Book Synopsis William Tinsley (1831-1902): Speculative Publisher by : Peter Newbolt
Download or read book William Tinsley (1831-1902): Speculative Publisher written by Peter Newbolt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. An account of the activities of 19th-century publisher William Tinsley, particularly in relation to his authors and his chosen way of making a living. In considering the library-publishing system that dominated all aspects of fiction in the latter part of the 19th century, when down-payments rather than loyalties were the rewards of novelists, it may be surprising to find how wide were the variations in prices that publishers paid for such work. Differences appeared when individual publishers developed soft spots for particular authors, and in consequence they sometimes made fools of themselves. William Tinsley certainly did so, on several occasions, but was blessed, at least in later life, with the grace of never seriously regretting any of his mistakes. Examples of the nature of this good-hearted man are found in these pages. This account relies to an extent on Tinsley's two volumes of memoirs.

Download or read book Gay Men's Style written by Shaun Cole and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an astonishing series of interviews, Gay Men's Style will take you on a dizzying journey through shops, bars, clubs, gyms, workplaces and global city streets. Based on the lived experience of gay men of all ages from the UK, USA, Europe, Australia and Japan, Shaun Cole calls for a more nuanced understanding of gay male dress and style. Gay male identities in the 21st century are increasingly intersectional, fluid and flexible, from hyper-masculinity and muscularity seen in clubs and on the pages of gay magazines to self-knowing drag culture and androgynous gender play in the fashion industry. Gay Men's Style explores these multiple identities and the ways in which gay men self-identify and present themselves to the world through dress. This analysis is set alongside seismic shifts in technology, global communication and gay rights to redress and readdress the subject of gay men's style in a time of social and sexual upheaval.
Book Synopsis Business, Not Politics by : Katherine Sender
Download or read book Business, Not Politics written by Katherine Sender and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-05 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a hard-hitting book that refutes conventional wisdom, Katherine Sender explores the connection between the business of marketing to gay consumers and the politics of gay rights and identity. She disputes some marketers'claims that marketing appeals to gay and lesbian consumers are a matter of "business, not politics" and that the business of gay marketing can be considered independently of the politics of gay rights, identity, and visibility. She contends that the gay community is not a preexisting entity that marketers simply tap into; rather it is a construction, an imagined community formed not only through political activism but also through a commercially supported media. She argues that marketing has not only been formative in the constitution of a GLBT community and identity but also has had significant impact on the visibility of gays and lesbians.

Book excerpt: Gender, Race and Class in Media examines the mass media as economic and cultural institutions that shape our social identities. Through analyses of popular mass media entertainment genres, such as talk shows, soap operas, television sitcoms, advertising and pornography, students are invited to engage in critical mass media scholarship. A comprehensive introductory section outlines the bookâ²s integrated approach to media studies, which incorporates three distinct but related areas of investigation: the political economy of production, textual analysis and audience response. The readings include a dozen new original essays, edited for maximum accessibility. The book provides: - A comprehensive, critical introduction to Media Studies - An analysis of race that is integrated into all chapters - Articles on Cultural Studies that are accessible to undergraduates - An extensive bibliography and section on media resources - Expanded coverage of "queer" representations in mass media - A new section on the violence debates - A new section on the Internet Together with new section introductions, these provide a comprehensive critical introduction to mass media studies.
