Book excerpt: While disparities in educational attainment between racial groups are a persistent and well-documented feature of American society, questions remain as to how race structures differences in the educational career trajectories of students. For instance, recent sociological studies have found that controlling for family background minority students are more likely to attend college than white students are. Yet it is not known whether this pattern is specific to college enrollment or if this pattern is a feature of earlier educational experiences as well. Additionally, many sociological studies have focused on differences in aspirational orientations and school characteristics as important aspects in the etiology of racial disparities in educational outcomes. However, it is not known how the impact of these factors changes over the course of student careers, or how changes in the impact of these variables contribute to racial disparities in educational outcomes. To address these issues, I analyze how racial disparities in educational attainment are produced using an empirical model of educational careers. Findings indicate that racial differences in educational careers begin in early grades and take a different form at different points in student educational careers. For instance, while aspirational variables do not change the pattern of racial differences in early grades, these variables become increasing important as students progress in their educational careers. These and other findings indicate that current sociological understandings of racial inequalities in education need re-specified to better understand contemporary racial disparities in educational outcomes.

Steady Gains and Stalled Progress shows that while income inequality does not directly lead to racial differences in test scores, it creates and exacerbates disparities in schools, families, and communities—which do affect test scores. Jens Ludwig and Jacob Vigdor demonstrate that the period of greatest progress in closing the gap coincided with the historic push for school desegregation in the 1960s and 1970s. Stagnation came after efforts to integrate schools slowed down. Today, the test score gap is nearly 50 percent larger in states with the highest levels of school segregation. Book excerpt: The sizable gender gap in college enrolment, especially among African Americans, constitutes a puzzling empirical regularity that may have serious consequences on marriage markets, male labor force participation and the diversity of college campuses. For instance, only 35.7 percent of all African American undergraduate students were men in 2004. Reduced form results show that, while family background covariates cannot account for the observed gap, proxy measures for non-cognitive skills are crucial to explain it. Moreover, a sequential model of educational attainment indicates that males have actually higher preferences for education than females after controlling for latent factors (i.e. cognitive and non-cognitive skills). The model also shows that cognitive skills strongly affect the decision to move from one school level to the next, especially after finishing high school, but cannot account for disparities between genders. On the contrary, the substantial differences in the distribution of non-cognitive skills between males and females make these abilities critical to explain the gender gap in educational attainment across and within races. Appendices present 12 tables and 1 figure.
