Widening and refining the lens through which the composer is viewed, the essays in Mozart Studies 2 focus on themes, issues, works and repertories perennially popular among Mozart scholars of all kinds, pointing to areas primed for future study and also suitable for investigation by musicians outside the scholarly community. Following on from the first Mozart Studies volume, internationally renowned contributors bring new perspectives to bear on many of Mozart's most popular works, as well as the composer's letters, biography, and reception. Chapters are grouped according to topics covered and collectively affirm the vitality of Mozart scholarship and the significant role it continues to play in defining and redefining musicological priorities in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Southern Music). These two extraordinary works of late Mozart, KV 594 and KV 608, were both composed to fulfill a commission for a memorial exhibit in Vienna, to be played in a "mechanical clock organ." The term "fantasy" or "fantasia" came to be affixed to these works later, and is more descriptive and less cumbersome than the term Mozart listed in his own catalogue, "Ein Stuke fur ein Orgelwerk in ein Uhr." They are also variously titled "Adagio und Allegro in f fur ein Orgelwerk" and "Allegro und Andante (Fantasie in f) fur eine Orgelwaltze." The first of these, composed between the monumental String Quintet in D and the Piano Concerto in Bb KV 595, is an A-B-A form, comprised of an f minor Adagio opening and closing, with a contrapuntal Allegro at its heart. KV 608 is more complicated, opening with an f minor section reminiscent of a French Overture, followed by a fugue in f minor, then an Andante aria, followed by a return to the opening and then a more complex version of the fugue. Despite the frustration that Mozart expressed (in a letter to Constanze) with the sound world of these mechanical devices, KV 594 and 608 are remarkable works which stand at an intersection, incorporating what he learned about counterpoint studying at the foot of Bach, while looking ahead to the emotional and harmonic poignancy of Schubert.
Book Synopsis Bach Perspectives by : Michael Marissen
Download or read book Bach Perspectives written by Michael Marissen and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines a fascinating dimension of J. S. Bach’s music: the crucial influence it has exerted upon the musical works of many other composers. In a series of articles by distinguished musicologists, compositions by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Hindemith, and others are considered in light of the ways in which they bear Bach’s unmistakable imprint. Ludwig Finscher opens with a survey of Bach’s influence through several centuries, examining his sway over composers from Mozart and Beethoven to Schumann, Wagner, and Reger. Thomas Christensen shows that various of Bach’s early disciples claimed authority from their master for opposing assessments of music and musical theory. Robert L. Marshall argues that Mozart’s intense involvement with Bach’s music probably occurred much earlier in his career than has generally been thought. William Kinderman demonstrates that Beethoven’s assimilation of Bach also occurred very early in his career and that all aspects of Beethoven’s mature style are heavily indebted to Bach. Walter Frisch reveals how Brahms’s absorption in Bach’s work involves a fruitful relation to cultural tradition. Steven Hinton traces Hindemith’s evolving—yet essentially consistent—understanding of Bach’s music. A work that subtly yet decisively traces Bach’s presence in the ongoing history of composition, this volume is an important contribution to our understanding of Bach and of his many eminent successors.

Book Synopsis J. S. Bach at His Royal Instrument by : Russell Stinson
Download or read book J. S. Bach at His Royal Instrument written by Russell Stinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging set of original essays, musicologist and organist Russell Stinson investigates Johann Sebastian Bach's compositions for the organ, opening up a wealth of perspectives on the stylistic orientation and historical context of these timeless masterpieces. With a sweeping hand, Stinson sheds light on the entire corpus of Bach's organ chorales, and considers the reception of particular pieces not only by various luminaries in the classical music world, but also those within such disparate contexts as film, literature, politics, and rock music. Stinson's investigations include a revealing focus on a previously unpublished fugue by Bach pupil J. G. Schübler, unexplored techniques found in over twenty of Bach's chorale preludes, and the diverse ways in which Bach's organ works have been received from the composer's own lifetime to the present day. Individual essays are also devoted to Felix Mendelssohn as a performer; to Robert Schumann as an editor and critic; to César Franck as a performer, pedagogue, and composer; and to Edward Elgar as a performer, critic, and transcriber. Rich in archival data and filled with fascinating anecdotes, J. S. Bach at His Royal Instrument is entirely up-to-date, meticulously annotated and indexed, and eminently readable. This book is essential reading for anyone at all interested in Bach and "the king of instruments."

Book Synopsis Mozart's Piano Music by : William Kinderman
Download or read book Mozart's Piano Music written by William Kinderman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mozart's emergence as a mature artist coincides with the rise to prominence of the piano, an instrument that came alive under his fingers and served as medium for many of his finest compositions. In Mozart's Piano Music, William Kinderman reconsiders common assumptions about Mozart's life and art while offering comprehensive and incisive commentary on the solo music and concertos. After placing Mozart's pianistic legacy in its larger biographical and cultural context, Kinderman addresses the lively gestural and structural aspects of Mozart's musical language and explores the nature of his creative process. Incorporating the most recent research throughout this encompassing study, Kinderman expertly surveys each of the major genres of the keyboard music, including the four-hand and two-piano works. Beyond examining issues such as Mozart's earliest childhood compositions, his musical rhetoric and expression, the social context of his Viennese concertos, and affinities between his piano works and operas, Kinderman's main emphasis falls on detailed discussion of selected individual compositions.
