Download or read book Shot at Dawn written by Julian Putkowski and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 1990-12-31 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work of military history reveals the unsettling truth about British Army executions during WWI. The issue of military executions during the war has always been controversial, and embargoes have long kept historians from researching it. Julian Putkowski has spent decades uncovering the stories of mutinies and soldiers accused of desertion, and of the executions that followed. In Shot at Dawn, Putkowski and co-author Julian Sykes shed light on a practice that for too long has been shrouded in secrecy. They show that trials were grossly unfair and incompetent. Many of the condemned men had been soldiers of exemplary behavior, courage, and leadership who cracked under the dreadful strain of trench warfare. This acclaimed book is the authority on this shameful legacy.

Download or read book Executed at Dawn written by David Johnson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about the 302 British and Commonwealth soldiers who were executed for military offences during the First World War, but there is usually only a passing reference to those who took part – the members of the firing squad, the officer in charge, the medical officer and the padre. What are their stories? Through extensive research, David Johnson explores the controversial story of the men forced to shoot their fellow Tommies, examining how they were selected, how they were treated before, during and after the executions and why there were so many procedural variations in the way that the executions were conducted.

Book excerpt: The series finale featuring “a heroine you’ll never forget and a story that whips by at bullet speed” by the New York Times–bestselling author (Tess Gerritsen). When you have no time left, you realize what you’re really living for . . . For Dr. Angela Rossi the past holds only pain and the future promises only an early death as Fatal Insomnia consumes her. But Angie will never stop fighting. Especially now that she’s learned that her disease—and the disease she’s discovered in dozens of young children—isn’t a quirk of heredity but rather the creation of an unknown cabal. While Angie explores the betrayals and lies that led to the Fatal Insomnia epidemic, Devon Price, whose daughter is also infected, uses his street skills to hunt those responsible. He’ll do anything to save his daughter. Lie, cheat, steal, kill . . . it doesn’t matter. Not as long as Esme is saved. In the end, their only hope might be a desperate deal with the devil: the cabal behind the man-made Fatal Insomnia epidemic. A deal paid with blood. A deal not everyone will survive. Praise for the Fatal Insomnia series “CJ Lyons scores a major triumph . . . a remarkable medical thriller equal to the very best of Robin Cook or Michael Crichton. This intelligent, well-crafted novel, based on a startlingly original premise, builds up tension to the breaking point and beyond, delivering plenty of surprises along the way. Totally absorbing and impossible to put down.” —Douglas Preston, #1 New York Times–bestselling author

It’s a vicious, horrific crime: the brutal killing of a teenaged girl. When Pittsburgh detectives call FBI Supervisory Special Agent Lucy Guardino to the scene, their focus is on who—and why. Or one of the many drug cartels the father helped the DEA bring down seeking revenge? The answers seem clear when Pittsburgh becomes engulfed in flames as a violent narcoterrorist turns the city into a kill zone. Download or read book The Strangled Traveler written by Martine van Wœrkens and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British colonists in 1830s India lived in terror of the Thugs. Reputed to be brutal criminals, the Thugs supposedly strangled, beheaded, and robbed thousands of travelers in the goddess Kali's name. The British responded with equally brutal repression of the Thugs and developed a compulsive fascination with tales of their monstrous deeds. Did the Thugs really exist, or did the British invent them as an excuse to seize tighter control of India? Drawing on historical and anthropological accounts, Indian tales and sacred texts, and detailed analyses of the secret Thug language, Martine van Woerkens reveals for the first time the real story of the Thugs. Many different groups of Thugs actually did exist over the centuries, but the monsters the British made of them had much more to do with colonial imaginings of India than with the real Thugs. Tracing these imaginings down to the present, van Woerkens reveals the ongoing roles of the Thugs in fiction and film from Frankenstein to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
