Book Synopsis Lithuanian Jewish Communities by : Nancy Schoenburg
Download or read book Lithuanian Jewish Communities written by Nancy Schoenburg and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1996 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume lists, in alphabetical order, the major Jewish communities that existed in Lithuania before World War II. The name of each community is accompanied by information about it: when it was founded, the Jewish population in different years, shops and synagogues, and the names of citizens. An appendix locates each town on a map of Lithuania. Since most of the Jewish communities in Lithuania were destroyed in the Holocaust, this volume will be a valuable tool in recreating a picture of Lithuanian Jewry.

Book excerpt: From the film director behind his creation, Four gives readers an exclusive look at the adventures of Antoine Doinel through the screenplays and stills of the four films he appears in. Thought by many to be the fictional alter ego of Francois Truffaut, Antoine Doinel, played in all movies by Jean-Pierre Leaud, was a fictional character created by Truffaut that depicted many of his own memories ranging from childhood through divorce. Four is an enchanting look at the character of Antoine through screenplays and stills from four of Truffaut’s most well-known films: The 400 Blows, Love at Twenty, Stolen Kisses, and Bed and Board.
Book Synopsis Felix Adler and Ethical Culture by : Horace L. Friess
Download or read book Felix Adler and Ethical Culture written by Horace L. Friess and published by . This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social and ethical questions become ever more urgent while the creedal religions speak in increasingly diverse voices. The Ethical Culture movement, founded in 1876, was early in recognizing that this would occur, and its creation made available a membership society organized for people who felt it important to adopt a moral and spiritual identification that necessitated commitment to ethical knowledge and practice. This book speaks for itself. It describes the Ethical Movement as viewed by a member of its Board of Leaders who also served as Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University. The fact that the author was a son-in-law of Dr. Felix Adler gave him a privileged position from which to prepare this personal, yet scholarly, study. While this book is not an official publication of the Ethical Culture movement, it throws light upon its origin and development and should be of special interest to those who may find in Ethical Culture an answer to their moral and spiritual quest. -Sidney H. Scheuer

Figured prominently are many great Torah scholars, as well as simple Jews (including children) whose spiritual resistance to the Nazis included devotion to religious practice to the point of martyrdom. Oshry, a rabbi, survived until liberation in a hidden bunker for 38 days. Pt. 2 (pp. 178-291), "The Annihilation of Lithuanian Jewry: The Cities and Towns of Jewish Lithuania", provides short histories of 47 communities, with a focus on their outstanding religious personalities and institutions, and an account of the destruction of each of these communities and almost all of their inhabitants during the Holocaust.
