Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weird Tales launched in March of 1923 and the world was never the same again. While Pulp magazines had been around for some time Weird Tales was the first pulp magazine to specialize in super natural fiction. Weird Tales single handedly created the field of genre fiction as we know it. No longer did readers of Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror have to seek out single stories in otherwise mundane magazines now they had a magazine all of their own that published only the stories that they wanted to read. Collected in this anthology are over two hundred thousand words of some of the greatest stories ever published in the pages of Weird Tales. Included are: Red Nails by Robert E. Howard The Tree of Life by C. L. Moore Birthmark by Seabury Quinn Spider Mansion by Fritz Leiber Evolution Island by Edmond Hamilton The Monkey Spoons by Mary Elizabeth Counselman The Diamond Lens by Fitz-James O'Brien The Dunwich Horror by H. P. Lovecraft The Salem Horror by Henry Kuttner The Haunted Burglar by W. C. Morrow The Lost Gods by Dorothy Quick The Terror Of The Water-Tank by William Hope Hodgson The White Feather Hex by Don Peterson The Death of Ilalotha by Clark Ashton Smith Each Man Kills by Victoria Glad The Disc Recorder by August Derleth The Doors of Death by Arthur B. Waltermire Where Are You Mr. Biggs? by Nelson S. Bond The Invaders by Benjamin Ferris The Three Pools and the Painted Moon by Frank Owen Werewolf of the Sahara by G.G. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for students as well as scholars of religion and violence, Belief and Bloodshed discusses how the relationship between religion and violence is not unique to a post-9/11 world_it has existed throughout all of recorded history and culture. The book makes clear the complex interactions between religion, violence, and politics to show that religion as always innocent or always evil is misguided, and that rationalizations by religion for political power and violence are not new. Chronologically organized, the book shows religiously motivated violence across a variety of historical periods and cultures, moving from the ancient to medieval to the modern world, ending with an essay comparing the speeches of an ancient king to the speeches of the current U.S. President.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1977, Portraits of White Racism advanced a distinctively sociological theory of racism. Based on five case histories, it critically assessed the prevailing social-psychological paradigm that equated racism with prejudice and provided an alternative interpretation. Racism, the book argued, could be understood as a culturally sanctioned strategy for defending social advantage based on race; it was not simply the product of psychological abnormalities. In this revised edition the theoretical perspective is updated, taking into account recent theorising in the sociology of racism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American labour history is typically interpreted by scholars as a history of defeat. Hidden by this conventional wisdom are a handful of militant unions that did not follow the putative Congress of Industrial Organizations trajectory. Based on three years of ethnographic research, this book examines a union that organised itself to systematically challenge management's rule on the shopfloor: San Francisco's longshore union. American unionism looks quite different than conventional wisdom suggests when everyday union practices are observed. American labour's trajectory, this book argues, is neither inevitable nor determined; militant, democratic forms of unionism are possible in the United States; and collective bargaining does not automatically eliminate contests for workplace control. The contract is a bargain that reflects and reproduces fundamental disagreement; it states how production and conflict will proceed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert E. Howard is famous for creating such immortal heroes as Conan the Cimmerian, Solomon Kane, and Bran Mak Morn. Less well-known but equally extraordinary are his non-fantasy adventure stories set in the Middle East and featuring such two-fisted heroes as Francis Xavier Gordon—known as “El Borak”—Kirby O’Donnell, and Steve Clarney. This trio of hard-fighting Americans, civilized men with more than a touch of the primordial in their veins, marked a new direction for Howard’s writing, and new territory for his genius to conquer. The wily Texan El Borak, a hardened fighter who stalks the sandscapes of Afghanistan like a vengeful wolf, is rivaled among Howard’s creations only by Conan himself. In such classic tales as “The Daughter of Erlik Khan,” “Three-Bladed Doom,” and “Sons of the Hawk,” Howard proves himself once again a master of action, and with plenty of eerie atmosphere his plotting becomes tighter and twistier than ever, resulting in stories worthy of comparison to Jack London and Rudyard Kipling. Every fan of Robert E. Howard and aficionados of great adventure writing will want to own this collection of the best of Howard’s desert tales, lavishly illustrated by award-winning artists Tim Bradstreet and Jim & Ruth Keegan.

Book excerpt: In John the Balladeer, Manly Wade Wellman created one of the great characters in all of horror and fantasy literature. Armed with his silver-stringed guitar and an endless trove of folk songs, John travels the backwoods of Appalachia, battling supernatural evil with his own brand of down-home charm and endless resourcefulness. In these tales, John wanders the Southern mountains, encountering hoodoo men and witch women, strange supernatural beasts, malevolent spirits, and even George Washington's ghost. Edited by horror legend Karl Edward Wagner, this volume contains the complete John the Balladeer stories in their original, unaltered form, as they first appeared in magazines and anthologies between 1951 and 1987. Also featured are a foreword by Wellman's friend and literary executor David Drake and an introduction by Wagner. "Just as J. R. R. Tolkien brilliantly created a modern British myth cycle, so did Manly Wade Wellman give to us an imaginary world of purely American fact, fantasy and song." - Karl Edward Wagner "This is the real thing-a book of haunting fantasies with their roots going down deep into the American folk tradition." - Robert Silverberg Cover by Ilan Sheady

Book excerpt: Before Spider-Man and Dr. Strange, the legendary comic book artist Steve Ditko was conjuring all manners of horrors at his drawing table. In his first two years in the industry (1953 and 1954), Ditko drew tales of macabre suspense that were not yet hobbled by the imminent Comics Code Authority (adopted in October 1954). These stories featured graphic bloodshed, dismemberment and blood-curdling acid baths as the ugly end to the lives of the dark and twisted inhabitants of Steve Ditko’s imagination. Strange Suspense features spectacular full-color reprints of every story from those first two years of his career.
