Book Synopsis Dictionary of Bibliographic Abbreviations Found in the Scholarship of Classical Studies and Related Disciplines by : Jean S. Wellington
Download or read book Dictionary of Bibliographic Abbreviations Found in the Scholarship of Classical Studies and Related Disciplines written by Jean S. Wellington and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-08-30 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trying to identify abbreviated titles of journals and standard bibliographic works is a major difficulty facing researchers and librarians in the field of Classical Studies. This revised edition has been greatly expanded, with nearly twice the abbreviations (17,000) and bibliographic entries (12,400) as the first edition. Also, the Greek and Cyrillic abbreviations have increased by seven and four fold respectively. Abbreviations for internet sites are now included, as are those for associations in the broad area of Classical Studies. There are also more entries for Eastern European and regional archaeological publications. This revised volume is divided into two parts. Part One consists of an alphabetical listing of bibliographic abbreviations found in the scholarship of classical studies and related disciplines. Meanwhile, Part Two is an alphabetically arranged bibliographic descriptions for the works published in classical studies and related disciplines. Special efforts were made to increase the coverage in peripheral areas, making this new edition a useful reference tool for scholars in all subjects of study in the ancient and medieval world.

Book Synopsis Mycenean Pottery in Italy and Adjacent Areas by : Lord William Taylour
Download or read book Mycenean Pottery in Italy and Adjacent Areas written by Lord William Taylour and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1958-01-02 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 1958 book all the evidence bearing on Mycenean influence in Italy was gathered together for the first time. This evidence consists almost entirely of Mycenean pottery found in south Italy, Sicily, and the Aeolian Islands. Earlier studies on the subject are reviewed in the light of this research and in relationship to Furumark's analysis and classification of Mycenean pottery, but the most important part of the book is devoted to Mycenean finds from the excavations at Lipari and Torre Catelluccia, and to the large amount of pottery, for the greater part unpublished, from Taranto. The book is based on first-hand study by the author on the sites and is supplemented by more than 350 illustrations of pottery fragments and complete vases, very few of which have been previously published, and maps of the central Mediterranean and Sicily. Mycenean connexions with north Italy are also discussed, and the question of possible penetration to other areas in the western Mediterranean is briefly considered.

Book Synopsis The World of the Fullo by : Miko Flohr
Download or read book The World of the Fullo written by Miko Flohr and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-05-30 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World of the 'Fullo' takes a detailed look at the fullers, craftsmen who dealt with high-quality garments, of Roman Italy. Analyzing the social and economic worlds in which the fullers lived and worked, it tells the story of their economic circumstances, the way they organized their workshops, the places where they worked in the city, and their everyday lives on the shop floor and beyond. Through focusing on the lower segments of society, Flohr uses everyday work as the major organizing principle of the narrative: the volume discusses the decisions taken by those responsible for the organization of work, and how these decisions subsequently had an impact on the social lives of people carrying out the work. It emphasizes how socio-economic differences between cities resulted in fundamentally different working lives for many of their people, and that not only were economic activities shaped by Roman society, they in turn played a key role in shaping it. Using an in-depth and qualitative analysis of material remains related to economic activities, with a combined study of epigraphic and literary records, this volume portrays an insightful view of the socio-economic history of urban communities in the Roman world.

Book Synopsis The History of the Jewish People in the Age of Jesus Christ: Volume 1 by : Emil Schürer
Download or read book The History of the Jewish People in the Age of Jesus Christ: Volume 1 written by Emil Schürer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emil Schürer's Geschichte des judischen Volkes im Zeitalter Jesu Christi, originally published in German between 1874 and 1909 and in English between 1885 and 1891, is a critical presentation of Jewish history, institutions, and literature from 175 B.C. to A.D. 135. It has rendered invaluable services to scholars for nearly a century. The present work offers a fresh translation and a revision of the entire subject-matter. The bibliographies have been rejuvenated and supplemented; the sources are presented according to the latest scholarly editions; and all the new archaeological, epigraphical, numismatic and literary evidence, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bar Kokhba documents, has been introduced into the survey. Account has also been taken of the progress in historical research, both in the classical and Jewish fields. This work reminds students of the profound debt owed to nineteenth-century learning, setting it within a wider framework of contemporary knowledge, and provides a foundation on which future historians of Judaism in the age of Jesus may build.

Book Synopsis Western Ways by : Frederick Whitling
Download or read book Western Ways written by Frederick Whitling and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Western Ways, for the first time, the "foreign schools" in Rome and Athens, institutions dealing primarily with classical archaeology and art history, are discussed in historical terms as vehicles and figureheads of national scholarship. By emphasising the agency and role of individuals in relation to structures and tradition, the book shows how much may be gained by examining science and politics as two sides of the same coin. It sheds light on the scholarly organisation of foreign schools, and through them, on the organisation of classical archaeology and classical studies around the Mediterranean. With its breadth and depth of archival resources, Western Ways offers new perspectives on funding, national prestige and international collaboration in the world of scholarship, and places the foreign schools in a framework of nineteenth and twentieth century Italian and Greek history.
