The results show that (i) there is a modest difference in the overall household dietary diversity score between irrigators and non-irrigators, (ii) there are significant differences in the consumption of animal source foods between irrigators and non-irrigators, (iii) there are significant differences in the consumption of fruits and vegetables as well as sugar and honey between irrigators and non-irrigators, and (iv) the sources of food consumption differ between irrigators and non-irrigators. The analysis shows strong association between households’ nutritional status and their access to irrigation, with evidences suggesting that the irrigation-nutrition linkages play out both through the income and production pathways in Northern Ghana.

Book excerpt: Weather shocks and other shocks affecting the economy of farm households often trigger a cascade of coping mechanisms, from reducing food consumption to selling assets, with potentially lasting consequences on child development. In polygynous households (in which a man is married to several women), the factors that may aggravate or mitigate the impacts of such adverse events are still poorly understood. In particular, little is known about the complex mechanisms through which women’s empowerment may affect the allocation of household resources in the presence of more than one female decision-maker. Where polygyny is associated with discriminatory social norms, co-wives may have limited bargaining power, which may translate into poorer outcomes for their children. While competition between co-wives may generate inefficiencies in the allocation of household resources, cooperation in the domains of agricultural production or domestic labor may lead to economies of scale and facilitate informal risk sharing. The rank of each co-wife may also have a strong influence on the welfare of her own children, relative to other children. Using the Feed the Future Ghana Population Survey data, I investigate the relationship between polygyny and children’s nutrition, and how it may be mediated through women’s bargaining power. Using the age of each co-wife as a proxy for rank, I also study how the senior-wife status of a mother may influence her children’s nutrition outcomes.

Book excerpt: "Currently, almost 33 percent of the population of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are undernourished and is the only region of the world where hunger is projected to worsen over the next two decades. According to the World Food Program, over 2 million people were most vulnerable of becoming food insecure throughout Ghana in 2012. The issues of food security in northern Ghana has gained a top priority in many areas of policy making. However, the prevalence of food inadequacy as a result of insufficient resources to access food among individual household has led to increasing food insecurity in the country. By using the sixth round of Ghana Living Standard Survey (GLSS) data conducted from 2012/2013, the study aimed at analysing food security status across farming households in Eastern region and compare it to the Northern region of Ghana. The food security index generated from Cost-of-Calorie method was adopted and the recommended daily requirement was used to determine the household food security status. The factors influencing household food security status was then examined using logistic regression model. The analysis indicates that almost half of the sampled farming households in Eastern region (42.7%) and Northern region (46.0%) were food insecure. The depth of food insecurity indicates that farming households in Eastern region consumed 34% less than their daily calorie requirement while farming households in Northern region consumed 40% less than the requirement. The logistic result shows that monthly household income, off-farm activities and total quantity of own farm production positively and significantly influenced households' food security in Eastern region. It was revealed that household size negatively and significantly affected food security in Eastern region. Further, monthly household income, total quantity of own farm production and dependency ratio positively and significantly affected households' food security in Northern region. The factors that were negatively and significantly affecting household food security in Northern region included the size of households and the number of years spent in education. Policies which targeted to increase income of farmers through the provision of other activities aside farming, to help boost total yields of farming households, and intensive family planning awareness raising programs have key roles to play in these areas in order to improve households' food security in Ghana. The study recommends special training that relate to agriculture so that farmers can utilize whatever knowledge or skills acquired in their production activities to achieve food security in the future." --

Africa RISING aims to create opportunities for smallholder farmers in Africa south of the Sahara (through action research and development partnerships) by sustainably intensifying their farming systems and improving food, nutrition, and income security. Initiated in 2012, the program is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of the U.S. government’s Feed the Future (FTF) initiative. The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) leads a sustainable intensification effort focusing on the cereal-based farming systems in the Guinea Savannah Zone of West Africa (Ghana and Mali) and East and Southern Africa (Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia) while the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) leads the research activities focusing on the crop-livestock systems of the Ethiopian highlands. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has been tasked with M&E of the three projects. Ghana Africa RISING is being implemented in Northern, Upper East, and Upper West regions of Ghana, within the FTF Zones of Influence. The research activities are led by IITA and Wageningen University (WUR). GARBES collected detailed household- and plot-crop level data addressing various topics: employment (agricultural and non-agricultural); health; agricultural land; crop inputs, harvest, storage, and sale; livestock ownership, feed, and water; agriculture-related challenges and coping strategies; credit and off-farm income sources; housing condition and ownership of various durable assets; subjective welfare and food security; household-level food consumption; non-food expenditure; agricultural shocks; and child and women anthropometry. The community survey collected data on access to basic services; extension services; social organizations, mobility, and village-level shocks; access to natural resources; metric conversion units; and prices of crops and food items. GARBES covered 1,284 households and 50 communities drawn from the three project regions. Data were collected using structured questionnaires in multiple local languages through Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (using SurveyCTO).

Unravelling the determinants of food insecurity will contribute to policy aimed at addressing this menace. The study contributes to addressing SDG goal 2 of zero hunger in Ghana by examining the factors responsible for insecurity and how it can be tackled through policy. The purpose of this research is to examine the determinants of food security across the regions of Ghana. The study employed the Ghana living standard survey (GLSS 7) data. Households' food security was measured using a food consumption score (FCS). The partial proportional odds model (PPO) was employed to analyse the drivers of household food security in Ghana due to the categorical nature of the dependent variable. The results show that being a male, engaging in farming or non-farm employment, and living in rural areas decrease the household's chances of falling into food poverty. However, larger household sizes, as well as increased education raise the odds of falling into consumption poverty at the household level. The study, therefore, concluded that households in Ghana are poor food consumption resulting from several factors amongst other are; education level, employment status, engagement in farming, and the location of the household. Policies that ensure food availability in both urban and rural communities which will improve resilience and improve household food and nutrition security should be a priority to facilitate the country's achievement of the sustainable development goals.
