Book excerpt: Farewell Wendy is an extremely touching tale. One that asks all the readers’ sensibilities be brought to bear on this story. Wendy has to carry the weight of the lack of affection. Her ongoing search for this feeling will confront her with choices to be made; intimate choices that will also affect her loved ones. Will she make the right choice? Sometimes we take things close to us for granted and only when we lose them, we realise their true importance. This story makes us consider how much importance we attribute to things. Michele J Dulay spent her undergrad working in the music industry filming music videos and working with clients to allow them to show their emotions through art. She became drawn toward the idea of wanting to help others use their voices in a way that she could relate to, by telling stories that are familiar to others to create a safe place. She found herself in grad school where the story of Farewell Wendy came to life. She hopes to continue writing stories to help others relate to emotions they are too scared to let slip of their tongue. Dulay currently lives in Northeast Ohio where she spends her days painting and reading until the skies grow dark.

When she first arrived at Gladstown College, she thought she would make friends and go to parties; everything a college student is supposed to do. But here she is, three and a half years later, with no friends on campus and failing grades. While cleaning lab supplies for extra credit one afternoon, Wendy noticed the closet door swing open all on its own. She investigates the odd happening, only to find herself locked in the closet as the ground rumbles. When the ground stops shaking, and the door opens back up, Wendy realizes she is no longer in the classroom. Or even in Gladstown. When she steps out of the closet, she finds herself somewhere in the middle of a forest with a bow being pointed directly at her by a strange man dressed like he’s ready for combat. According to him, she has been dropped somewhere on the outskirts of the Farewell Kingdom.

Book excerpt: With her debut album Switched-On Bach, composer and electronic musician Wendy Carlos (b. 1939) brought the sound of the Moog synthesizer to a generation of listeners, helping to effect arguably one of the most substantial changes in popular music's sound since musicians began using amplifiers. Her story is not only one of a person who blazed new trails in electronic music for decades but is also the story of a person who intersected in many ways with American popular culture, medicine, and social trends during the second half of the 20th century and well into the 21st. There is much to tell about her life and about the ways in which her life reflects many dimensions of American culture. Carlos's identity as a transgender woman has shaped many aspects of her life, her career, how she relates to the public, and how the public has received her and her music. Cultural factors surrounding the treatment of transgender people affected many of the decisions that Carlos has made over the decades. Additionally, cultural reception and perception of transgender people has colored how journalists, scholars, and fans have written about Carlos and her music for decades.

While Ethelred's success as a writer is distinctly average, Elsie sees this as an opportunity to scout for new, hopefully more lucrative, talent. But heavy snow falls overnight, trapping those early arrivals inside, and tensions are quick to emerge between the assembled group. When one of their number goes missing, Ethelred leads a search party and makes a gruesome discovery. With no phone signal and no hope of summoning the police, can Ethelred and Elsie identify the killer among them before one of them is next?

Book excerpt: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are among the most challenging patients for clinicians to treat. Their behaviors and emotions can shift abruptly. As a result, these patients can seem like therapeutic moving targets, and improvement can be vexingly slow. A Developmental Model of Borderline Personality Disorder is a landmark work on this difficult condition. The book emphasizes a developmental approach to BPD based on an in-depth study of inpatients at Chestnut Lodge in Rockville, Maryland, during the years 1950 through 1975 and the authors' thirty years of clinical and supervisory experience. Using information gleaned from the original clinical notes and follow-up studies, the authors present four intriguing case studies to chart the etiology, long-term course, and clinical manifestations of BPD. With three main parts that cover theory, case examples, and practical strategies for treatment, A Developmental Model of Borderline Personality Disorder Introduces the reader to a multidimensional and integrated etiologic model of BPD to inform treatment Helps clinicians develop the understanding and empathy needed to deal with difficult patient behaviors Gives strategies for designing psychotherapy in tandem with psychosocial services to help patients with BPD improve or sustain functioning in the community A Developmental Model of Borderline Personality Disorder combines rich clinical case descriptions with an integrated theoretical model that captures the complexities of BPD. The first resource to chart BPD over the long term in such depth, this book is a first-rate clinical resource that reads like a novel, illuminating the disorder to help interpret its causes and course. It will inspire and encourage clinicians, along with patients and their family members, to strive for success in treating this difficult disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume reviews and revisits the life and work of Spanish writer, editor, and intellectual Esther Tusquets (1936–2012). The author of some seven novels, three collections of short stories, two books for children, seven volumes of essays and memoirs, and an extensive corpus of journalistic and other short prose texts, Tusquets’s contributions to contemporary Spanish culture and literature are vast and heterogeneous. Most academic scholarship to date has been dedicated to Tusquets’s groundbreaking novelistic trilogy (El mismo mar de todos los veranos [1978], El amor es un juego solitario [1979], Varada tras el último naufragio [1980]) and to her unified short-story collection, Siete miradas en el mismo paisaje (1979). The essays contained in Esther Tusquets: Scholarly Correspondences offer new readings of the author’s canonical fiction and delve into the largely unexplored terrain of her non-fiction. Participating faculty-scholars include Nina L. Molinaro (University of Colorado at Boulder); Maureen Tobin Stanley (University of Minnesota Duluth); Inmaculada Pertusa-Seva (Western Kentucky University); Laura Lonsdale (Queen’s College, University of Oxford); Stacey Dolgin Casado (University of Georgia); Abigail Lee Six (Royal Holloway, University of London); María Elena Soliño (University of Houston); Mayte de Lama (Elon University); Catherine G. Bellver (University of Nevada, Las Vegas); Rosalía Cornejo Parriego (University of Ottawa); Meri Torras Francès (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona); and Mary S. Vázquez (Davidson College). The volume concludes with a complete bibliography by Tiffany L. Malloy of works by and about Tusquets.

Book excerpt: Can Marcus be friends with a girl without thinking about sex all the time? Marcus Rosenbloom wants to be a writer almost as much as he doesn’t want to be a virgin anymore. At seventeen years old, Marcus thinks, shouldn’t he have done it already? Crossed over to the other side, where everyone is different, more adult, more . . . experienced? His friend Alec is smooth and charming around girls; Marcus definitely can’t talk to him about his doubts. The only person he confides in is Wendy, a childhood friend who just moved back to Sherwood High to finish her senior year. Marcus and Wendy share their crushes, their disappointments, and their nervousness about dating and sex. Then Marcus has an idea: If he and Wendy share the same problem, maybe they can share a solution, too . . . or maybe it’s all much more complicated than he ever imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sestina (of medieval French origin) is a complex poetic form of 39 lines (six sestets and a three-line "envoy") in which the six end-words (teleutons) of the lines of the first sestet stanza are repeated in a specific order as teleutons in the five succeeding sestets. In the envoy, the six teleutons are again picked up, one of them being buried in, and one finishing, each line. Because of the complexity of the form, the sestina fell out of favor with poets for several decades. However, a twenty-first century revival of the form is underway. This is the first anthology of sestinas that showcases both traditional and innovative examples of the form by modern and contemporary poets, award winners, and emerging writers alike. Organized by such themes as Americana; Art; Love and Sex; and Memory, Contemplation, Retrospection, and Death, the collection also includes sestinas with irregular teleutons and unconventional sestinas. An evocative introduction by Marilyn Krysl acquaints readers with the form. The volume concludes with useful indexes of first lines and teleutons, increasing access to the poems beyond the poets' names.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the Trial of the Century as only Dominick Dunne can write it. Told from the point of view of one of Dunne's most familiar fictional characters-Gus Bailey-Another City, Not My Own tells how Gus, the movers and shakers of Los Angeles, and the city itself are drawn into the vortex of the O.J. Simpson trial. We have met Gus Bailey in previous novels by Dominick Dunne. He is a writer and journalist, father of a murdered child, and chronicler of justice-served or denied-as it relates to the rich and famous. Now back in Los Angeles, a city that once adored him and later shunned him, Gus is caught up in what soon becomes a national obsession. Using real names and places, Dunne interweaves the story of the trial with the personal trials Gus endures as he faces his own mortality. By day, Gus is at the courthouse, the confidant of the Goldman and Simpson families, the lawyers, the journalists, the hangers-on, even the judge; at night he is the honored guest at the most dazzling gatherings in town as everyone-from Kirk Douglas to Heidi Fleiss, from Elizabeth Taylor to Nancy Reagan-delights in the latest news from the corridors of the courthouse. Another City, Not My Own does what no other book on this sensational case has been able to do because of Dominick Dunne's unique ability to probe the sensibilities of participants and observers. This book illuminates the meaning of guilt and innocence in America today. A vivid, revealing achievement, Another City, Not My Own is Dominick Dunne at his best.

Book excerpt: Wilma: An Alaska Tale of One Teacher, Two Teenagers, and Three Wolverines combines Alaska adventures and teenage life in the 1970s. It is the story of Pam Walker, Tom Lerner, and their junior high school biology teacher, William Marx. The action moves from an Anchorage classroom to the hilarious capture of a female wolverine named Wilma in the Alaska wilderness. A side trip to a science fair in Texas, a thrilling hunting expedition and a developing romance all culminate on a very realistic note. The antics of Wilma's kits, Wendy, and Willy, weave in and out of the narrative. The result is a young adult novel that is both entertaining and educational. There are very few wolverine novels published and those that do exist contain many inaccuracies. This story will give the reader an accurate understanding of this wary and difficult to observe animal. Students will be encouraged to get involved in their local science fairs.

Book excerpt: Wendy is a good Welsh dragon, living on Pendragon hill in Llandraig. She has friends and lovers, past and present, in many parts of the world - under the water in Loch Ness, on an island in Polynesia (an emigrant from Cader Idris in Wales), in Edinburgh (once on Dragon Hill at Uffington, where he took umbrage at the inaccuracy of his portrait carved in chalk on the hill), under the Drachenfels on the Rhine in Germany (where he took refuge from a Wanderer and a young Hero with a sword), in Cambridge, in Turkey, in castles in Romania and Hungary, in Qumran overlooking the Dead Sea in Israel, in Bolivia with an ex-Welsh community (who had quarrelled with Merlin in Arthurian times), and in Armenia. Wendy is now making and selling magic carpets (with full anti-missile properties), and others. She also has six children to get settled in good jobs and with nice partners or even a husband or wife (and who knows how to organize a dragon marriage?). One, a true Welsh red dragon, first becomes a member of the Welsh Parliamentary Assembly and then an ambassador for the Prince of Wales. The second agrees to settle on the Drachenfels, which despite its name has had no dragon since Fafner hid himself deep below. The third has a job, shared with her Chinese husband, as the cuckoos of a giant dragon clock in a Swiss valley. The fourth becomes an attraction in Days-of-Oldeland at Lake Havasu in Arizona, where he meets other survivors from older times. The fifth becomes the charge of a Chinese dynasty who traditionally looked after the Imperial five-clawed dragons, and who settles with her in Scotland - where she falls in love with the son of Wendy's old friend in Loch Ness. And the last, after finding that kangaroos are indigestible, falls for the son of the magic carpet maker. The book is full of musical references, unpolitically-correct remarks about bankers, politicians, and others, and puns - telling how Wendy travels the world, visiting her old friends, getting her children settled down, enjoying good food (often of unwary passers-by), and reviving all her old affections.
