Book Synopsis The Brothers of Romulus by : Cynthia J. Bannon
Download or read book The Brothers of Romulus written by Cynthia J. Bannon and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1997-09-29 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories about brothers were central to Romans' public and poetic myth making, to their experience of family life, and to their ideas about intimacy among men. Through the analysis of literary and legal representations of brothers, Cynthia Bannon attempts to re-create the context and contradictions that shaped Roman ideas about brothers. She draws together expressions of brotherly love and rivalry around an idealized notion of fraternity: fraternal pietas--the traditional Roman virtue that combined affection and duty in kinship. Romans believed that the relationship between brothers was especially close since their natural kinship made them nearly alter egos. Because of this special status, the fraternal relationship became a model for Romans of relationships between friends, lovers, and soldiers. The fraternal relationship first took shape at home, where inheritance laws and practices fostered cooperation among brothers in managing family property and caring for relatives. Appeals to fraternal pietas in political rhetoric drew a large audience in the forum, because brothers' devotion symbolized the mos maiorum, the traditional morality that grounded Roman politics and celebrated brothers fighting together on the battlefield. Fraternal pietas and fratricide became powerful metaphors for Romans as they grappled with the experience of recurrent civil war in the late Republic and with the changes brought by empire. Mythological figures like Romulus and Remus epitomized the fraternal symbolism that pervaded Roman society and culture. In The Brothers of Romulus, Bannon combines literary criticism with historical legal analysis for a better understanding of Roman conceptions of brotherhood.

Download or read book Gaius meets Cicero written by Tessa G. Leesen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaius Meets Cicero. Law and Rhetoric in the School Controversies sheds new light on a much debated issue in the field of Roman law, i.e. the so-called 'school controversies' between the Sabinians and the Proculians. Tessa Leesen rejects the general assumption in modern literature that the two schools each adhered to a fundamentally different theoretical conception of law. She argues that the 'school controversies' as described in Gaius' Institutiones arose in legal practice when the heads of the two schools were consulted by two conflicting parties and each gave opposing advice. In order to make their opinions persuasive, the jurists were in need of adequate arguments. For this purpose, they made use of rhetoric and of the argumentative theory of topoi as described in Cicero's Topica.

Download or read book The Commentaries of Gaius and Rules of Ulpian written by Gaius and published by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Latin with a parallel English translation. The Gaii Institutionum Juris Civilis Commentarii Quatuor, or Institutes of Gaius, was compiled around 161 CE. It is a deeply influential elementary textbook on Roman private law. Well-arranged and clearly written, it was the standard textbook for the next 300 years. One of the five authorities accepted by Justinian, it is the primary source of the Institutes. It was also the basis of the Breviarium Alaricianum, or Lex Romana Visigothorum. Gaius [c.115-180] was a teacher and writer who probably lived in Rome. The Tituli ex Corpore Ulpiani, also known as the Epitome Ulpiani, Regulae Ulpiani or Rules of Ulpian is a collection of legal rules attributed to Ulpian [c.160-228 CE], who is considered to be the last great classical Roman jurist. Many of the rules in this collection are similar to those in Gaius, and it is fruitful to have both works in the same volume for the purposes of comparison and clarification.
Book Synopsis Slavery and Other Forms of Strong Asymmetrical Dependencies by : Jeannine Bischoff

This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
