Differences in Fatigue Behavior of Single Copper Crystals and Polycrystalline Copper at Elevated Temperatures by : W. A. Wood
Download or read book Differences in Fatigue Behavior of Single Copper Crystals and Polycrystalline Copper at Elevated Temperatures written by W. A. Wood and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparison is made of the microstructural changes occurring in annealed polycrystalline copper and in single copper-crystals when subjected similarly to fatigue deformation by alternating torsion at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 400C. The amplitudes of cyclic strain in each case were purposely chosen to be typical of those which at room temperature produce fatigue damage by the concentrating of slip in bands which finally turn into slip-zone microcracks. It is shown that this slip concentration in polycrystalline copper no longer occurs as the test temperature is raised and that fatigue damage instead concentrates at grain boundaries. Also the slip concentration ceases in single-crystal copper as the test temperature is raised but in this case, where there are no grain boundaries, the metal recrystallizes and becomes polycrystalline before fracture. It is shown further that whereas the fatigue life of polycrystalline copper decreases with increasing temperature that of the single-crystal copper remains unaltered. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second International Symposium on Defects, Fracture and Fatigue took place at Mont Gabriel, Quebec, Canada, May 30 to June 5, 1982, and was organized by the Mechanical Engineering Department of McGill University and Institute of Fracture and Solid Mechanics, Lehigh University. The Co-Chairmen of the Sympo sium were Professor G.C. Sih of Lehigh University and Professor J.W. Provan of McGill University. Among those who served on the Organizing Committee were G.C. Sih (Co-Chairman), J.W. Provan (Co-Chairman), H. Mughrabi, H. Zorski, R. Bullough, M. Matczynski, G. Barenblatt and G. Caglioti. As a result of the interest expressed at the First Symposium that was held in October 1980, in Po land, the need for a follow-up meeting to further explore the phenomena of mate rial damage became apparent. Among the areas considered were dislocations, per sistent-slip-bands, void creation, microcracking, microstructure effects, micro/ macro fracture mechanics, ductile fracture criteria, fatigue crack initiation and propagation, stress and failure analysis, deterministic and statistical crack models, and fracture control. This wide spectrum of topics attracted researchers and engineers in solid state physics, continuum mechanics, applied mathematics, metallurgy and fracture mechanics from many different countries. This spectrum is also indicative of the interdisciplinary character of material damage that must be addressed at the atomic, microscopic and macroscopic scale level.
