Book excerpt: Fatigue damage accumulation and failure modes of several unidirectional and angle-ply SCS-6 fiber-reinforced titanium matrix composites are reviewed. The fatigue damage characteristics of the notched and unnotched composites were classified using several schematic diagrams based upon the constituent's properties and loading conditions. Quantitative relationships between the microstructural damage and stiffness reduction were also established. A shear-lag model incorporating a damage function (which involved the cracking density and length, fiber/matrix frictional stress, and debonding length) was also used to predict residual stiffness of the composites.

Book excerpt: The fatigue response of a cross-ply [0/90]2S titanium (Ti-15-3) matrix composite reinforced with silicon carbide fibers (SCS-6) was investigated at 427°C. Tension-tension (tensile mean stress) and tension-compression (zero mean stress) loadings were applied. For the same stress range, tension-tension loading caused much lower fatigue lives and greater strain ratchetting than those under tension-compression loading. Despite the longer fatigue lives under tension-compression loading, additional plasticity sites and fatigue damage mechanisms were observed. Fatigue damage mechanisms could be classified into two distinct regimes, independent of mean load, fiber-dominated (fibers fracture prior to matrix cracking) at high-stresses and low-cyclic lives, and matrix dominated (matrix fatigue cracks prior to fiber fracture) at longer lives. Comparisons of the 427°C results are made with previously reported results at room temperature. Deformation mechanisms and fatigue lives were influenced by the testing temperature.

Book excerpt: This report details studies carried out to identify the high temperature fatigue crack growth damage mechanisms in fiber-reinforced titanium metal matrix composites. The report consists of eight separate sections. In the first section, the fatigue and fatigue crack growth characteristics in neat laminates made of Timetal 21S were studied in relation to both temperature and loading frequency effects. The second section deals with the evolution of the thermal residual stresses in the composite when cooling from consolidation temperature or subjecting the composite to thermal cycles. A new mechanical simulation method capable of measuring the induced residual stress on real time basis has been developed in this study. The third section extends this issue to the time-dependent internal stress and strain states of MMCs under the thermomechanical loading conditions. Here, a new micromechanical model employing the four-phase concentric cylinder configuration has been proposed. Based on this model, the time-dependent behavior of continuous fiber reinforced metal matrix composites. It has been evaluated. These results are presented in the fourth section. The fifth, sixth and seventh sections of this report describe the influence of temperature and loading frequency on the crack growth process and suggest a fatigue-creep interactive mechanism acting at the crack tip during high temperature loadings. The last section of the report deals with the determination of the stress evolution in bridging fibers during the fatigue crack growth in SM 1240/Timetal-21S composite using the finite element method. Several parameters affecting this evolution were considered; namely, the process-induced residual stress, the creep characteristics of the matrix layer surrounding the fiber, the test temperature and the loading frequency.

Book excerpt: Creep-rupture and fatigue tests were conducted to identify the failure modes and degradation mechanisms of a [0/90] carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composite at 550 and 650°C. When compared on a maximum stress versus time to failure basis at a given temperature, fatigue testing yielded longer lives than creep-rupture testing. Tests conducted at 550°C had longer lives than 650°C tests. The rate of modulus degradation was similar for both temperatures and loading modes. Examination of tested specimens revealed that oxidation of the carbon fibers was the dominant damage mechanism for C/SiC at these temperatures and test conditions. The oxidation damage occurred globally within the surface of the specimen gage section, and locally in the interior of the composite, around pre-existing matrix cracks and pores. The results of this study indicate that, under the test conditions employed here, specimen life is governed by a combination of time at temperature and time-averaged stress and is not cycle dependent.

Book excerpt: The bridging fatigue crack growth damage mechanisms in a unidirectional SiC/Ti MMC include matrix cracking, fiber/matrix interface debonding and sliding along bridging fibers and fracture of these fibers. The basic components of these mechanisms are examined in this program. The evolution features of residual stresses indicated that stress relaxation occurred in the Ti matrix phase of the composite following post-fabrication cool down to 600 00. Parametric study of the SiC fiber coating materials showed that the effective residual stress component has an inverse relationship with the thickness of the fiber reaction zone. The debonding shear strength of the composite is determined by the localized shear stress distribution along the fiber/matrix interface at the onset of debonding. An interphase debonding model, which combine fracture mechanics with FE results on interphase shear stress and bridging fiber traction range, is proposed to establish a distribution of debonding lengths along a fiber-bridged matrix crack length as a function of temperature. The driving force for the interface debond crack, however, has an inverse relationship with the test temperature. The concurrent damage events of fiber stress evolution and continuous fiber strength degradation were postulated into a fiber fracture criterion to describe the fracture process of a bridging fiber. Furthermore, the fiber crack density has been correlated with the density of crack initiation sites observed in the interphase region along the reinforcing fibers in a SCS-6/Ti-21S composite.

At room temperature, the S-N curves for the composites showed no anticipated improvement over bulk matrix behavior. Although axial and transverse tensile strength results suggest a degradation in silicon-carbide fiber strength during composite fabrication, it appears that the poor fatigue life of the composites was caused by a reduced fatigue resistance of the reinforced Ti(6Al-4V) matrix. Microstructural studies indicate that the reduced matrix behavior was due, in part, to the presence of flawed and fractured fibers created near the specimen surfaces by preparation techniques. Another possible contributing factor is the large residual tensile stresses that can exist in fiber-reinforced matrices. These effects as well as the effects of fatigue testing at high temperature are discussed.

Book excerpt: Four layups of continuous-fiber silicon carbide (SCS2) fiber/aluminum matrix composites were tested to assess fatigue mechanisms, including stiffness loss, when cycled below their respective fatigue limits. The layups were [0]8, [02/±45]s, [0/90]2s, and [0/±45/90]s. The data were compared with predictions from the first author's previously published shakedown model which predicts fatigue-induced stiffness loss in metal matrix composites. A fifth layup, [±45]2s, was tested to compare the shakedown and fatigue limits. The particular batch of silicon carbide fibers tested in this program had a somewhat lower modulus (340 GPa) than expected and displayed poor bonding to the aluminum matrix. Good agreement was obtained between the stiffness loss model and the test data. The fatigue damage below the fatigue limit was primarily in the form of matrix cracking. The fatigue limit corresponded to the laminate shakedown limit for the [±45]2s laminate.
