Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of Millennium Development Goals is dependent to a large extent on the success in addressing the population issues. Family planning has been a part of the general development policy of Nepal since the mid-1960s. The knowledge about contraception is almost universal but there is still a high unmet need among married women. Despite high demand to space or limit the birth, long acting methods account for less than three percent of the method mix. With the current pace of contraceptive prevalence rate the Millennium Development Goals seem hard to reach. Choice of a family planning method is determined by a wide range of factors. A clear understanding of these factors should increase access to family planning methods by providing informed choice. This book therefore is designed with a view to availing information to program implementers, managers and health workers about the factors that influence utilization of different family planning spacing methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on almost a decade of research in the Kathmandu Valley, Planning Families in Nepal offers a compelling account of Hindu Nepali women as they face conflicting global and local ideals regarding family planning. Promoting a two-child norm, global family planning programs have disseminated the slogan, “A small family is a happy family,” throughout the global South. Jan Brunson examines how two generations of Hindu Nepali women negotiate this global message of a two-child family and a more local need to produce a son. Brunson explains that while women did not prefer sons to daughters, they recognized that in the dominant patrilocal family system, their daughters would eventually marry and be lost to other households. As a result, despite recent increases in educational and career opportunities for daughters, mothers still hoped for a son who would bring a daughter-in-law into the family and care for his aging parents. Mothers worried about whether their modern, rebellious sons would fulfill their filial duties, but ultimately those sons demonstrated an enduring commitment to living with their aging parents. In the context of rapid social change related to national politics as well as globalization—a constant influx of new music, clothes, gadgets, and even governments—the sons viewed the multigenerational family as a refuge. Throughout Planning Families in Nepal, Brunson raises important questions about the notion of “planning” when applied to family formation, arguing that reproduction is better understood as a set of local and global ideals that involve actors with desires and actions with constraints, wrought with delays, stalling, and improvisation.

Book excerpt: This study takes a multilevel approach to identify determinants of women's use of modern contraceptives in Nepal and Rwanda. Data for this study come primarily from the 2011 NDHS and the 2010 RDHS, and also draw from spatial data sources to measure community levels of socioeconomic development. The study focuses on rural women who do not wish to have a child within the next two years, a subset of women of particular interest to family planning policymakers. We explore the extent to which four spheres of community-level influence -- socioeconomic development, women's empowerment, fertility norms, and access to family planning information and services -- shape women's contraceptive use, after adjusting for women's individual socio-demographic characteristics and for other contextual factors. A sequence of random-effects logit regression models are run -- separately for Rwanda and Nepal. Overall, results from this study indicate the relevance for family planning programs of the community context in which women live. The demand for family planning services is influenced not only by women's individual and household characteristics, but also by the community's socioeconomic development, its access and exposure to family planning, the gender norms of local community members regarding decision-making for family planning and health issues, and community norms regarding marriage and childbirth. Among the factors we explored, the analysis suggests that socioeconomic development and access to family planning services may play a bigger role in affecting women's contraceptive behaviors than the community's norms regarding gender and fertility. --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unmet need of family planning can be explained as the gap between individual contraceptives behavior and individual fertility preference. This study aimed to investigate the determinants of unmet need of family planning, and explore the associations of unmet need with predisposing, reinforcing and enabling factors, however this researcher has attempted to identify the various situations regarding unmet need in the context of the study, which can be representative of the rural setting of any developing country in Asia. This cross sectional study was carried out in Syanja a rural district, of western Nepal, the population consisted of 295 Married Women of Reproductive Age (MWRA) aged from 15 to 49 years. A clustered random sampling technique was used to select the sample group. Descriptive statistics along with chi-square test was applied to compute the association between variables. A set of structured questionnaires were designed to collect the data. The data were collected from Jan. 19th to Feb. 14th, 2014 in eight village development committees of Syanja district in Nepal. The result of this study mostly focused on the unmet need which was analyzed through two different methods, on the basis of the WHO definition of unmet need and on the basis of contextual approach. According to the WHO definition, 11 percent of unmet need was identified whereas unmet need on the basis of contextual study was 54 percent. Eventhough the status of current users were good (61.2 percent) the unmet need was still high. Mostly, this is because of the improper choice of family planning methods. About 80% of respondents had a history of early marriage (before 20 years). Mean age of marriage was 19 ซ2.4 years. Significant association was seen between age group, education and number of living children (
