Book excerpt: In a series of personal essays, the organic farmer and author of Epitaph for a Peach prepares to hand his family’s eighty-acre farm to his daughter. How do you become a farmer? The real questions are: What kind of person do you want to be? Are you willing to change? How do you learn? What is your vision for the future? In this poignant collection of essays, David Mas Masumoto prepares for one of life’s greatest transitions. After four decades of working the land, he will pass down his beloved peach farm to his daughter, Nikiko. Echoing Nikiko’s words that “all of the gifts I have received from this life are not only worthy of sharing, but must be shared,” Mas reflects on topics as far ranging as the art of pruning, climate change, and the prejudice his family faced during and after World War II: essays that, whether humorous or heartbreaking, explore what it means to pass something on. Nikiko’s voice is present too, as she relates the myriad lessons she has learned from her father in preparation for running the farm as a queer mixed-race woman. Both farmers feel less than totally set for the future that lies ahead; indeed, Changing Season addresses the uncertain future of small-scale agriculture in California. What is unquestionable, though, is the family’s love for their vocation—and for each other.

But even on good days, you can feel tired. Despite our best efforts, we’re sometimes faced with grouchy, bored, or strong-willed children. Ever make dinner after a long day only to be met with grimaces and grumbling? Ever faced stubborn resistance over clothes? And why is it so hard to get out the door in a timely manner? As Chapman and Mickelborough faced the reality of their beautiful little humans expressing their sometimes-difficult selves, it occurred to them—maybe we're not loving them in the way they need! This book is borne out of their own experiences and desires to love their children well. What does it look like to love my child through Acts of Service? How can I think of a new way to have Quality Time with my child? This book is an invaluable resource of family activities incorporating each of the five love languages. There are ideas for wet days, sunny days, and holidays . . . ways to relax or to be active . . . ways to be creative or take in new experiences together. Family Time brings ease and enjoyment to your days and helps activate all five love languages in your household.

Book excerpt: Our Love Is from Clever Publishing is the perfect way to celebrate the love between parent and child. This sweet rhyme explores the love of family members throughout the year as they engage in activities together during winter, spring, summer, and fall. Children will learn about the four seasons and the various activities that can be enjoyed in each. Young readers will also explore poetry through rhyme and meter as they listen to the verses being read, or read the story themselves. In winter, families spend time playing in the snow, enjoying holiday lights, sledding down hills, and warming up by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate after time outside. Spring brings new flowers and days of flyingkites and looking for shapes in the clouds. In summer, families take walks to the park to watch the animals in the pond, and children play hide-and-seek, swim with friends, and enjoy ice-cream cones to stay cool. Families gaze at the fireflies when it's dark. And the season of fall brings with it cooler weather spent wandering in corn mazes, jumping in leaves, enjoying homemade stew, and decorating the house with pumpkins. And through every season and change that the year brings, the love of family remains as strong as ever!

Book excerpt: By the author of the bestselling picture book Petunia, The House of Four Seasons is a bright and lively family picture book about colors, imagination, and compromise When Father, Mother, Billy, and Suzy go house hunting in the country, they fall in love with a grand old house nestled among tall weeds and trees. It is in need of repair, and soon a carpenter, mason, and tinsmith come to set things straight, but it needs painting too. The family agrees it would be more fun to paint the house themselves, but no one can agree on the color, and to make matters worse, the hardware store only carries three colors: red, blue, and yellow. But Father has an idea. “You’ll see, he says, “colors can do many tricks when they get together,” and with a sudden flourish, a color wheel appears! Budding artists and engineers will love this surprising story, and adults would do well to note how Father arrives at a winning trifecta of negotiation, education, and thrift.

Book excerpt: Moving with the Seasons: Portrait of a Mongolian Family, is a visual and written portrait of life in a nomadic Mongolian family. Filled with photographs and personal perspectives on daily life, this book is an outgrowth of my relationship with the family who became my collaborators in writing this book. The family?s willingness to share with the rest of the world the annual cycle of nomadic life on the Mongolian steppe makes for an unusually intimate portrait of a modern nomadic people. Much of the information found in my text and photographs comes directly from time spent with this family, and is not available in print elsewhere. My goal was to capture the life and spirit of the Mongolian nomads and to present their lives with honor and integrity. Everything from the household logistics of living in a tent, to the excitement of horse racing, to the family?s thoughts on religion, politics and death are described in the book. Presented within the context of the often surprising blend of traditional and modern elements of nomadic life, the text and photos document the centrality of animals to the herding community, their enduring traditions of hospitality and yearly celebrations, and the changing patterns of religious practice and academic schooling. The family, while retaining the essential ancient ways of living that have survived since the time of Genghis Kahn in 1200 AD, are already incorporating aspects of the modern world. Moving with the Seasons documents a traditional culture that still survives in a modern world even as it is under tremendous pressure to change from global forces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1970, The Unfolding of The Seasons provides an interpretation and evaluation of James Thomson’s poem The Seasons. Professor Cohen urges its reconsideration as a major Augustan poem, arguing that Thomson’s unity, diction and thought combine with a conception of man, nature and God which is poetically tenable and distinctive. The case for The Seasons as an important work of art depends upon its effectiveness as a moving vision of human experience, and Professor Cohen believes that many critics have not felt this effectiveness because they have misconceived Thomson’s vision and misunderstood his idiom. His study aims to persuade them to return to the poem and to examine it within the context of an Augustan tradition. Professor Cohen shows that Thomson’s great achievement is to have fashioned a conception which, by bringing nature to the forefront of his poem, became a new poetic way of defining human experience. Thomson was not the first nature poet in English, but he was the first to provide an effective idiom in which science, orthodox religion, natural description, and classical allusions blended to describe the glory, baseness and uncertainty of man’s earthly environment, holding forth the hope of heavenly love and wisdom. This study shows that Thomson found a personal idiom by means of which he created an artistic vision. It will appeal to those with an interest in English literature and in philosophy.

Book excerpt: Planting and leading churches is a difficult calling. It can put strain on your mental and physical health, on your relationships with others, and even your relationship with God. Sifted offers practical guidance and hope for anyone going through a tough time in ministry or pastoral work. Founding pastor of New Hope Christian Fellowship in Honolulu, Hawaii Wayne Cordeiro speaks the truth in love, offering wisdom and insight to walk alongside leaders as they face the challenges and hardships of planting and leading churches, while providing encouragement and inspiration for the journey. A seasoned church leader, Wayne shares the things he wishes he'd known when he was starting a new church. With additional stories from Francis Chan and Larry Osborne, each chapter includes a thought-provoking challenge question to develop a heart that is surrendered to God, focused on "being and becoming" versus "doing and accomplishing." Wayne will walk you through how to develop a healthy balance of personal care and spiritual leadership. But instead of a "how to" book on models and methods from men who have it all figured out, Sifted will help you process your journey in a way that: Challenges leaders' common scorecards of success. Encourages leaders to realize that they are not alone in what they are experiencing. Provides wisdom for the long haul to position younger leaders for a life of ministry. You many find yourself in a season of sifting. If you respond correctly, this season can be every bit as important as the time of harvest. Sifting builds the muscle of faith, giving us what we need for what lies just around the corner.
