Book excerpt: Between 2000-2008 India's economic and political ascendancy were charted in the worlds press. This period of dynamism ushered in an increased sense of confidence, aspiration and pride in being Indian. This book is about the response of the design community to India's changing environment. It focuses on fashion, graphic and interior design as metaphors of the complex networks that constitute globalisation within key metropolitan centres of India. Examined within the context of their production and consumption, and through their economic, social, political and cultural underpinnings, a picture emerges which conveys how designers grapple with issues of identity and globalisation, nationhood and modernity, ethics and commerce.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fashion illustration is and always has been about far more than pretty drawings of pretty dresses. This lavish celebration of today’s leading artists in the field showcases the timeless craft and amazing diversity that characterize the genre. From David Downton to Cecilia Carlstedt and from Jason Brooks to Jordi Labanda, 28 masters of fashion illustration from across the world are featured, one by one, in a grand tour of the best work currently produced. While some illustrators create daringly bold graphics, others prefer delicate watercolours and ink drawings. Throughout the volume, both hi-tech multimedia effects and traditional drawing skills are given pride of place, with many of the artists using a mixture of techniques. Lively commentary accompanies the images, while interviews with each illustrator provide further insight into their influences and methods. A source of inspiration for aspiring illustrators, designers and advertising creatives, this gorgeous volume will also catch the eye of fashion lovers and all those who have an interest in contemporary figurative art and visual communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, object-oriented programming is emerging from the research labora tories and invading into the field of industrial applications. More and more products have been implemented with the aid of object-oriented programming techniques and tools, usually as extensions of traditional languages in hybrid development systems. Some of the better known examples are OSF-Motif, News, Objective-C on the NeXT computer, the C extension C++, and CLOS an object oriented extension of LISP. All of these developments incorporate interactive graphics. Effective object-oriented systems in combination with a graphics kernel does it mean that the field of computer graphics has now become merely an aspect of the object-oriented world? We do not think so. In spite of interesting individual developments, there are still no sound object-oriented graphics sys tems available. If it is desired to develop a complex graphics application embed ded in a window-oriented system then it is still necessary to work with elemen tary tools. What is to be displayed and interactively modified inside a window must be specified with a set of graphics primitives at a low level, or has to be written with a standardized graphics kernel system such as GKS or PHIGS, i. e. , by kernels specified and implemented in a non-object-oriented style. With the terms GKS and PHIGS we enter the world of international graphics standards. GKS and PHIGS constitute systems, not mere collections of graphics primitives.

This book explores the graphic imagery and packaging that make fashion sell, putting the spotlight on the graphic designers and art directors who create the brand image -- from the labels inside clothes to the swing tags and shopping bags. At the heart of the book are 25 case studies which investigate the creation of individual fashion brands with analysis of the graphics, from the typography to the colour choices, as well as show invitations, the website, fragrance and cosmetic images. Each case study will examine closely the working realtionships between the fashion and graphic designer. Art directors/fashion labels featured include Fabien Baron's work with Burberry and Armani; Alan Aboud and Paul Smith; Michael Nash and Alexander McQueen/ John Galliano; as well as the in-house graphic teams of Dolce & Gabbana, Stella Mc Cartney, IIssey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons.
