This book was released on 2019-11-29 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promoting rural entrepreneurship is a necessary step to limit the negative effects of classical agricultural policy based on a linear process and attracting secondary resources to the economic process. The analysis of agricultural policy and rural development in conjunction to entrepreneurship in terms of production may represent a further step in understanding the role and importance of diversifying the rural potentials in contemporary economies. The Handbook of Research on Agricultural Policy, Rural Development, and Entrepreneurship in Contemporary Economies is an essential publication of academic research that examines agricultural policy and its impact on shaping future resilient economy in rural areas and identifies green business models and new business patterns in rural communities. Covering a range of topics such as entrepreneurship, product management, and marketing, this book is ideal for researchers, policymakers, academicians, economists, agriculture professionals, rural developers, business investors, and students.
Book Synopsis Cultivating Knowledge by : Andrew Flachs
Download or read book Cultivating Knowledge written by Andrew Flachs and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single seed is more than just the promise of a plant. In rural south India, seeds represent diverging paths toward a sustainable livelihood. Development programs and global agribusiness promote genetically modified seeds and organic certification as a path toward more sustainable cotton production, but these solutions mask a complex web of economic, social, political, and ecological issues that may have consequences as dire as death. In Cultivating Knowledge anthropologist Andrew Flachs shows how rural farmers come to plant genetically modified or certified organic cotton, sometimes during moments of agrarian crisis. Interweaving ethnographic detail, discussions of ecological knowledge, and deep history, Flachs uncovers the unintended consequences of new technologies, which offer great benefits to some—but at others’ expense. Flachs shows that farmers do not make simple cost-benefit analyses when evaluating new technologies and options. Their evaluation of development is a complex and shifting calculation of social meaning, performance, economics, and personal aspiration. Only by understanding this complicated nexus can we begin to understand sustainable agriculture. By comparing the experiences of farmers engaged with these mutually exclusive visions for the future of agriculture, Cultivating Knowledge investigates the human responses to global agrarian change. It illuminates the local impact of global changes: the slow, persistent dangers of pesticides, inequalities in rural life, the aspirations of people who grow fibers sent around the world, the place of ecological knowledge in modern agriculture, and even the complex threat of suicide. It all begins with a seed.

Book Synopsis Income aspirations, migration, and investments on and off the farm: Evidence from rural Tajikistan by : Bloem, Jeffrey R.
Download or read book Income aspirations, migration, and investments on and off the farm: Evidence from rural Tajikistan written by Bloem, Jeffrey R. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2023-12-08 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In places with few casual or salaried employment opportunities, investments in farm or non-farm assets may offer the main pathway to increased incomes locally, whereas others may seek alternative investment options elsewhere—as migrants. What factors, then, explain these investment choices? One theory suggests that aspirations that are ahead, but not too far ahead, of current levels provide the best incentive for promoting investment. If this theory holds, then estimates of the relationship between the aspirations gap and investment choices should take the form of a non-monotonic inverted U-shape. We test for such a relationship between the income aspirations gap and investments in migration, farm assets, and non-farm assets using data from a household survey in rural Tajikistan. We find evidence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between the income aspirations gap and measures of migration, with the strongest relationship found with international migration. Strikingly, we do not observe any association between the income aspirations gap and measures of investment in farm or non-farm assets. Exploring heterogeneity, we find that these results can vary by household poverty status and by the respondent’s gender. Investigating a possible mechanism, we find that the relationship between the income aspirations gap and migration seems to be driven by remittances, which outweigh migration costs and increase household income.

Book excerpt: The major purpose of this study is to determine the extent of poverty and ascertain the causes and possible ways for poverty alleviation as perceived by the rural people. Poverty alleviation was measured by computing the change in food availability, sources of drinking water, physical assets, sanitation and increasing scope of income due to involvement in the Chars Livelihoods Programme (CLP). Field work for the study was carried out in Haldia union of Shaghata upazila under Gaibandha district of Bangladesh. Data was collected from January to February 2007 from a randomly selected sample of 102 CLP beneficiaries from a total of 148 through personal contact by using interview schedules, made by the researcher himself, which contained simple and direct questions with different scales. The paired “t” test was used to measure the comparative change of ‘before’ and ‘after’ involvement in CLP. Pearson product moment correlation co-efficient was computed in order to explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of the respondents and their poverty alleviation.

Book Synopsis Saving Society by : Bernard S Phillips
Download or read book Saving Society written by Bernard S Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do many problems throughout the world seem to be getting worse? Saving Society argues that a dramatic change in our mode of thinking is required. The authors show how many of our fundamental assumptions lead to an overly bureaucratic approach, blocking solutions to many of our problems. They contrast our present emotional repression and conforming behaviour with a more liberated form of perception, thought and emotional expression, which could allow us to break out of these bureaucratic routines. Saving Society shows how this alternative approach might lay the basis for more effective and democratic institutions.
Book Synopsis Through a Lens of Scarcity by : Hanna Luetke Lanfer
Download or read book Through a Lens of Scarcity written by Hanna Luetke Lanfer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conditions for strategic health communication campaigns as a public health tool are examined for low-income contexts. The theoretical framework drafts a socioecological model with an extension of poverty influences to bring into focus the dynamics of a resource-poor environment and its impact on health-related behaviours and health campaigns. The research design includes two studies conducted in Sierra Leone. Study 1 triangulated three qualitative methods to explore past and current health communication practice in Sierra Leone. Study 2 is a mixed-methods field experiment on handwashing which explored the effects of different campaign strategies. Results show that a community-based participatory approach with the inclusion of local leaders as health messengers was associated with higher chances of behaviour change than a non-treated setting. Further pathways for context-sensitive approaches for deprived audiences are suggested.
