Book excerpt: A detailed micromechanics analysis has been performed on a composite of 2014 aluminum alloy matrix with 15 vol.% particulate SiC. This composite was manufactured by the Dural Co. by casting and extrusion. The matrix alloy was peak aged before testing. The microstructure was found to contain about 3% intermetallic particles in addition to those expected for this material. Fatigue cracks were grown from approximately threshold to rapid fracture stress intensities. Fatigue cracks growth rates and fracture toughness were measured. Analyses of the crack tips were performed by stereoimaging at low and intermediate stress intensities, and just prior to the onset of rapid fracture. Detailed strain maps were derived, and considerable influence of SiC on strain was found. Analyses of microcracks near the main crack were made and found to have only a small influence on fracture. Book excerpt: This report details studies carried out to identify the high temperature fatigue crack growth damage mechanisms in fiber-reinforced titanium metal matrix composites. The report consists of eight separate sections. In the first section, the fatigue and fatigue crack growth characteristics in neat laminates made of Timetal 21S were studied in relation to both temperature and loading frequency effects. The second section deals with the evolution of the thermal residual stresses in the composite when cooling from consolidation temperature or subjecting the composite to thermal cycles. A new mechanical simulation method capable of measuring the induced residual stress on real time basis has been developed in this study. The third section extends this issue to the time-dependent internal stress and strain states of MMCs under the thermomechanical loading conditions. Here, a new micromechanical model employing the four-phase concentric cylinder configuration has been proposed. Based on this model, the time-dependent behavior of continuous fiber reinforced metal matrix composites. It has been evaluated. These results are presented in the fourth section. The fifth, sixth and seventh sections of this report describe the influence of temperature and loading frequency on the crack growth process and suggest a fatigue-creep interactive mechanism acting at the crack tip during high temperature loadings. The last section of the report deals with the determination of the stress evolution in bridging fibers during the fatigue crack growth in SM 1240/Timetal-21S composite using the finite element method. Several parameters affecting this evolution were considered; namely, the process-induced residual stress, the creep characteristics of the matrix layer surrounding the fiber, the test temperature and the loading frequency.

Fatigue crack growth rates for the composite exceed those of the unreinforced alloy, except that the threshold stress intensity for growth is higher for the composite. Fracture toughness of the composite is about 9 square root of M cubed compared to a (reported) value of 29 square root of M cubed for the unreinforced alloy. The contributions to fracture toughness from work done within the plastic zone and in formation of the void sheet have been computed using analytical models. Fracture toughness is shown to result almost entirely from work done within the plastic zone of the growing crack. The matrix microstructure and the particulate characteristics are found to account for the elastic and fracture properties of this composite.

Book excerpt: In all cases of discontinuous silicon carbide (SiC/Al) metal matrix it was shown that classical composite strengthening mechanisms could not be used to explain the data. A high dislocation density model was proposed to account for the strengthening, but other factors, such as residual stress and texture, could contribute. These were investigated, and it was shown that texture had no effect and residual stress reduced the tensile yield stress. The fracture process in the composites is controlled by fracture of the matrix up to SiC particle sizes of 20 μm and for larger SiC size particles fracture of SiC begins to dominate. The fracture process in the matrix is influenced by residual hydrostatic tension and high density of dislocations generated at SiC/Al interfaces. Crack initiation fracture toughness does not depend on SiC particle size, for particle sizes less than 20 μm. Crack growth resistance increases as the size of the SiC particles increases.

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth in alumina particulate reinforced Ni3Al alloy composites, IC-50/Al2O3, fabricated using a spray deposition and co-injection process was examined and compared with that in a conventional nickel-based superalloy, Inconel 718. Single edge-notched fatigue crack growth specimens were tested under constant dK conditions using a custom fully automated servo-hydraulic test system. The results indicate that the threshold value of dK is at least as high as that for monolithic IC-5O, regardless of whether the composite is in the as-sprayed or HIPed condition. However, the HIPed microstructure exhibits a higher fatigue crack growth resistance in the Paris law regime compared to the as-sprayed material. Both composites exhibit a lower crack growth resistance compared to that for unreinforced IC-5O. Compared with Inconel 718, the present IC-5O MMCs consistently exhibit substantially better fatigue crack growth resistance properties.
