Book excerpt: An SFO Museum exhibition catalogue covering eighty years of airline uniform design for the female flight attendant. Over seventy examples of uniform ensembles and accessories are presented. Full plate and detail photography reveal the evolution of this unique garment type as created by more than thirty designers, fashion houses, and couturiers from Paris, London, Milan, New York, and Hollywood. Seen against the backdrop of western fashion, the demands and innovations of meeting a set of strict, and sometime contradictory requirements, reveal the challenges and successes in paralleling, lagging behind, or even jumping ahead of trends and movements in the larger world of contemporary fashion. Over twenty airlines are included with uniforms dating from the 1930s to the present.

Book excerpt: The troubles of the airline system have become acute in the post-terrorist era. As the average cost of a flight has come down in the last twenty years, the airlines have survived by keeping planes full and funneling traffic through a centralized hub-and-spoke routing system. Virtually all of the technological innovation in airplanes in the last thirty years has been devoted to moving passengers more efficiently between major hubs. But what was left out of this equation was the convenience and flexibility of the average traveler. Now, because of heightened security, hours of waiting are tacked onto each trip. As James Fallows vividly explains, a technological revolution is under way that will relieve this problem. Free Flight features the stories of three groups who are inventing and building the future of all air travel: NASA, Cirrus Design in Duluth, Minnesota, and Eclipse Aviation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. These ventures should make it possible for more people to travel the way corporate executives have for years: in small jet planes, from the airport that's closest to their home or office directly to the airport closest to where they really want to go. This will be possible because of a product now missing from the vast array of flying devices: small, radically inexpensive jet planes, as different from airliners as personal computers are from mainframes. And, as Fallows explains in a new preface, a system that avoids the congestion of the overloaded hub system will offer advantages in speed, convenience, and especially security in the new environment of air travel.

Book excerpt: The perfect companion to any flight - a guide to the science on view from your window seat. There are few times when science is so immediate as when you're in a plane. Your life is in the hands of the scientists and engineers who enable tons of metal and plastic to hurtle through the sky at hundreds of miles an hour. Inflight Science shows how you stay alive up there - but that's only the beginning. Brian Clegg explains the ever changing view, whether it's crop circles or clouds, mountains or river deltas, and describes simple experiments to show how a wing provides lift, or what happens if you try to open a door in midair (don't!). On a plane you'll experience the impact of relativity, the power of natural radiation and the effect of altitude on the boiling point of tea. Among the many things you'll learn is why the sky is blue, the cause of thunderstorms and the impact of volcanic ash in an enjoyable tour of mid-air science. Every moment of your journey is an opportunity to experience science in action: Inflight Science will be your guide.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive study of dress in Northern Europe from the early fourteenth century to the beginning of the Renaissance,Illuminating Fashion is the first thorough study of the history of fashion in this period based solely on firmly dated or datable works of art. It draws on illuminated manuscripts, early printed books, tapestries, paintings, and sculpture from museums and libraries around the world. "Symbolism and metaphors are buried in the art of fashion," says Roger Wieck, the editor ofIlluminating Fashion. Examining the role of social customs and politics in influencing dress, at a time of rapid change in fashion, this fully illustrated volume demonstrates the richness of such symbolism in medieval art and how artists used clothing and costume to help viewers interpret an image. At the heart of the work isA Pictorial History of Fashion, 1325 to 1515, an album of over 300 illustrations with commentary. This is followed by a comprehensive glossary of medieval English and French clothing terms and an extensive list of dated and datable works of art. Not only can this fully illustrated volume be used as guide to a fuller understanding of the works of art, it can also help date an undated work; reveal the shape and structure of actual garments; and open up a picture's iconographic and social content. It is invaluable for costume designers, students and scholars of the history of dress and history of art, as well as those who need to date works of art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report presents a height-weight sizing system for use by designers and fitters of flight clothing. The observations and recommendations reported here are based on a re-analysis of the body size data of the 1950 Anthropometric Survey of Air Force flying personnel. This re-analysis consisted of selecting pairs of dimensions and correlating these with other dimensions important in clothing design. Among the pairs studied, height and weight have been chosen as basic sizing dimensions because they generally yield the highest correlations with other bodily dimensions. In addition to presenting the methodology used in the present problem, the practical and statistical problems of developing a sizing system are thoroughly discussed. Finally, tables of body dimensional data are presented for several basic size programs (6-size, 8-size, 9-size, and 12-size), since the number of sizes varies with the type of garment. These tables include fitting charts, estimated procurement tariffs, design ranges, mean values for size groups, and bivariate tables for height and weight with size categories marked off for each program. The choice and application of these programs are discussed in detail. Descriptions of the selected body dimensions are included. Advantages of the height-weight system include improved fit, fewer alterations, minimal adjustability, and simplified procurement, distribution and fitting procedures."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This fascinating book examines every aspect of airline style, from the company liveries and interior designs of planes to advertising, haute couture, and airborne haute cuisine. Divided into four sections covering fashion, food, interior design, and identity, Airline shows how airborne culture has changed since the 1920s. The book spans the conservative to the outrageous, from saris to hotpants, from Hugh Hefner's private jet to the huge Airbus A380. A wide selection of retro styles are illustrated with illuminating archive material and images of ephemera. Airline uncovers the style, image, and experience of the parallel universe that exists at 30,000 feet.
