Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Genealogical Sketch of a Branch of the Wait or Waite Family of America Other matters of a more pressing importance presented themselves, and this work slumbered (though the thought was not abandoned) until two years ago, when, having considerable leisure during the winter season, I overhauled what I had and set myself at work anew in the case. Since that time many of my spare moments have been devoted to the collecting of material. I have gleaned some what from the records of Old England and especially of Northern Wales, the land from whence my foreparents emigrated; New Eng land, particularly Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont, have added their store; Canada West. The Empire State and many of her sister States, where the name or its kindred is known or have lived, have been pretty thoroughly worked over; old burial grounds and family records without stint have been consulted; the patience of officials and relatives has been tried, and, in fact, every stone has been turned where I thought an item could be obtained, and from the large mass of material (enough to make a respectable volume insize) I have assorted and arranged what is here presented, which seems very small compared with the labor it has taken to obtain it. It was my first thought to' write more extensively; to take in a wider range than to the third degree of relationship, and to jot down some of the more important facts in their life-history, and for awhile I collected items for that purpose; but on re ection the few who will be interested in the work and the very small number of copies that can ever be disposed of must and will limit the expense accordingly. Something had been done by general gleaners in the field before me, but it has been a much greater task than was at first expected, and it is with considerable regret that I have been wholly unable to obtain some data to me very important. It is indeed pleasing to know that I have received from those who have kindly lent their aid in this work almost universal kindness and respect, for which I hereby tender my heartfelt thanks.
