Book excerpt: Breaking Free is a practical guide to facilitating self-directing educational processes into participatory action research (PAR) enabling average people to contribute what they can as active participants in research projects. As such, it is designed primarily for these participants rather than the academic researcher in order to introduce participants to authentic contributions they can make as activists in knowledge-making processes. At the same time, Breaking Free guides academic researchers towards helpful practices enriching their often times lonely and isolated existence created by a false sense of "objectivity." A hands-on practical yet disciplined approach to facilitating PAR prepares readers to craft their own individual Guide as they prepare for the PAR life. This opens up the world of knowledge-making to people long silenced by forces intent on controlling knowledge for the educated elite. Breaking Free invites people to contribute as they can and be recognized for this contribution.

Book excerpt: How to build bounce-back kids, families, schools, and communities is the theme of Resiliency In Action: Practical Ideas for Overcoming Risks and Building Strengths in Youth, Families, and Communities. It is edited by internationally recognized resiliency expert, trainer, and consultant Nan Henderson, M.S.W., whose publications are used in more than 25 countries. The book is a research-based, practical guide for educators, counselors, parents, community organizers, and mentors and is filled with the latest strategies for helping children, families, schools, and communities bounce back from risk, stress, trauma, and adversity.More than two dozen experts in the fields of child, family, organizational, and community resiliency contributed to the book, which challenges a widely accepted myth about people especially young people, who experience risks, stress, trauma, and adversity in their lives, according to Henderson. Contrary to popular opinion, the majority of these individuals, over time, do bounce back and do well. There is a growing body of scientific research from several fields that documents this fact and yields important information as to what can be done every day to facilitate this process of overcoming. This book is really three books in one: it contains the most recent research, hands-on and practical strategies, and stories of resilient individuals and best practices. The book includes 60 chapters grouped in seven sections: The Foundations of Resiliency, Resiliency and Schools, Resiliency and Communities, Resiliency Connections (Mentoring, Support, and Counseling), Resiliency and Youth Development, Resiliency and Families, and Resiliency and the Brain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opening the Black Box: Contextual Drivers of Social Accountability fills an important knowledge gap by providing guidance on how to assess contextual drivers of social accountability effectiveness. This publication aims to more strategically support citizen engagement at the country level and for a specific issue or problem. The report proposes a novel framing of social accountability as the interplay of constitutive elements: citizen action and state action, supported by three enabling levers: civic mobilization, interface and information. For each of these constitutive elements, the report identifies 'drivers' of contextual effectiveness which take into account a broad range of contextual factors (e.g., social, political and intervention-based, including information and communication technologies). Opening the Black Box offers detailed guidance on how to assess each driver. It also applies the framework at two levels. At the country level, the report looks at 'archetypes' of challenging country contexts, such as regimes with no formal space or full support for citizen-state engagement and fragile and conflict-affected situations. The report also illustrates the use of the framework to analyze specific social accountability interventions through four case studies: Sierra Leone, Pakistan, Yemen, and the Kyrgyz Republic.

Book excerpt: This PRINT REPLICA contains the 6th edition of the Test & Evaluation Management Guide (TEMG). The Test & Evaluation Management Guide is intended primarily for use in courses at DAU and secondarily as a generic desk reference for program and project management, and Test & Evaluation (T&E) personnel. It is written for current and potential acquisition management personnel and assumes some familiarity with basic terms, definitions, and processes as employed by the DoD acquisition process. The Test & Evaluation Management Guide is designed to assist Government and industry personnel in executing their management responsibilities relative to the T&E support of defense systems and facilitate learning during Defense Acquisition University coursework. The objective of a well-managed T&E program is to provide timely and accurate information to decision makers and program managers (PMs). The Test & Evaluation Management Guide was developed to assist the acquisition community in obtaining a better understanding of who the decision makers are and determining how and when to plan T&E events so that they are efficient and effective. Book excerpt: From the Japanese word meaning ''to create value,'' this book presents a fresh perspective on the question of the ultimate purpose of education. Mixing American pragmatism and the Buddhist philosophy of respect for all life, the goal of Soka education is the lifelong happiness of the learner. Rather than offering practical classroom techniques, this book speaks to the emotional heart of both the teacher and the student. With input from philosophers and activists from several cultures, it advances the conviction that the true purpose of education is to create a peaceful world and to develop the individual character of each student in order to achieve that goal. This revised edition contains four new chapters that further elaborate on how to unlock self-motivated learning and how to empower the learner to make a difference in their communities and the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Intimate partner violence and sexual violence are significant global health problems and human rights issues. Under the rubric of violence against women the two overlapping issues have received increasing attention. Much of the response to these forms of violence has focussed either on advocacy, providing adequate health and legal services and ensuring safety of victims once violence is disclosed, or on screening for violence in the context of health services. When the word "prevention" is used, it is usually in reference to secondary and tertiary prevention - helping women get out of violent situations and preventing further violence. Little attention has been given to primary prevention - addressing the root causes with the goal of reducing the number of new cases. Recent hallmark publications have called for increased investment in primary prevention. As part of the Global Campaign for Violence Prevention, WHO is giving increased attention to the primary prevention of intimate partner violence and sexual violence. Preventing intimate partner and sexual violence against women: taking action and generating evidence is an important new tool for violence prevention researchers, practitioners and advocates provides a planning framework for developing policies and programmes for the prevention of intimate partner and sexual violence. This guide outlines the nature, magnitude, risks and consequences of intimate partner and sexual violence. It outlines strategies to prevent these forms of violence against women and describes how these can be tailored to the needs, capacities and resources of particular settings. It also emphasizes the importance of integrating scientific evaluation into all prevention activities in order to expand current knowledge of what works. The manual describes interventions of known effectiveness, those supported by emerging evidence, and those that could potentially be effective, but have yet to be sufficiently evaluated for their impact. For instance, school-based programmes to prevent violence occurring in "dating relationships" have been shown to be effective in randomized trials in the USA and Canada. Evidence is emerging for the effectiveness of empowerment approaches which use microfinance combined with gender-equality training or are based on communications and relationship skills training such as the Stepping Stones training package, which has been widely used in low- and middle-income countries. Strategies that aim to prevent intimate partner and sexual violence through reducing the harmful use of alcohol also show promise. A six-step framework for planning, implementing and evaluating such prevention programmes and policies is presented. This document is primarily aimed at policy-makers, programme planners and donors from public health and related sectors who seek to advance the prevention of intimate partner and sexual violence against women. In addition to the principal audience, other interested parties will include those working in other government sectors such as education, child welfare, social care, criminal justice and departments of women or gender equality; advocates from civil society organizations; local authorities; environmental and urban planners; and researchers."
