Book excerpt: A digital fast feedback system for beam energy and position stabilization at the target of the CEBAF accelerator is capable of suppressing beam motion in the frequency band from 0 to 80 Hz and also performs narrow band suppression at the first twelve power line harmonics. The system utilizes two VME computers and runs at a 2.4 kHz sampling rate. The numerical algorithm is based on a recursive digital filter with an additional feedforward loop for suppression of high power line harmonics. The system suppresses beam motion by a factor greater than ten, thus achieving the stabilization of relative beam energy fluctuations to better than 10[sup[minus]5] and stabilization of beam position on the target to better than 20[micro]m.

Book excerpt: The electron beams being delivered to targets of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) are plagued with undesirable positional and energy fluctuations. These fluctuations primarily occur at harmonics of the power line frequency (60, 120, 180, etc. hertz), and their cause is rooted in electromagnetic fields generated by accelerator electronic equipment. It is possible to largely nullify these deviations by applying real time corrections to electromagnets and RF verniers along the beam line. This concept has been successfully applied at Jefferson Lab by extensively modifying the existing Beam Position Monitor (BPM) system with the integration of an algorithm that computes correction signals targeted at the power line harmonics. Many of the modifications required were due to the existing CEBAF BPM system not having the data acquisition bandwidth needed for this type of feedback system. This paper will describe the techniques required to transform the CEBAF standard BPM system into a high speed practical fast feedback system that coexists with the large scale control system--the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS)--that runs the CEBAF accelerator in daily operation.

A communications system, KISNet, provides fast communications links between microprocessors for feedback loops which involve multiple micros. Feedback loops have been installed in seventeen locations throughout the SLC and have proven to be invaluable in stabilizing the machine.

Book excerpt: Beam-based feedback control loops are required by the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) program in order to provide fast, single-pulse stabilization of beam parameters. Eight transverse feedback loops, a 6 x 6 longitudinal feedback loop, and a loop to maintain the electron bunch charge were successfully prototyped in MATLAB for the LCLS, and have been maintaining stability of the LCLS electron beam at beam rates up to 30Hz. In the final commissioning phase of LCLS the beam will be operating at up to 120Hz. In order to run the feedback loops at beam rate, the feedback loops will be implemented in EPICS IOCs with a dedicated ethernet multi-cast network. This paper will discuss the design of the beam-based Fast Feedback System for LCLS. Topics include MATLAB feedback prototyping, algorithm for 120Hz feedback, network design for fast data transport, actuator and sensor design for single-pulse control and sensor readback, and feedback configuration and runtime control.

Book excerpt: A fast feedback system based on concepts of modern control theory has been implemented in the CEBAF Control System to stabilize various machine parameters. The continuous wave operation of CEBAF requires that parameters such as beam energy and position are stabilized against fast fluctuations. The beam energy must be stabilized against fast gradient and phase fluctuations in the RF accelerating system. This fast feedback system currently operates at 60 Hz rate and is integrated with EPICS. The mathematical model of the system for various feedback loops is expressed in state space formalism. The design of control law and simulation of closed-loop system response is performed using MatlabTM and SimulinkTM. This paper describes the process of designing control algorithms, implementation of the fast feedback system and operational experience with this system at CEBAF. The performance of this feedback system, while operating at much higher rates with high closed loop gain, can be enhanced by continually performing on-line identification of the system from the input and output data. System identification is the process of developing or improving an analytically derived mathematical representation of a physical system using experimental data. The current status of this feature is presented.
