Prohibition is a dangerous time to be a working-class woman in New York City, but Vivian Kelly has finally found some measure of stability and freedom. By day, she’s a respectable shop assistant, delivering luxurious dresses to the city’s wealthy and elite. At night, she joins the madcap revelry of New York’s underworld, serving illegal drinks and dancing into the morning at a secretive, back-alley speakeasy known as the Nightingale. She's found, if not love, then something like it with her bootlegger sweetheart, Leo, even if she can't quite forget the allure of the Nightingale's sultry owner, Honor Huxley. Then the husband of a wealthy client is discovered dead in his study, and Vivian was the last known person to see him alive. With the police and the press both eager to name a culprit in the high-profile case, she finds herself the primary murder suspect. She can’t flee town without endangering the people she loves, but Vivian isn’t the sort of girl to go down without a fight. She'll cash in every favor she has from the criminals she calls friends to prove she had no connection to the dead man. But she can't prove what isn't true. The more Vivian digs into the man’s life, and as the police close in on her, the harder it is to avoid the truth: someone she knows wanted him dead. And the best way to get away with murder is to set up a girl like Vivian to take the fall.

Book Synopsis Coming Climate Crisis? by : Claire L. Parkinson
Download or read book Coming Climate Crisis? written by Claire L. Parkinson and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decisively cutting through the hyperbole on both sides of the debate, distinguished NASA climatologist Claire L. Parkinson brings much-needed balance and perspective to the highly contentious issue of climate change. Offering a deeply knowledgeable overview of global conditions past and present, the author lays out a compelling argument that our understandings and models are inadequate for confident predictions of the intended and unintended consequences of various projects now under consideration to modify future climate. In one compact volume, Parkinson presents a coherent synopsis of the 4.6-billion-year history of climate change on planet Earth—both before and after humans became a significant factor—and explores current concerns regarding continued global warming and its possible consequences. She ranges over the massive geoengineering schemes being proposed and why we need to be cautious about them, the limitations of current global climate models and projections, the key arguments made by those skeptical of the mainstream views, and the realistic ways we can lessen destructive human impacts on our planet. While discussing all of these polarizing topics, the author consistently shows respect for the views of alarmists, skeptics, and the vast majority of people whose positions lie somewhere between those two extremes. The book clarifies some of the most contentious points in the climate debate, and in the process treats us to a fascinating discussion interweaving Earth history, science, the history of science, and human nature. Readers will be rewarded with a genuine understanding of a complex issue that could be among the most important facing humankind in the coming decades.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Psychology and Law by : Dorothy K. Kagehiro
Download or read book Handbook of Psychology and Law written by Dorothy K. Kagehiro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shari Seidman Diamond Scholars interested in psychology and law are fond of c1aiming origins for psycholegal research that date back four score and three years ago to Hugo von Munsterberg's On the Witness Stand, published in 1908. These early roots can mislead the casual observer about the history of psychology and law. Vigorous and sustained research in the field is a recent phenomenon. It is only 15 years since the first review of psy chology and law appeared in the Annual Review of Psychology (Tapp, 1976). The following year saw the first issue of Law and Human Behavior, the official publication of the American Psychology-Law Society and now the journal of the American Psychological Associ ation's Division of Psychology and Law. Few psychology departments offered even a single course in psychology and law before 1973, while by 1982 1/4 of psychology graduate programs had at least one course, and a number had begun to offer forensic minors and/or joint J. D. / Ph. D. programs (Freeman & Roesch, see Chapter 28). Yet this short period of less than 20 years has seen a dramatic level of activity. Its strengths and weaknesses, excitements and disappointments, are aII captured in the collection of chapters published in this first Handbook of Psychology and Law. In describing what we have learned ab out psychology and law, the works included here also reveal the questions we have yet to answer and thus offer a blueprint for activities in the next 20 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this refreshing, revelatory commentary on II Samuel chapter three, Overseer Clark takes a parabolic look at the attributes of a king and the leaders that surround him. He examines David’s process and helps us to understand and appreciate Gods purpose and process for our lives. David ‘s life was filled with highs and lows, and much of his destiny was intertwined with other men. Some of witch had ulterior motives and hidden agendas. But the promise of Gods blessing and favor was always evident. In II Samuel chapter three we see that even with destiny on our side, we can be delayed, denied and even destroyed if we are not wise. Every promise of God is contingent, upon obedience, wisdom, time, season, and a number of other contributing factors. Overseer Clark insightfully looks at this season in David’s life extracting powerful truths and lessons that can help every leader no matter what level you may be currently on.

Download or read book Warning Design written by John Edworthy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-03-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why don't we always obey warnings? In discussing a wide range of issues in behavioural research of warnings, this book takes the view that a warning is but one piece of information which we take into account in deciding what - or what not - to do. This view leads the authors to the positions that warnings should be matched in their urgency to the urgency of the situation they warn about. Auditory, visual, written and symbolic warnings are discussed in detail.
