Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From original manuscripts and letters to sound recordings and birth certificates, archival information plays an increasingly important role in modern research. Libraries and the Internet have made finding information on a wide range of topics faster and easier, but not all information—particularly from primary sources—is available via local library branches or online resources. Using archival information presents its own challenges. Materials are often located in many different places: public or academic libraries, government agencies, historical societies, or museums. They are usually kept in secured areas where the public is restricted from browsing. This definitive guide shows novice and experienced researchers how to find archival information. It provides tips on how to use archival materials effectively and efficiently. Topics covered include government archives, science and technology collections, military archives, genealogical records, business and corporate archives, performing arts archives, and sports collections. Also provided is an overview of the world of archives, including archival terminology, how to contact archives, and archival etiquette. Whether searching for a noted author's original manuscripts, trying to locate presidential papers, or tracking down a repository of oral histories, Archival Information is an indispensable reference.

Book excerpt: This is a genealogical history of the McKneely families of South Carolina, Georgia and Louisiana. There are two branches to this Scotch-Irish family with this unique spelling. One that migrated from South Carolina to Georgia and then on to Texas and other parts of the expanding United States of America. Then there is the branch that left South Carolina in the late 1700s and early 1800s with other families and settled in what at the time was West Florida. This area then was taken into the United States of America with the purchase of Florida from Spain and then became a part of Louisiana. The Louisiana branch resided in the Parishes called the Florida Parishes and stayed close to the area until after the First World War when the family began to migrate into other parts of the United States. You will find in this book two parts. One part covers the McKneely family that migrated to the Florida Parishes of Louisiana and the Second part that covers the McKneely family that first migrated to Georgia and then to Oklahoma and Texas. There is speculation but no proof that the two lines come from the common immigrant ancestor James McNealy with various spellings of McNealy. Look at the information and decide for yourself whether or not two lines could adopt a common spelling change, come from South Carolina and have common names and not be related to the common ancestor attached to the Louisiana McKneely clan. I have attempted to include as much detail as possible about each person. Personal stories are the spice of a genealogical work. I have included as many as possible and included them without edit. I am not a politically correct family historian. There may be some factually correct material that you may not like or that someone might tell you is not correct. Please read this account with the times and culture in mind as that is what makes the story a good one. Do not try to impress yourself on the story but put yourself into the times and places.

Book excerpt: "Indefatigable Torie may irk her men, but her exploits do keep you amused." - Kirkus Reviews Torie O'Shea has her hands full. Aside from her new duties as president of the Historical Society in New Kassel, Missouri, and her interest in genealogy, she's having a new house built, coordinating the town's Oktoberfest, and coping with her teenage daughter, who's beginning to date. Then at the request of a local journalist, Torie takes on an assignment to research the families of her hometown's two mayoral candidates: incumbent Bill Castlereagh and his challenger, Sheriff Colin Brooke, who happens to be Torie's step-father. Before she can get anywhere on the politicians' genealogies, though, a body turns up and spoils the Oktoberfest parade. Sheriff Brooke discovers some disturbing information about the dead man. Meanwhile, Torie's research into Castlereagh's genealogy is turning up more questions than answers. As the case unravels, the mayor flees town and Torie is left with a shocking discovery that might lead to her own demise. Once again, Rett MacPherson's charming characters and twisting plot keep the town of New Kassel—and the reader—on edge, making Dead Man Running a delightful addition to the Torie O'Shea series.
