Book Synopsis Household Perspectives on Minority Language Maintenance and Loss by : Isabel Velázquez
Download or read book Household Perspectives on Minority Language Maintenance and Loss written by Isabel Velázquez and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth examination of minority language maintenance and loss within a group of first-generation Spanish-speaking families in the early-21st century, post-industrial, hyper-globalized US Midwest, an area that has a recent history of Latino settlement and has a low ethnolinguistic vitality for Spanish. It looks specifically at language ‘in the small spaces’, that is, everyday interactions within households and families, and gives a detailed account of the gendered nature of linguistic transmission in immigrant households, as well as offering insights into the sociolinguistic aspects of language contact dynamics. Starting with the question of why speakers choose to use and transmit their family language in communities with few opportunities to use it, this book presents the reader with a theoretical model of language maintenance in low vitality settings. It incorporates mothers’ voices and perspectives on mothering, their families’ well-being, and their role in cultural/linguistic transmission and compares the self-perceptions, motivations, attitudes and language acquisition histories of members of two generations within the same household. It will appeal to researchers and educators interested in bilingualism, language maintenance and family language dynamics as well as to those working in the areas of education, immigration and sociology.

Book Synopsis How Children Learn from Parents and Parenting Others in Formal and Informal Settings: International and Cultural Perspectives, 2nd Edition by : Yvette Renee Harris
Download or read book How Children Learn from Parents and Parenting Others in Formal and Informal Settings: International and Cultural Perspectives, 2nd Edition written by Yvette Renee Harris and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several decades, parent-child cognitive interaction researchers have acknowledged that children learn cognitive skills in the context of their social and early environments. These cognitive skills are often imparted to the children by parents or parenting others in formal or informal settings. Thus, for example, such informal settings as dinner table conversations, walks through grocery stores, museums, or neighborhoods become rich laboratories for children to learn varied cognitive skills ranging from numeracy, concepts, and language. The way in which those learning opportunities are provided by parents, structured by parents and scaffolded by parents may well vary depending on culture, and other socio-demographic variables; and may well vary depending on formal or informal settings. The aim of this Research Topic is to bring together scholarship from both global north and global south contexts which explores how children learn via parental involvement in formal and informal settings. Publisher’s note: In this 2nd edition, the following article has been added: Harris YR and Longobardi C (2020) Editorial: How Children Learn From Parents and Parenting Others in Formal and Informal Settings: International and Cultural Perspectives. Book Synopsis Procesos creativos en investigación cualitativa I by : Eugenia Trigo
Download or read book Procesos creativos en investigación cualitativa I written by Eugenia Trigo and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Transitions to School: Perspectives and Experiences from Latin America by : Angel Urbina-García
Download or read book Transitions to School: Perspectives and Experiences from Latin America written by Angel Urbina-García and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book showcases the quality work that Latin American researchers have done on transition to school in Latin American countries by offering the English-speaking world, first-hand access to some Latin American transitions research, practices, and policies. This book shows the work carried out in countries such as Brazil, Chile, Cuba, and Mexico with regards to the way in which the transition to primary school is experienced from different stakeholders' perspectives, and how Latin American educational policies and cultural practices shape such an important process for stakeholders. This book was importantly framed by the COVID-19 pandemic which placed the world in a global health emergency, and it is our hope that this book will trigger future international collaborations between researchers, policy makers, and practitioners interested in transitions which could help produce a wealth of empirical evidence to inform educational policies and transitions practices across the world. Building networks where diverse experiences are valued and respected, as well as analysed, can help provide a platform that supports educators and researchers as they continue their work and branch out in new and challenging directions.
