The data were obtained using single-edge notch specimens machined from the head of rails and the web of wheels. Cyclic loading was performed on a hydraulic test machine at various R ratios.

Book excerpt: This paper deals with the influence of the manufacturing process on the fatigue behavior of pearlitic steels with different degrees of cold drawing. The fatigue crack growth rate (da/dN) is related to the stress intensity range (?K) by means a compliance method to evaluate the crack depth a in the samples at any instant during the tests. The analysis is focused on the Region II (Paris) of the fatigue behavior in which da/dN=C(?K)m, measuring the constants (C and m) for the different degrees of drawing. From the engineering point of view, the manufacturing process by cold drawing improves the fatigue behavior of the steels, since the fatigue crack growth rate decreases as the strain hardening level in the material increases. In particular, the coefficient m (slope of the Paris Law) remains almost constant and independent of the drawing degree, whereas the constant C decreases as the drawing degree rises. The paper focuses on the relationship between the pearlitic microstructure of the steels (progressively oriented as a consequence of the manufacturing process by cold drawing) and the macroscopic fatigue behavior. To this end, a detailed metallographic analysis was performed on the fatigue crack propagation path after cutting and polishing on a plane perpendicular to the crack front. It is seen that the fatigue crack growth path presents certain roughness at the microscopic level, such a roughness being related to the pearlitic colony boundaries more than to the ferrite/cementite lamellae interfaces.

Book excerpt: The fatigue crack initiation life of AISI 1018 steel was investigated using compact tension specimens having sharp notch root radii. The data were analyzed using two methods for predicting initiation in strain cycling experiments. Also, another approach in which initiation is related to the stress intensity factor was developed. The next phase, that of propagation, was studied using AISI 1018 steel and a new high strength steel HY-180. The crack propagation data obtained for both steels tested in air can be described accurately by the power law first suggested by Paris, da/dN = C(.delta. K)/sup n/, where a is the crack length, N the number of cycles, and C and n are material constants. However, the exponent n was found to be two times larger for AISI 1018 steel than HY-180 steel.

Book excerpt: The microstructure-mechanical properties relationships, fracture toughness, fatigue crack growth and fracture surface morphology of J6 bainitic, manganese, and pearlitic rail steels were studied. Microstructure-mechanical properties correlation of the three rail steels under consideration revealed that the bainitic rail steel has the highest mechanical properties as compared with austenitic manganese steel (AMS) and pearlitic rail steels. AMS shows very few signs of being work hardened or toughened, which usually increases the mechanical properties of the material. In pearlite, the microstructure has more detailed features that contribute to its mechanical properties. The bainitic steel has more alloying elements that when mixed, create so many dislocations that the dislocations cannot move against each other. This is where bainitic steel derives its strength. Fracture toughness analysis (KIc) of the three rail steels, namely bainitic, manganese and pearlitic was performed. A valid KIc was determined for the pearlitic and bainitic steels based on the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) E399 criteria.
